Most collection agencies just want you to pay something, even if small, per month.
It lets them know you are serious about taking care of it.

I'm surprised that with the current state of the economy, that collection agencies aren't super overwhelmed? Stall out the student loan crisis?

It's not a student loan. It's the tuition for my final year of undergrad. I didn't have any money to pay it, but the school let me finish my final year anyway. They told me to pay it when I can. Well, 13 months after graduating, I'm finally able to work on being able to pay it off, with the 15th month being complete with it. So what do I do? Do I not call the school, then? Do I just deal with the collection agency?

I don't think you killed the thread, I'm just not sure if I can give jsr any helpful advice so I was waiting for other people to do it. :p

Edit: jsr, from what little I know of these things, you should call the school. The collections agency won't be able to help you as much as the school will.

rant of the day:

a patient hasn't been to my office in a couple of years. turns out, patient was going somewhere else, but that office closed. no biggie. patient gives me new insurance information. i tell patient what the chiropractic benefits are, and patient lets me know the other office only charged [insert amount here], which didn't match up with the information i just stated.

it doesn't matter what the other office charged. melita goes by the rules. sho 'nuff!

It touched my heart to the point of making me want to cry....and Blond does not cry....or it takes a lot to get me to that point....It as very touching.

Well, yeah, you can ask me anything, but that doesn't mean I'll know the answer. :p

The only experience I have with that stuff is secondhand experience, it was a crossed wire with a hospital applying the payment to the wrong account, then saying don't pay anything while we sort this out, then somehow it got sent to collections. The hospital called off the collection agency because it was all a mistake to begin with. But it's just one case, and it's not even my personal experience, just someone I know.

If everything goes right, I'd like to move out of my step dad's and step sister's at the end of the year. Is this going to hurt and prevent me from moving out down the road?

When the school told you to "pay it when you could", did you get that in writing? Otherwise, it's your word against theirs.

I would most definitely call the school first. I wouldn't rely on just dealing with the collection agency so that when you do pay, you know exactly who's getting your money.

Having things in writing is crucial. Save every notice, receipt, and agreement. Research your questions on Google and find out what your legal rights are. There might even be a hotline you can call to ask about what steps you should take. I would try to research legal sites that specialize in dealing with universities and student payments.

Again, if you don't have the school's "agreement" in writing... Unfortunately, you won't have anything to back up your side of the story.

Well, they let me go attend my spring classes, which was my final semester of undergrad ever. Had they really wanted to, they could have prevented me from doing so because my fall tuiton wasn't paid for. And I called the school back in April and told them I finally had a job, and I'd pay it in full at the end of summer. The guy I spoke with said he'd make a note on my account. And now a month a half later, I get a bill from an agency that was written on Memorial Day. So I don't really understand what happened. But yeah I plan on calling the school tomorrow.

i gave my sister the accountant a quick call, and she said typically once it's with a collection agency you have to deal with them, but it's worth calling the school.

she also said many times a collection agency gives payment plans?
and often will settle for a partial amount (percentage)?

in any case, i'll say a prayer. ♥
