I know both Protestants and Catholics observe this. Honestly, I was not introduced to this growing up in the church in which I was saved (5) and baptized (13 or 14 I think). So I have not given it much thought. My husband buys ice cream like they will stop making it so he had better stock up (I'm not kidding) and he ensures I have the flavors I like too even though ice cream is not my go to for dessert. But if its there...well...'could you just give me a small bowl of that cherry please'? LOL!

Maybe movies? I like movies and often watch one almost every night. Could be a time for me to study and pray more. If I were to give up coffee, I would need a heart monitor. sad I know.

I wish I could have coffee or caffeine again, but for some reason, this past year, I became ultra-sensitive to caffeine. wahh!

I just started watching movies again; one Friday, one Saturday, so I might not cut that out just yet.

Some people do a digital fast, where they cut out all devices. That would be the hardest fast for me to do.

Lent is a 40-day (excluding Sundays) Christian liturgical season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, symbolizing Jesus Christ's time of temptation in the wilderness

What are you fasting from for 40 days?

I'll go first:
1. No Ice Cream
2. No Candy
3. Only drinking water and caffeine-free tea

I know I said no ice cream, but I also better add no gelato, no frozen custard, no frozen yogurt, and no other similar frozen dessert. Just mentioning it so it's known that I won't be trying to finagle my way into having something very ice cream like 🚫

Well I'm late to the effort anyway, but like I said, I really don't think about it cause was not taught where I grew up. Sorry about the caffeine. I once started using only decaff but when I spoke to my doctor about it, she said the chems they use to decaff are worse than the caffeine. But now researchers are all about how coffee is actually good for you when not had in excess. I drink usually only 2 cups per day....but strong coffee.

I have changed what I will watch now on TV or movies. Some stuff I might have watched I no longer do. :)

When I was younger my parents made me give up candy for Lent. Then Easter arrived and it was like Christmas coming early as far as the candy was concerned.

I'm going grocery shopping tomorrow at my local super Walmart, and now I'm thinking about buying various frozen confectionaries.

not fasting. i haven't heard of born again Christians involving themselves in a lent ritual. some people are more observant by reading the Bible more & sacrificing this or that. during christmas & easter, i do read more Christian literature.

I’ve actually failed on just about everything I said I was fasting from lol but I have been reading the Bible more also, so I completely understand.

I just never celebrated lent in my life, so I thought it’d be fun.

while growing up, mom & dad raised us as catholic so we celebrated lent. we had to give up sweets. by course, when they weren't around we ate them.

My mom went to an all Catholic girls school and my dad’s new wife is Catholic. I think my sister and I are the only Christians in the family and I’m the only one that practices (I think). Maybe Lent is mostly a Catholic thing.

I looked it up on Google for the first time before posting this thread, so I literally don’t know much about it.

yes, mostly a catholic ritual. have you & your sister talked to the family about getting saved?

Good question, um, I’ve talked to my dad about Jesus/God and he told me that he doesn’t believe in it and will never believe in it, then gave me a story on how when he was little, all he wanted to do was play with kids outdoors on Sundays but when he’d go to their house, they were never home cause they would beat church, so I guess just that little thing deterred him from wanting to know God/Jesus for the rest of his life.

My brother Alex said he wants nothing to do with Jesus/God, yet he has seen me every single day practice in our mother’s home. So at least he got to have some modeling as he grew up. He is 20 years younger than I am, and I have brought him to church, and he has read some of Matthew and we have prayed together many times as he grew up.

My mother says she is a Christian, so maybe she is but she definitely doesn’t practice.

I have a step mother and two half siblings. I have tried with my two half siblings but their Catholic mother is very protective and basically told me not to talk to them anymore, while also telling me that I am a fake Christian, when in reality, she doesn’t even know me well enough to make that statement.

that's a catholic's famous last words: 'i don't want to talk about it". they say that because they don't know what they are talking about, they are uninformed on the Bible. very rarely did we go out & play with neighborhood kids because our parents wouldn't let us. we were always getting beat. for anyone who thinks they are Christian, they ought to learn James 1: 22-25. sorry to hear this about your family. i witnessed to my younger brother for 41 years, & he would not accept Jesus. in august of 2024, he hung himself by rope.

That puts me to tears @Karlon

My brother is highly intelligent, was in the top percentile in his class up until this class year. His senior year, he already had enough units to graduate, so this whole year he has been ditching school, joined a gang, got an area code tattooed on his neck of his gang, along with LA tattooed on his arm because I think he desires a challenge and maybe being in a gang offers that to him, I don’t know.

I pray for him constantly and hope that he makes the decision to follow Jesus eventually.
