I would say NZ roads can be dangerous, we have had high road tolls (deaths, casualties) and inattentive drivers. Yea our roads are not designed for pedestrians. Some don't even have footpaths and you have to walk in the ditch. Some are not asphalt or tar sealed its just gravel in the countryside.

I think also our public transport system is not the best for our population and basically everyone over the age of 15 needs their own car, to be able to go to work and have independence.

Actually that Fiat is small like a Mini Cooper, but only 2 door. Though anything imported to NZ from Europe is going to be expensive, even if its cheap to buy elsewhere. It costs to ship stuff. Japan is relatively close, plus they don't need their older stock/fleet so NZ takes them.

Oh there is this NZ movie called 'Goodbye Pork Pie' it's pretty funny. There was also one called 'The fastest Indian'? I think it was, and one of our racers - we call them 'boy racers' is famous even though he died young in a crash called Bruce Maclaren. There is a school and road named after him in my town.
The Mini Cooper is English. It's half the car at twice the price compared to the FIAT 500.

yea pretty pricy. There is a Mini Cooper dealer here. Never driven one though, my cousin has one even though he's tall. They look cute, but Suzuki Swift is the better deal for a small car, and comes in many colours.

Is colour of car important to you? For some it's a deal breaker.

I like the green. My previous 500 (hardtop) was "espresso." Certainly color is important, but unless awful it's not a deal breaker.

I wouldn't buy a black car cos it gets unbearably hot in harsh nz sun.

Most common car colour is white and silver, red fades, dark colours fade and show dirt easily. I had a red Mitsubishi mirage coupe for my first car. It faded to pinkish. Of course I didn't know this when I bought it and it looked pretty nice when it was new. But to keep it looking good requires $$ which I don't really have to spend on a car colour..

Huh just looked at fiat 500 on trademe - where ppl can buy and sell. Older models are reasonably affordable but it varies. They had 60 listings. I think its a good little car for a single person carrying just one passenger. It won't do for a family.
Newer ones have gone electric.
All the ones I see have roof - hardtop? Vintage models look interesting but not sure how they would drive on our roads. Cos they are little they may get bullied by the bigger vehicles.

There weren't very many convertibles made. The electric followed the ICE versions. There's a new hybrid version only sold in Italy. And while it does have 4 seats, there's little room in the back seat except for pets or small children. I don't have kids at home anymore so I only need one seat. Even my wife rarely rides in it.

I think most cars are turning hybrid, or electric these days. I have yet to convert because, our garage, which has the power where you can plug and charge your car up, is full of mum and dad's stuff that you cannot even get in to park.

So if I did buy electric I would need a looooong extension cord.

I think hybrids are the way to go for most buying new these days, though only really Toyota and Nissan have reliable models - Prius and Leaf respectively. They have lasted for more than 10 years, but its risky buying a second hand hybrid because of the age of the battery, rather than the mileage.

The one thing I don't really like about hybrids is that whiny noise they make when they start off...its just different from an ICE which you know right away when it is accelerating or starting up because it makes an engine noise. Like vroom where a hybrid kind of squeaks away like a mouse on steroids.

Honda vs Toyota?
Toyota from those two, it is more reliable, even tho both come from Japan.

Electric or Gas?
Definately gas, not a big fan of electric ones, even tho they would be quiet to drive. that is a good thing.. also can be a bad thing.

Hybrid?
I prefer full petrol ones for now..

Utes or minivans?
I drive a wagon (?), we call it "farmers car", loosely translated..
Auto.jpg

But my dream car would be RAM... Although it is loud, at least the ones I have heard. Also RAMs consume too much petrol for my liking..

There once was a RAM parked next to my car and it's hood was about the same level as my cars roof!
Well, I am not allowed to drive RAM anyway, so, a useless dream.

Are Asian drivers truly the worst?
Huh, never heard that before..

Oh RAMs are scary because they are HUGE and I always think they going to ram into me, and do ram raids.
They are like the modern day Hummers remember them? Totally gigantic cars.

Well..Asian drivers, to say the least, if actually from an Asian country where there are hardly any road rules, can be...erratic. Otherwise, I, who is not from Asia (descent, but not actually born) would say it could be because of our side eyes as opposed to round eyes, but actually, on second thought, that ought to make Asians BETTER at driving, with our extra vision, and even driving at night.

But since everyone wears glasses now, maybe not.

Yes, RAMs are huge, that is one point why I like them.. :D
Hummers are ever more rare to see here than RAMs. I believe I have never even seen a Hummer in real life, at least I do not remember..

But aren't Asian then better at driving if they have almost none traffic rules? Don't know how much accidents happen there though..
They learn how to drive in a chaos (maybe, at least to us that have strick rules, it might seem so), many lanes and people going crisscross with their vehicles.

Left is left, and right is right, except when left is wrong, or right is wrong, so perhaps good drivers just go in the middle. On a never ending median strip...

Could be onto something with the chaos, after all China used to be a bicycle only country, as did many others before they discovered four wheelers. Two wheels good, four wheels bad.

Finally, someone is bringing up a respectable car here. (y):LOL: I've been following this topic for a while, but since the discussion was only about small cars, I wasn't very motivated to participate the discussion, even though I actually have gasoline in my blood.

Yes, RAMs are very cool, and I would love to drive one someday. (y)

Well, I am not allowed to drive RAM anyway, so, a useless dream.
Too bad, but why is that?

Ram isn't a car. It's a truck. Cars are different from trucks. They are both automobiles, but look at the title of this thread...it's about CARS.
