Same here, but there is one phrase I dislike even more....."boys will be boys"...I heard it so many times as an excuse for bullying.

I was never fond of....

"You can lead a man to a fridge, but you can't make him fish on Tuesdays."

Never made much sense to me.

all of these would have made it more difficult for me....I prefer just straight memorization...
I never could do the planet saying....and I preferred soh cah toa to the alternative of Some old horse caught another horse taking oats away....

HUH?????? I are confusalted :p

I'm not American and I never had any trouble spelling the word 'Mississippi' (but being an Aussie, nor did I have any real use for the word - haha!). I learnt this one from TV or a movie or something when I was really little: "M, I, double-S, I, double-S, I, double-P, I." Easy.

I have mild dyslexia, but wasn't diagnosed until much later in life. Despite all of the reading I do (fiction and non) I still struggle with the appropriate times to use 'affect' and 'effect'.

sine, cosine....you've gone off on a tangent. :)

the planets was something about a mother serving pizzas....I just memorized the order, the mnemonic made it harder on me.
soh cah toa was math.....sin, cos, and tan

there's a mnemonic for the hundred eighty-seven bones in the wrist, too.

i'll spare you. :)

North, South, East, West = Never Eat Soggy Wheatbix. There was an alternative: Never Entertain Sexy Women. But the first seems to make more sense to me. ;)

there's some truth to that second option, too.

Sorry Tintin.
Everyone speaks over each other on this thread.

It's like having dinner with my daughter and neice.

I had a road trip once....800 miles. With lots of coffee and chocolate, and a 5 year old cousin that asked "Why? Every 3 seconds! Ahhh all confined in a mini van with a loudly belching uncle and an obsessive compulsive aunt! Wow I miss being 15. Lol

BTW, You should see Utah's grammar thread.
It's at 126,789 posts.

First thread that l've seen that has a post from every member on CC.
"Ain't" was a big hit.

'ain't' used to be proper English.

ain't it time we brought it back?
