I really like that there is a link to the original in the citation, BUT I think we can go one further, to help follow a conversation in a thread with many participants, and make it so you can just as quickly check the response given to the reply where a user's material is cited and linked to.

So,

User A says X.
User B cites X and responds Y.
User A then cites Y and responds Z.

The citations, right now, only link back in the conversation, but there are no links moving you forward in the conversation, so the conversation can be hard to follow when there are lots of participants.

If you get the membership, you can have a one on one conversation with someone. Never done it but I think you can have a group chat as well. You would have to ask someone who has a membership though.

Links to previous citations are available without a membership.

You can move forward by first going back, back, back by using the conversation links, and once
you get to the start of any given convo, you then use the "Back" button to move you forward
through the conversation, back to where you started. Ha, sounds a tad complicated, but it is not.

The platform would probably not allow for what you are suggesting. In fact what you are suggesting
would not necessarily make things easier to follow since any response to a post would likely come up,
and you would not get the flow of conversation you are looking for that way, either.

I was hoping to start at the beginning of a convo and follow it through, bypassing other comments (citations between two users).

Details would have to be worked out, but that isn't a deal breaker just a part of the process (if it can be done).

What I described makes that possible...

Just click on the number, then you should be able to press 1 for page 1 and it should send you there. That's what it does for my phone. Not sure if you are on a computer

I think he means if, like you enter a thread that is multiple pages long and there is one
particular conversation you want to follow, starting from the beginning, which could have
begun on any page, not necessarily from page one. Maybe it started on page ten and you
come across the convo on page thirty. Clicking back through the responses can take you
to the beginning of the exchange, if all the links are intact. Then to read the posts in order,
you would simply click the back button to return you page by page from where you began.

Yeah, but it defeats the entire purpose--I'm trying to get around having to trace the thread of the conversation with "forward linking", but you're saying "go ahead and trace the thread of the conversation".

The site is built on pre-existing software. The software has very limited options for customization, so chances of what you're suggesting being an option are not likely.

Since it can't be done any other way that I know of, there was nothing else to suggest.

I was just asking the people who run the site.
I'm not sure if you are part of the people running the site.

That aside, the answer may ultimately be "Sorry, we can't do it." Lol

You did not make it clear who you were asking. From what I understand,
the platform does not allow for changes like you are requesting.

And no, I have nothing to do with the running of this site...

Unless you count reporting very bad content, and trying to help people when I can.

I assumed this "suggestion" section would go to the people running the site?

I think this site had a format in the past that would include multiple quotes between
two people over a period of time, but if a lot of quotes were included, the quote boxes
got successively smaller and smaller until they almost disappeared over time, and it
did not necessarily make the conversation any easier to follow.

I can see how that could happen.

I remember those days. Oh what a cluttered mess!

Another downside is that one page would stretch 3 miles because so many posts had a recap of the whole conversation. You didn't just get the whole conversation in one post, you got the whole loooooooong conversation in 20 or 30 posts.
