Not sure if you answered this, sorry I cannot find it, but how does a non-believer test their faith?

Paul said we are saved by grace through faith not works

James said if we claim we have faith but have no works our faith is dead. A living faith would work because we are created anew

Excellent points. James is not about "not really saved." There is more going on than most believe.

A believer can have no faith and have alot of works. There are three types of believers
I might be misunderstanding this post because James states that Works proves Faith which indicates he is talking about those who are 100% saved.
If they claim to have faith and do not (do not have eternal life) why does James not teach them why they really do not have spiritual salvation.
What is more consistent and logical is to see that James regards them as having received eternal life and but have not put that gift to use, and he is telling them that there are benefits for the soul to put one's faith to use.
The claim to spiritual saving faith is REAL, that is not the problem James is addressing at all!!
The problem is claiming faith but not putting faith to use (inoperative, separated aka dead faith) in the living outward what they possess inwardly.
This is the correct view and holds true how the word "dead" is used in scripture within that culture.
Making dead mean not real or only mental assent is not how the ancient people thought.
This is a great question because both ways to answer is correct.
If they have no works they are displaying where their faith is at but if they do have works it's really showing where their faith is at.
And from whether you follow Yeshua or Satan your works ultimately prove where your true faith is at.
It makes no sense that James would write to people "claiming faith" and yet he tells them to do works to prove their faith ....
if they only claim faith but it is not real, seems to me James would review the Gospel message in his letters, but he does not.
