We are moving towards war with China and you can consider the tariffs the first step. However, in my assessment China's military might is greatly exaggerated.
1. For many years after WW2 Japan would not spend money on military equipment, so that when they finally did begin to their ships were technologically more advanced than any other navy. Japan is for real, whereas China will mass produce garbage to intimidate others by their size. Also the Japanese navy proved their prowess in WW2, not true of China. Also, you learn a lot from your defeats, and I suspect the Japanese are more formidable now than they were in WW2.
2. I rank Taiwan spies in China right up there with Israeli spies in the Mideast. Taiwan has lived since Chiang Kai-shek with the knowledge they must prepare for war with China. This includes how well they have fortified and dug into the tropical island of Taiwan. Their airbase is a very good example. It is dug into a mountain on the east side of the island with the entrance facing the east. There is virtually no way they can be hit from the air and it is virtually impossible for China to take out their air force.
3. If you consider that Taiwan, Japan, Korea and the Philippines are a united block, they have about 300 million in population. Significantly smaller than China, but much greater than the 10:1 ratio that China would need to invade a heavily fortified tropical island.
4. There are several achilles heels to China which I suspect the Taiwan spies will immediately hit in the event of an invasion. For example if you blow up the 3 Gorges dam you flood the industrial heartland of China where 500 million live and wipe out a major power plant. Yes, China is big, but if you are big you offer a whole lot of targets that you can't protect whereas Taiwan is small which limits what they need to defend. We have missiles that would sink landing craft before they could ever get close enough to the island. I think China thought they were slick in that they dug a tunnel under the Taiwan strait from China to Taiwan. However, that tunnel was discovered over a year ago.
