My eyes sting most of the time. I feel like there is something in them, but the doctor found nothing. She gave me an ointment to relieve the irritation, but it doesn't help much. Please pray that God will provide permanent relief.

Hi Billy,

Is most of the stinging due to dryness?

I've have extremely dry eyes for at least 15 years and use an ointment at night. During the day, my doctors recommended these preservative-free drops:

This is the exact type I use. I've tried other brands but they don't work for me. Even this company has an "Advanced" formulation but I like this "Refresh Plus" kind the best. You might find that something different works for you. (Store brands are cheaper but I didn't find them to be effective at all.)

It has to be in the individual vials, and not bottles (for me at least.) The vials are designed to last only 24 hours because they don't contain preservatives. Usual bottled eye drops have preservatives that can cause further irritation -- bottled drops always make my eyes feel worse after a few uses.

They have some bottled versions now that claim to be "preservative free" but unfortunately, they still don't work for me -- only the ones in the individual vials seem to help, and unlike other drops, you can use them as much as needed. Most other formulas have a limit of a few times a day.

The box says to apply a couple drops to each eye and then throw the vial away, but I keep the vial for the 24 hours and use it all up, because there's enough for several applications. I carry them everywhere and have stashes in every room and bag I carry.

The one thing they don't help with is redness, unless the redness is just from dryness and the drops are enough to soothe it away.

Unfortunately, they're expensive. The best deal I've found is at Costco -- they have a larger box than at any other place I've looked, and for a better price. About every other month, they also usually have a deal for $4 off per box. The next cheapest place I've found them is Walmart.

I have prayed for your eyes and hope that this may also be of help. :)

God bless.

People who sweat alot should wash their foreheads frequently. Sometimes the salt I sweat out runs down into my eyes and burns my eyes. Don't know if this will help you.

There are might be adjustments to your diet that might help.

I find that too much coffee (caffeine,) salt, and sugar -- things that contribute to dehydration -- all make my eyes feel drier, kind of like sand paper.

I also use a lot less drops in hot, humid weather than in dry or cold climates. Keeping a warmer temperature and running a humidifier might help too.
