Schools have a variety of classes nowadays...how come none of them are dedicated to common knowledge? Such as how to vote, do taxes, balancing a checkbook, cooking, cleaning, etc.

That's because parents can't teach what THEY weren't taught..
I disagree. I feel like it is a cop out to blame my mistakes on my parents. I own it. A person has access to proper parental educational assists to help them make sound decisions with parenting. Unfortunately; ignorance is bliss and sometimes people do not seek out the tools they need to make wise parenting decisions. Instead they fly through the yrs by the seat of their pants and yrs later are dealt with the reality that they were a crappy parent who merely did what they "thought" was best. Generational disfunctions get passed down one generation at a time unless the cycle is stopped through Christ, education, and support systems.
Oh my gosh. I vented myself almost to tears about this very reality yesterday.
When my mother went to school, she took Home Ec (where she learned cooking and sewing), there was woodshop, accounting, and all that jazz. When I was in high school most of that wasn't there and they may or may not have had an accounting class one year? Nevertheless, it wasn't required.
Quite a few of my peers are starting from nothing on cooking and sewing and building and balancing a checkbook. And all that kind of practical stuff. Smh.
Thats too bad. I had all those classes avail to me grades 7 -12. It is sad that young people do not in some areas. Although; I didnt have internet and a plethora of youtube videos like this generation does to learn. If someone wants to learn, they have access to learn just about anything online! I know I take advantage of the internet alot if I need to know something;I simply type it in and wala! Im in instant school

I Google (and otherwise internet search) lots of things. It still makes a lot of sense to just go ahead and teach it in school though. Especially since this stuff once was taught in school...why they would take it out is a bit of a mystery to me...I mean, if it ain't broke...right?The internet is useful, but it can't replace everything. Nothing replaces have someone there teaching and guiding you. You watch those little driving videos they have with the no-zones and stuff, but you really gotta get out there and do it, with someone experienced who is there and guides you in the beginning. (Which reminds me, my school didn't have driver's ed either. I mean sheesh lapeesh.) Sometimes people just need a little more than a Google search, ya know? (Obviously for driving, but for other stuff too. I just used driving to make a point.) That's why internet learning doesn't work for everyone. But the internet does supplement well. It's like taking vitamins/supplements; they're good to help you out some, but you still need food.
P.S. I can drive and cook, just in case I gave any other impression

I thought I was justified in blaming my abusive foster parents for my screwed up life. Nope! Holding grudges & playing the blame-game was literally killing me! I had to learn (actually still learning) through professional counseling how to work through all of the pain, how to forgive for real, how to establish boundaries in my life and deal with people in matter-of-fact ways rather than reacting from impulsiveness and false perceptions.
As I said, I'm still learning, praise the Lord! \

I also took home ec, where I learned so many valuable skills. It got me started on sewing and cooking. I wish I could have taken shop, too, but girls weren't allowed to in those days. I wonder if I would have become more handy if I had been allowed to take shop?
The other classes I really benefitted from were typing, vocal music and grammar, in English and French. And yes, most teachers have never taken grammar, so how can they teach it now? Losing grammar is the beginning of illiteracy.
I was put through the "matriculation" stream, which meant a lot of math and sciences to get into university. The only thing I used the math for, was when I had to take required calculus and stats courses. Then I never used it again. Plus, we had a heavy review of Algebra, which I had not done for 9 years, cause I was out of school, which is all I really needed.
I did take science in University, and I do not regret it. But I really don't use much of it today. I wish I had focused on languages and music. Or just practical things like trades - things you can use your whole life.
As for the internet, it seems to me like you cannot eat it, drive it, plant it, or anything else practical. I consider it a fun waste of time! Seriously, we had a lot more reliable sources with books and libraries back 50 years ago. I rarely believe anything I read on the internet, including scholarly papers. If they get passed through the internet, they probably are wrong. I just read a big study about how gluten does not actually cause any more problems for people than gluten free! (Not including Celiac's of course) But people get on the hype, no scientific basis, all experiential and follow a difficult diet for no reason. And yes, it is another link to a study. But this one seems legit? Who knows?

It's true that with the invention of the internet things have gotten a lot easier in learning and accessing. But still, I think it would be handy if schools brought these classes back. With sowing and so forth. Unless I'm doing some work that requires research, I consider the internet to be more of a time killer than anything as well.
The way I see it, there's two types of knowledge in this world. Practical and theoretical. Practical knowledge is something you'll use on a far more common basis. Schools in this day and age seem to focus more on theoretical knowledge than anything.
