Hey Everyone,

We had a thread going recently about how singles -- with no one to put the rails on what we choose to eat, might have very... unconventional food choices for breakfast.

And how does this effect play out for all our other meals throughout the day?

For example, how about the social media trend of "Girl Dinner", which, according to a quick Google search is:

A small, often aesthetically pleasing snack plate made up of readily available foods like cheese, fruit, cold cuts, and leftovers -- essentially a "snack meal" as a quick and easy alternative to cooking a full meal. Typically associated with women sharing such meals on TikTok, the term is seen as a playful way to describe a simple meal with minimal preparation.

Now of course, this could extend to Guy Dinners as well.

I have to confess, I am not in any way a cook. I don't seem to have the skill, patience, or passion for it, and often survive on things I'm sure most foodies would burn me at the stake for!

But as much as I would love to splurge on gourmet dishes and baked goods, my primary concern is health and weight management. A wonderful lady at a church I attended back home once held cooking classes in her home, but I knew I could never make her amazing recipes. Being by myself, I would snack all day and devour everything in record time. This beautiful woman also admitted the struggle to us herself, even though she had a family. She told us that the previous year she'd lost 40 pounds; was working on losing 40 the current year; and if she could lose another 40 the next, she'd finally be down to her goal weight.

I know myself well enough to know that if I took up cooking and became good at it, I would find myself in the exact same dilemma as her. I also find that I generally don't like to eat just any one thing, but rather raid the fridge to produce a mini-buffet with a small amount of most everything.

And so, in order to try to maintain a healthy weight and blood test measures that won't make my doctor hiss in concern, last night's Girl Dinner consisted of a few bites each of:

1. Salad and two spoonsful of vegetable soup. (Bleh. I eat veggies out of necessity, not because I actually like them.) Added a few spoonsful of canned beans for protein.

2. One small piece of frozen pizza (about the size of my palm.)

3. Two forksfull of spaghetti with parmesan cheese.

4. Three tater tots and one fish stick.

5. Roughly 10 red grapes (which color of grapes are your favorite?)

6. A few handsful of chocolate chips (always my biggest downfall but I'm trying.) I eat chocolate chips instead of bars so I can literally eat them one by one, trying to cut down on the amount of sugar I consume.

One thing is for sure... If I ever get married, adjusting to new meal habits might be a bit of a challenge!

What about you?

* Do you cook yourself full meals? What kinds of things? (Steak and potatoes? Ham and green bean casserole? A full pot roast?)

* Do set aside times for cooking things to freeze or meal prep, making for easy dinners throughout the week?

* How do you balance health and nutrition with things you actually like to eat?

* Do your eating patterns change much on day you have to work vs. a day you have off?

* What did YOU have last night for Girl - or Guy - Dinner?

Everyone is welcome to answer! :)

Along with hearing how other singles feed themselves, I also like hearing about how parents and married friends deal with feeding their families, especially when having to consider so many different preferences and allergies, etc.

Feel free to share a little insight into What Will Be on Your Plate on a an average night. :)

Your girl dinner sounds like a Turkish breakfast. Lots of different things, and only two bites of each item.

Turkey Girl Dinner...

Yeah, that's about right.

I've been known to be a bit of a turkey, more often than I should admit. 🦃🍗😎

I've never heard about a girl dinner before. Where is my rock, I suppose I need to hide underneath it..

If I have energy, then I cook full meals and meal prep also. Then my work (or someting else) drains all the energy from me and for a while I do not eat the way I want to eat, or my mood chances completely after I hit low blood sugars and binge whatever I can find in my cupboards, simultaniously... it is weird how everything can taste so good at the same time.. it is like having a craving of weird things (Err, I mean.. weirder than my normal weird stuff..) together, only on those occasions, tho. After those, I feel like I have lost or ruined all the good eating habits and benefits and could not care less for a while..

Being alone, I do not feel like eating at a certain time, tho I wish to. It is much easier to cook and eat "on time" when I have someone visiting me. Also, making more nutrious and versatile foods is much more likeable with someone else sharing it with you. The hardest part of cooking is to imagine what food to make, but basicly, on average days, I just throw whatever I can find that seems to go together on a pan.

On weekends I might eat better, at least I do eat breakfast.

Last night (3pm ) I was super hungry as last thing I ate was in the morning at 6am, so I threw in two small packets of noodles, corn and friend egg, saucing it with chilli mayo. So, not the heatlhiest meal..
I was supposed to eat a "snack" later in the evening after volleyball, but I didn't feel like it. After game nights, I usually try to make (I sooooo much want to say blueberry... apparently it is not it..) bilberry-banana smoothie with protein powder, etc. Otherwise, an evening snack could be tea and a piece of bread.

That brings me to my question: Is dinner the last thing you eat? How many times a day do you guys eat?

Here we usually eat breakfast, lunch, afternoon snacks (it is a coffee time ofc:coffee:), dinner and then an evening snack.

Oh, vegetables taste good, if made in some way (there is no way I am eating raw broccoli), but broccoli is my favourite, cabbage, cauliflower..., carrot not as plain itself, unless it is new carrot from the ground, but curry carrots are good, or the it just is my weird taste buds liking those.

Green grapes for me, preferably with some cheese.

Those of you that have hung out with me know I enjoy a good meal and you know breakfast is my favorite!
It's my favorite too. I prefer man-size portions. Nothing girly 'bout that for sure.

I eat three meals a day. Breakfast is usually a large diet coke and a mcmuffin with egg and sausage. Lunch is dinner leftovers or maybe a fast food burger. Supper is usually a nice quality meal. I go heavy on meat protein and fats, but don't exclude anything else.

when I am broke, I will probably have 1 meal a day or 1 meal every 2-3 days.
I am never home being in school full time, vegtables go to waste in the fridge, so when I have money eating out is my groceries.

Conclusion

Life: It is a re-occuring nightmare that never ends.

I bake a pizza once a week and it is good for three dinners.
I cook a pasta dish once a week and it is good for at least two dinners and a snack.
The pizza and pasta ingredients are almost identical, except the pizza has more and different types of cheeses.

I have found it best not to store up food in my fridge or freezer. More often than not it simply goes to waste.

What I eat on my days off is quite different from days I work, since on my days off I go out for coffee and buy a breakfast burrito at the same time, which I have hours later for brunch, since I do not eat breakfast per se. That is when and where I have started getting my pizza/pasta ingredients also, as they have freshly roasted sliced chicken breast, crumbled feta, and sliced red, orange, and yellow peppers as part of their salad bar set up, even at 8 in the morning. Today I also bought some pumpkin seeds mixed with thinly sliced almonds, plus craisins, for a snack. That was very economic compared to everything else. They always lift the lid to look and see what it is, probably because it is so light? I dunno. I do wonder. I mean, I have been a fairly regular shopper there for decades. Still, they peek, even after I have told them what it is. LOL. At work I normally have a chicken soup with thickly sliced toasted sour dough for brunch. Trying to get more variety into my diet does not work well, and I am averse to food prep any more beyond fashioning a pizza or cooking pasta. I had a slice of pizza when I got home from work yesterday, and part of a leftover vegetable samosa from dinner with my daughter and her aunt on Sunday. After a rather lengthy nap I ate my second piece of pizza for the evening. Tonight is two more pieces of pizza; tomorrow and Friday will be pasta. Last Friday I thought it would be nice to have corn chips with sour cream, salsa, and guacamole as a meal, something I had not done for a while. I finished off the sour cream and guacamole with my burrito this morning. There are a lot of things I cannot safely eat any more since my surgeries 4-5 years ago. My body just does not function normally any more, and that's all she wrote...

Now you're starting to sound like me. I'll throw together anything that doesn't clash flavor-wise.

Tomorrow I plan to melt some sharp cheddar, stir in some leftover guacamole and dip Ritz crackers in it for breakfast.

Ol’ Jim Beam never makes it through the night.😂😵‍💫
Somebody else used to be here, also liked Jim beam.

Never met old Jim myself, but I hear a lot about him. Apparently he's great for encouraging guys, but his eyesight ain't too good because he always picks bad looking girls.

Cried with laughter reading this thread, i'm still loving the novelty of a healthy feast or pigging out session when i feel like it, or sweet nothing when i don't. The only time i bother cooking a proper meal now, is when my youngest son stops the weekend to enjoy our similar taste in music and film. We have great discussions/debates too, he's what's called Asperger's Syndrome but is the smartest and most principled of my children.

Don't want to create a post if the idea won't float here, think there's a good chance i might cause myself grief if i do but wondering if anyone thinks a sort of film club thread might work? World Cinema with subs, is huge with my youngest son and me, we enjoy most genres from Bollywood to what on earth did we just watch?! Plenty of oddball stuff for us this weekend, watched these two films before but they're what we're in the mood for:

Heart of a Dog [1988] https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096126/

The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared [2013] https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2113681/

Please let me know if you think the idea might float, or sink without a trace.

Hi LLL!

Thanks always for your thoughtful posts. I'm glad this thread could give you a chuckle -- I love reading about other's daily life habits.

As for a film club or any thread idea, all you can do is try it and see! :)

Sometimes threads don't catch on not because they aren't good ideas, but sometimes there just isn't a current crowd here that are into the topic. But that can change with time and the variety of people who come here, which is why I often repeat thread ideas.

You never know what the current wave of participants might be into!

So I would say, go ahead, give it a try, and see what you get. If no one seems to participate, just tuck the idea away and try again at another time, if you should so wish.

Blessings to you and thank you for your uplifting posts! :)

Bless and hugs to you sweetheart and cheers for replying, think i've rattled a few cages here lately so maybe should hold off for a bit. i have quite a few WD Black and Gold 6 - 10 tb drive and a pretty vast range of nice quality film encodes.
Might be a good idea to pm a couple of people like you first, if i'm tempted to go for it.
