Tattoos, yes or no?

I know there are some Christians who believe being inked is alright, and I know there are some who think it's not good. Can I get some opinions? Cause I'm turning 18 this year and my cousin wants to get me a tattoo for my birthday, don't know if it's a good idea :/
 
And a cutting for the soul ye do not put in your flesh; and a writing, a cross-mark, ye do not put on you; I am Jehovah.Lev. 19:28please don't try to do it, that is what God says about tattoo.

i got a tattoo of a spider web in my arm in the year 2000 i thought it was cool then but now i regret i ever did that and i am planning to remove the tattoo when i saved enough because there are certain sins in my life that i could not overcome i pray but i keep committing the same sin over and over it felt like i am attached to it so i interviewed some of my christian friends who got tattoos and they all tell me the same thing.
 
There's nothing inherently wrong with tattoos.

But get a tattoo when you want one, if you want one. Not for a birthday present because someone else wants you to have one.
 
1.) There is nothing wrong with a tattoo.
2.) The verse that Ola cited does not refer to modern day tattoos so don't use the verse in Leviticus to convict you otherwise.
3.) Get it if you want it, not because someone else wants you to.
4.) Don't let other people decide for you. You're a young woman. I mean unless you are still living in your parents house and they don't think it's alright, then you can decide for yourself :)
 
I'm not a tattoo person, but like NKZ my friends that got them when they were younger some regret it. I also have a couple of friends who have gotten more. I would probably get it somewhere where it can be hidden if needed, like for a job.

Here's the key 'my cousin wants me to'. You aren't expressing a desire to do it yourself, you're considering it because someone else wants you to. That alone is your answer. Getting a tat is a personal choice and should have no influence from anyone else. If your desire is not 100% your own, then don't do it. Getting a tat should take you a while to determine if you want it and what you want. Most people who regret tats do so because they make bad choices. They have wrong motives, they pick bad images or the wrong part of their body. Right now you have wrong motives. Don't do it. If farther down the road, because of your own choices, you want to, then go for it. Just spend a lot of time picking what you want and where.

I thought tattoos were okay and even got a couple myself many, many years ago, and yes, I was a Christian then, too. I also had my nose pierced for awhile. Did I feel condemned doing so? Nope. In fact, recently I was at a women's conference and they handed out temporary tattoos that said "Redeemed" and many of the women at this conference, including a couple of Pastor's wives, stated that they were going to have it done permanently and some women already have.

Now, here's my take on tattoos knowing all this. I read somewhere that getting a tattoo is essentially telling God that He made a mistake. It's like saying, "Look, God, You should have put an apple on my ankle but since You didn't, I'll do it for You." It is like telling God that He forgot to do something when He lovingly created you. This is what made it so that I will never get another tattoo, though I will admit that I was tempted at the women's retreat to get Redeemed tattooed on me. :)

Yet, here is the issue: will you go to hell or not be used by God or be less valuable if you have or get tattoos? Nope. Even if you were into demonic things and got demonic tattoos and then got saved, it matters not. If you're a Christian getting demonic tattoos...well, you better check your heart, right? The point is that God looks at the heart. What is your motive for getting tattooed? I personally don't suggest that Christians get tattoos but I also don't judge them, condemn them or look down on them if they do. :)

I think you need to examine your reasons why. If you're doing something just to be like everyone else, that can be very dangerous to your testimony, and also to your soul. Spiritually speaking, we are what we eat. The more we have fellowship with worldly attitudes, philosophies, desires, the further away from God we will get.
 
As an old school Roman Catholic, I can tell you that tatoos - and piercings, for that matter - are regarded as "mutilation of the body," in direct contradiction to the proper regard of our corporal bodies as temporary houses of our souls and "temples of the Holy Spirit." Not sure how it's done today, but a reflection of this is seen in the practice of, in the event someone has a limb amputated, you have it properly buried, very ceremonially, with the rest of the body ultimately to join it in the grave. Orthodox Jews, too, practice this, and, if you're an Orthodox Jew and get a tatoo, you cannot be buried in the sanctified ground of an Orthodox Jewish cemetery.
 
it's a mark on your body you will live with for the rest of your life.. i think "my cousin wants me to" is a poor reason to do something so lasting.

try drawing on yourself with a permanent marker first. then it will only last a few weeks and you can change it or re-ink it or w/e whenever. .

i'd ask your cousin for this for your birthday:

Most of my cousins, frankly, are idiots. Your cousin wants you to get a tattoo for your birthday? Your birthday?Eighteen is - arguably - the age of "adulthood," when you can, presumably, make grownup decisions for yourself, not allow a cousin to manipulate you into something that boneheaded. Geez, I'm glad your cousin didn't want you to mainline heroin for your birthday, or smoke crack, or go on a crime spree.

There is a young lady who draws on herself, very pretty things like flowers and stuff. :) Not in a bold 'look at me' kind of way, either. :) I don't know if she uses sharpies, but it is definitely a great option...and then you're not stuck with something you regret ten years down the road. :)

We all need to ask of ourselves, "Whom do we serve? To whom do we belong?" Are we more concerned with connecting ourselves with this Godless secular world through adopting its practices, or are we the property of Jesus Christ?

 
Thanks for all the responses! :) but I never said I'm considering because my cousin wants me to, she wants to get me one if that is what I want, so she isn't pressuring me or saying I should do it, she's letting me decide. I know if I do get one it will be a bible verse (possibly Galations 2:20) I just wanted to hear some other opinions as my parents stick to the Leviticus scripture that says it's wrong, but I don't think I believe that. I think as a Christian everything I should be doing should bring glory to God, and I was simply wondering if this was a good way in other Christians eyes to bring more glory to Him. Thanks a ton for all the help though guys! :D x

Yes, that is essentially it. As the Bible says, all things are legal for us but not all things are beneficial. It is always best to look at the tattoo thing from that perspective. :) I know that when I got my first tattoo, it was after 2 years of thinking it through and really considering what I wanted and then, a few months before getting it done, I visited some places and looked over what they had to offer and picked very carefully. I love my first tattoo. Now, with my second one, I impulsively went and had it done one weekend. I hate that tattoo. So, it's all about the motives and the care and, yes, truly, if it glorifies God. :)
 
When I hear people asking about is tattoos right or wrong, yes or know. many people will quote straight away. this scripture.

Leviticus 19:28
You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord.

But the thing is, we are not under law, we are under grace. I would say, its your choice. longs its not demonic and represents any form of evil, then maybe yes it is ok to have a tattoo.
 
Your personality and what you like and don't like changes. Everything changes. Tattoos don't.

I imagine that gansters who get tattoos of naked women on them really start regretting it when they decided that they want to settle down with a wife and kids.

Say I was into video games and got Super Mario tattooed on me, then I grow up and realize that I wanted to give myself to Jesus by doing missionary work. I might look at my tattoo and think it's stupid. Or get a tribal band on my arm and then gain weight and the band dosen't go all around my arm anymore. Or a tattoo of my favorite band and then I get tired of listening to the same music over and over again.

Sounds trivial but happens all the time.
