These ten sacred Days of Awe as we approach tomorrow, the most sober and serious day of the year for our Jewish brethren, The Day of Atonement, I have been deeply conscious of this holy season’s significance for us as believers in Yeshua as well.
In Israel we have experienced the reverence of this day, twenty four hours of stillness, the entire ceasing of all activity, in many places not a car on the road or a person on the street, no shopping, no going out to eat, not a sound of laughter or of ordinary daily life. Many people do not leave their home for this twenty-four hour period; one person told me many do not even get out of bed on this day.
In view of this annual “practice run” I have been pondering the tendency we may have as Christians in our security in Christ, to be casual, perhaps even flippant about our own need for such sobriety of self examination in view of this annual exercise for the great day of the Lord, the Day of Appearing Before our Holy God.
As believers in Yeshua, our sins are covered. The pure and perfect Lamb has made atonement. We are washed, cleansed, justified. We have been declared righteous. We have peace with God, peace in God, great joy and comfort in walking with Him.
And yet this week I am pondering the words of Jesus and every one of the epistles calling us to a deeper place.
“Be sober, be vigilant, for your adversary the devil goes about like a lion, seeking whom he may devour.”
Yikes. That sounds a bit serious—like life and death, actually.
“Strait is the gate, and narrow is the way that leads to eternal life, and few there are who find it.”
“Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith.”
“Examine everything carefully, hold fast to that which is good.”
“For you are all sons of light, and sons of the day…so then let us not sleep like others do, but let us be alert and sober.”
“…we were exhorting and encouraging and imploring each one of you so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the God who calls you…”
I could go on and on—our precious new covenant scriptures from which we draw so much joy and confidence as beloved children of the Father are inextricably interwoven with loving warnings and exhortations.
“If —-IF!!!—we walk in the light as He is in the light…the blood of Christ cleanses us from all sins.”
Salvation is IN HIM.
I want to do all i can to be found in Him, day and night, night and day, moment by moment.
Am I awake, alert?
Is my heart tender?
Am I abounding in love?
Is all my armor on and in good condition?
Is there oil in my lamp?
Are there fruit buds on my branches?
Is there anyone to whom I owe anything? An apology? Forgiveness? Encouragement? Love?
Am I full? Full of gratitude, goodness, songs, hymns, spiritual songs that keep my focus above this present chaos?
Our perfection and acceptance are found in Him, and our Redeemer is abundant in His salvation! And yet “I urge you then, family, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God…”, because He is so worthy, and we are so loved!!
