Hebrews 4:12
"For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart."

Man is created in the image of God. God is Spirit. Fundamentally, man is a spirit being, that has a soul and inhabits a physical body. The part of us that is in God's image is the spirit. The spirit is the real "me", deeper than thought and feeling and it is what relates to God. The soul is how we relate to the world around us.

Adam was good but incomplete. God offered Adam the opportunity to be completed by the fruit of the tree of life. That fruit would have made Adam eternal. The tree of life represents the uncreated life of God.

We know all too well that Adam chose the devil's alternative, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God told Adam not to eat that fruit. That fruit brings death. It represents the life that is in the soul, the life that enabled Adam to exist in a kind of limbo until he made a choice.

Adam's disobedience brought about his spiritual death. This obviously does not mean the end of existence. It does mean separation from God. Adam and Eve tried to cover up and hide from God. The spirit of man, in effect, became submerged into his soul. The mind of man was darkened and he has gone his own way ever since. Man now lives by the principle of good and evil. But what man considers good or evil is not necessarily God's judgement. So man's ways are not God's ways and God rejects man's ways, no matter how "good" our intentions may be.

The part of the being that is born again the the spirit. When we are born again, the greatest possible change takes place. We who were dead in trespass and sin are made alive to God once more. We likely do not realise this or the implications. All we know is that something is different, even though we cannot explain it.

This is only the beginning of our spiritual journey. We are spiritual infants to begin with. So why do we need the Sword of the Spirit active in our lives? We said before that the spirit became submerged in the soul. This is amplified by education and experience growing up in the world. Very young children are more spiritually aware but lose that as the world promotes the realm of the soul, which is self will, mind and emotion. A few who get into the occult retain the predominance of the spirit, but that is rare.

God's remedy for this issue is to bring about the division of soul and spirit. Mostly we are unaware of the difference between, for example, flashing thoughts of the mind and intuition in the spirit. We will learn by experience that our thoughts may not be from God, but our own good intentions.

So how does God effect this division? What we need is revelation in our spirit being. This is something only the Holy Spirit can grant us. It was important enough that Paul would pray that Christians would receive the Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation. This is not a superficial mental understanding of the Bible. It is truth that sets us free.

We can read a passage in the Bible many times. It may not have much of an impact. Then one day, it is as it becomes alive to us. For example, we may struggle with condemnation, a common problem for new believers. We read Romans 8:1 but the problem remains. One day, we read it again but somehow it is different. We realise that it means exactly what it says. From that time on, we refuse to accept condemnation from man or devil.

The more revelation we receive, the stronger the spirit man becomes. As we live by revelation, rather than thought and feeling, our spirit man rules instead of the natural life we inherited from Adam. Our minds may well argue with us. We need to learn to reprogram our minds so that they do not contradict what we know in the inner realm of our spirit.

To be born again costs nothing. To be a spiritual man costs everything. If we are not diligent and do not seek revelation, we will shrivel up spiritually and be dominated by the soul. That leads to confusion, frustration, boredom and mere existence as a Christian. The process of growing is often a roller coaster of failure and defeat and times of rest and blessing. As we grow, the extremes become less and our experience more stable. Our circumstances may not be much different, but our response will be. And once the pressure on us has achieved its purpose, God will release it. And then He will begin to work on another aspect of our character.

We can and should come to the place called "the knowledge of the truth". This is when we know that we are born again and nothing can shake us. We know that we are dead to sin, self, Satan, the Law and the world. We know that we are new creations in Christ. We know God and we know Jesus. We are led by intuition in the spirit, not be reason, logic and emotion. It's a place of tremendous peace and contentment. Seek it with all your heart. Ask for God's grace during the trials that must come. God wants us to be free far more than we do ourselves.

Did God separate himself from men? I see he still related to Cain and Enoch and Noah. Paul says God was not far from men but men could feel after God and perhaps find Him, and in Him we live and move and have our being. Was the problem rather our sense of guilt from our treachery and the negative spinoffs from that that needed healing, rather than God's sense of outrage?

People are flesh, soul, spirit.

Gen 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Adam was created in the image of God.

Rom 5:14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

Adam was made in the figure of Christ.

The image of God is the image of Christ.

Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Joh 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

The Word is the plan of God in the beginning to come in the future in flesh.

God created Adam in the image that He would show up in the future and that is an innocent nature in flesh.

The image of God is an innocent nature in flesh which Adam and Eve were created an innocent nature in flesh.

God glorified that body and sits on the throne in heaven which is the throne of God and the Lamb, God in the glorified body of the man Christ Jesus, and the saints will put off the flesh and have a glorified body like Christ's glorified body.

Ecc 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

The spirit goes back to God who gave it regardless of how the person behaved on Earth which is our spiritual connection with God.

No person retains their spirit in the afterlife, and the spirit is no longer part of the saints when they are with Jesus.

The man Christ Jesus said to the Father in to your hands I commend my spirit for all spirits go back to God who gave them and the man Christ Jesus does not retain His spirit that is imparted to a human in the afterlife

The saints do not have the spirit in the afterlife for it is not part of them for all spirits go back to God who gave them even the wicked, and if we are that spirit in the afterlife and we go to be with God then why would the people who were wicked spirits also go back to God.

The spirit is our connection to God given to all people and all the spirits go back to God and is not part of any human in the afterlife whether they were with God or not.

The saints will have a glorified body and not the flesh so they do not need the spirit to have a connection with God for our connection is with the Holy Spirit.

Only in the flesh we need the spirit but in the afterlife the saints will have a glorified body and do not need the spirit.

Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Mat 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Act 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

Mat 16:26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Heb 10:39 But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

The soul is what will live on forever and be part of people whether with God or not.

The saints will put off the flesh and be a soul with a glorified body, and the spirit will not be a part of them in the afterlife.

In the afterlife all souls will be part of a person whether with God or not.

All spirits go back to God no matter if they are with God or not, and the saints do not retain the spirit in the afterlife.

Paul sums it up nicely: "For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh".

Galatian 5:
16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

The descent of man was progressive. Romans 1 traces that sorry tale. There is still a knowing in the spirit of man that God is real, but that is easily overriden as the increasing number of atheists attests. It is the mind that argues against the truth. The mind is open to Satan as is seen in the garden of Eden. Romans 1 says that the foolish mind of man was darkened (verse 21). Verses 18-32 tell us that moral corruption is the result.

The problem is not with God. He loves His creation, so much so that He sent Jesus to die for us. Yet His wrath is also revealed against men who suppress the truth by their wickedness. We are seeing this in Western culture right now. Nations that used to accept God's ways, at least outwardly, are increasingly rebelling against God. Laws are being passed, not just to tolerate wickedness but to force those who object to remain silent. Proposals are before the UN that would, in effect, legalise paedophilia. At the same time, there is increasing strife all around the world, increasing authoritarianism, more natural disasters, more fear and depression, (often with good reason) and more violence and hatred.

God's judgement is to leave man to his own devices. "God gave them over to........." is stated 3 times in the latter verses of Romans 1. It's obvious from the NT that God hates sin. But it's not only because it offends God's holy nature. It is also because of what it does to His creation. Don't forget that God erased all but 8 people from the earth at one time. That was because of their evil ways.

Yes, and this war can be won. The flesh can be overcome. Christians need to know this, otherwise they will live in defeat. It is good to say, "I am a wretched man", but we should not stay there. "Thanks be to God, through Christ!" Romans 8 follows chapter 7. Many Christians seem unaware of this truth.

50 years of tribulation, defeat and failure have brought me to complete dependence on Jesus. I've learned most things the hard way. I've also spent much time reading and studying God's word and the writings of spiritual men and women. I also had a mentor for 30 years who knew Jesus in a way I still find amazing. Any believer can have a similar journey, hopefully with less of the self inflicted grief that I put myself through. It's worth it.

Not true. The born again retain the soul to the degree that they give up the self life that is in the soul. God will not accept a dead spirit. The born again spirit is the real person. Without a spirit, we do not have eternal life.

I understand completely I am on the same journey I found God in a way I never dreamed I felt his actual power I was so stunned and amazed I could only sit there unable to move just smiing like a goof ball things were never the same after that his holy presence would fill my room like a golden thik fog you are IN him not just with him IN him you suddenly get to sink in him and you know him in a way that no amount of studying will give you

Jesus himself would sometimes visit me in perseon this was also when I experienced the fear of the Lord I was in bed under my blanket and he suddenly came and his mighty presence his kingship made my body tremble and shake I dared not look at him yet I was smiling so wide and said I am under your feet you suddenly know his might why he is God

There is much more but this new journey eventually made the enemy come at me big time my health got so bad and still is I tried so hard to be strong but eventually all the tribulation pain demons coming to me in my room I admit it got so bad I cursed God out several times and self inflicting stubborn as I am caused it to get worse and worse I have not felt his presence in so so long I stilled talked to him all the time and I tried sometimes to stand again but I just didn;t have the strength and I had to deal with it all on my own I was so sick of being the defeated victim

Luckily I jad one person who never gave up on me
@Thunderrr-mental he knew how broken I was and would always be there for me but mark my words I will reach to the stage you are at the storm you went through is the same one I am in but you and I know what kies ahead and I can't wait I get so exited just thinking about it

As I see it:
We are body, soul, and spirit formed in such a way that we're finite reflections made in the image and likeness of our infinite creator. The Lord is a triune entity composed of the Word of God, who became the Son of God, when he was born here on Earth, the heavenly Father and the Holy Spirit. Based upon scripture, they are allos, Greek for another of the same kind, each being self-aware and infinite. Jesus said to the apostle Philip, when he asked Jesus to show them the Father, if you've seen me, you've seen the Father; and if you can't believe my words given to me from the Father then believe my works which were also given to me from the Father.

Jesus said regarding the Holy Spirit in John 16, the Spirit speaks not of his own, but whatever he hears, that shall he speak, and he will reveal things to come. Being infinite, Jesus was able to suffer infinitely while on the cross and therefore able to purchase an infinite atonement for the finite individuals who were to suffer for infinity. All thought the Father and the Holy Spirit didn't have our sins miraculously put upon themselves as did Jesus, they too suffered infinitely when forced by their holiness to forsake Jesus and separated themselves from him because of our sins.

Our body is further divided into three parts according to scripture, which is flesh, blood and bone. If the body is thus divided, it only stands to reason that our souls and spirits are likewise divided. So that our souls would be composed of emotion, intellect, and volition. And for our spirits: conscience, intuition, and the Holy Spirit for those who have been indwelt by the Spirit, which is how we become holy temples of the living God.

In our bodies, souls, and spirits: I suspect that the body reflects Jesus, the Word of God, the soul reflects the Father, and the spirit reflects the Holy Spirit. In the soul, intellect reflects Jesus as the Word of God, volition reflects the Father, and emotion reflects the Holy Spirit. In the spirit, intuition reflects Jesus, the conscience reflects the Father, and obviously the Holy Spirit as himself. I wonder if this is why the number of mankind is 666.

People are flesh, soul, spirit.

Actually people are spirit, soul, and body

1 Thessalonians 5:23
And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

God created man in His own image, and God is a Spirit and so are we

John 4:24
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

We are a spirit that possesses a soul (well, some possess their soul), and we live in a body.

Spirit, soul, body - in that order.

Without a spirit, we do not have eternal life.

Yep, the eternal spirit living inside the soul is what makes man live forever.

It's just the matter of where man will be living forever, in hell or in the presence of the Lord.

This one way man is different from animals. They have a soul, but they do not have an eternal spirit so when a dog dies, he ceases to exist.
