I think so. I learned there were times you have to not only stand up for yourself but others. And I stood up more for others than I ever did for myself. I still try to do that today,stand for those who cant stand for themselves.

No, I grew a backbone long ago, and I can't abide people wanting to be protected by someone else when they won't stand up for themselves. If I had known what many in this country would turn into, I might have headed for Canada with some people I knew back in the 60's, instead of joining up.

I joined with some friends in third grade, and none of us was ever bullied again. By Middle School I had learned to fight, and have never worried about it since. When I learned that I also needed to be able to outsmart people in the work force, I learned that too.

We are crippling this young generation by what we are not teaching them.

Willie, simply because what YOU did in YOUR life worked for YOU does not mean that YOUR way is "right" and everything else is "wrong".

Ending bullying is something that has to begin at home. Fathers could very well shoulder the responsibility of nipping bullying in the bud (that was awkward to type), by noticing the signs if little Timmy shows the signs of being a bully, and it could be addressed at home. We both know it's not, and don't think that I somehow believe in some sort of campfire-and-sing-along world where everyone gets along. You're not the only man who's "been around and seen things".

If you're looking for me to tell you that "you're right Willie", it isn't going to happen. I think your hypothesis is flawed, and I think the way you solved your problem was barbaric and didn't actually solve anything. What is the old saying...an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind?
 
for me it's simple as this if teachers can't handle their job of keeping kids from fighting each other whether verbally or physically for no reason,then what is the point of kids going to school? they can't learn if their mind is focused on mischief or fear,and I'm not saying that kids won't try to do something even dumber like try to shoot somebody or make a bomb threat but if teachers are going to continue to have them come in to school to "learn" something,then they too must "learn" because it's about the same folly as bringing police and criminals under one roof and just assume that they'll get along otherwise, because as teachers should be aware kids already "learn" from their parents or influential people and "accept" quickly what they are told whether it be right or wrong "before" they step foot in school so you can't "assume" anything and if you don't know about kid behaviour let alone don't care about kids then it's ridiculous for you to be a teacher because you "know nothing" about kids so no kid will listen to you if you tell them to stop doing something wrong because you have to build a degree of authority with children because many children have it in their heads that if mom or dad don't tell them to do stop doing something bad then they won't which is as it should be as far as reserve for discipline of children but teachers still need to persist to get them to understand right and wrong at the same time as teaching, knowing that a child may or may not listen to what they say and as well as that there "are" consequences for any violent actions and that a teacher may have to do something about it whether it be phoning their parent or if "truely" necessary phoning the police but nothing is accomplished if you aren't vigilant at all times because teachers need to understand that "child neglect" "IS" a "CRIME" and they are "RESPONSIBLE" For "All" their students that do wrong and their students doing wrong can land "THEM" not the "students" in prison if they do "nothing" to keep such "evilness" from thriving.

I chose to quit carrying a pistol because I am sick of having to kill people. Way sick of it! But I still will not let myself or any of my family or friends be beaten by others if I can stop it by any means necessary.. I hope I will never stand by saying, "You really shouldn't do that."
 
I remember hearing in old neighborhoods of immigrants people would ban together to protect their neighborhoods. Over the years this protective unit began changing. The evolution of this group are what we now call gangs. Due to human sinful nature any group that forms to protect themselves and/or others from a threat eventually become corrupt and become a threat themselves. This includes government.

It's unfortunate that through this little exchange of ours, because we disagree, you have created an image in your mind about me and how I handle things based on what happened to me over 20 years ago. If you wish to believe that I sit idly by in every situation, then that is your choice. I'm under no obligation to justify myself to you or anyone else. I shared my personal experiences, and they were as they were. One life experience doesn't necessarily define an entire human lifetime, does it? You have your beliefs and I have mine, but don't minimize me as a person because I believe a certain way...don't minimize me to some opposite end of a spectrum from where you are. That's not fair to either of us.

I have been replying only to what you guys kept stating....... Just because something "shouldn't" happen or exist, really means nothing. It still does. It is a part of the world our kids will have to live in. And we are cheating and short-changing our children by telling them to expect someone else to come rescue them whenever life gets rough.
 
when I was little, kindergarten I think, I went to a school where EVERYONE picked on this one boy because he pooped his pants and the teachers looked the other way. One day I decided to stand up for this boy and I was thereafter also teased and bullied. I was bullied on the bus, in the classroom, in the hall, and on the playground. I received no help from teachers and I felt I couldn't talk to my mom or stepfather about it. I heard it all, "Fight back" "get help from an adult" "stop defending him".
I don't think that there is any one solution to bullying. I think sometimes adults SHOULD be involved and sometimes if it's possible the kids SHOULD fight back. In my case I should have gotten past my fears and told my mom everything that was going on in my life because I was in a dark place for a 5-6 yr old.

A lot of times schools fail to protect kids and are ineffective at handling bullying and the only option the child has is to fight back but only to be punished regardless whether it was self defense or not. School policy has changed a lot. These victims end up getting suspended or expelled. It's outrageous but it's reality.
School is no longer what it used to be but it's a business with a lot of politics and sadley parents are blind to this and kids pay the biggest price.

It's not about rescuing these kids but teaching them to be decent human beings in a very messed up world. Some of these kids are victims of their own circumstances. They can't choose their parents, a lot of times the parents are to blame.

I work with these kids everyday and sometimes the safest place where they feel loved is when they are at school because home is chaotic. I care about my students well being and what the future holds for them whether a bully or victim I don't want to see them hurt each other but instead stand together and support one another. We are on the same team. Kids deal with so much today bullying shouldn't be one of them.

Remember these bullies will eventually become abusers. Abusing their wife and kids which will become a community problem. Let's break the cycle of violence for the next generation.

You know there was a day in age that if a kid was misbehaving an adult could discipline them,any adult. It didn't have to be their parents.Try that now and see what happens.We spoil a generation and then look for answers as to what the problem is. smh

Disciplining a child is ultimately the parents responsibility and parents should be held accountable when their child misbehave. A child only does what they are allowed to get away with. If a child knows better they do better.

I don't think it's just about a spoiled generation but a break down in the family unit. Single parents are the norm, divorce is at an all time high, absentee parents, and you have grandparents raising grandkids when they already raised their.
 
Dear kim 12345, Sorry that you are going through this, but you did the right thing and if it doesn't get addressed you do need to escalate it. It is sad to see this happening in so many schools, but TA's and those teacher that will stand up need to do that. It is so important to stand up for what is right.

This is really quite silly. Kids are in high School (which this thread is about) hardly 35 hours a week. What is this nonsense that we get to blame teachers for bullying in their lives, when they hardly even see them 7 hours a day?
 
When i was in high school we didn't really have individual bullies, but we did have gangs, and most of the time when a bully would try something they would get jumped...I remember this one time this kid was trying to bully this little Lao kid, and after class there were about 15 Hmongs outside stomping the bully out until the security guards came...Moral of the story be good to people..
 
public schools are turning into a joke. our government is deliberately destroying our schools so they can turn education into a "for-prophet" business like everything else.

I wouldn't argue with that, one bit. But, handling bullies is to be taught by parents, not foisted off onto teachers to deal with. As I said before, most bullying does not happen at school, nor even during school hours.
 
Another problem is that kids are being taught "this will never happen to them, so why should they learn to deal with it" to many things like bullying. The amount of people who laugh at the idea of learning to fight, because they don't think that they will ever have to deal with situations where they will need to fight, and it applies to other areas too. Then the people find themselves in that situation and they are stuck, not knowing what to do.

And there is SO much focus on "rules" and "School's policy to not tolerate bullying" when in reality they won't care, as long as results are high. SO many try to hide behind the rules instead of confronting the situation, handling the problem and dealing with it. But it's just our society today, it's gone down the toilet.
