I don't expect this will work, but I've been posting (sometimes long, carefully considered) input only to be told I need to wait, or " I need to post something which has "less than 10,000 characters"!!
My posts are not THAT long.
Can anyone help?

Allow me to clear up your confusion.

First, every sub-forum is clearly described as to the type of thread that belongs in it thus this thread belongs here, not in the "New Users" forum where you posted it.

Second, (as has been explained to you before) all new threads are subject to a screening process in which case every new thread posted (other than those posted by a few long term users) has to "wait" before it goes public.

Third, just because you don't think that something you have posted has 10,000 characters doesn't mean that it doesn't. Every space, punctuation mark, etc. goes to that count.

Fourth, posting threads that have a single character as a title and a single character as the post body do nothing but hold up the screening process for legitimate threads and annoy the persons screening new threads since they are not going to be made public.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I think that when you "quote" someone or hit the "reply" button, then the number of characters in the "quote" count towards your 10,000 character limit.

HTML code counts toward your character count also, and that is hidden (made visible when you
use the Toggle BB code icon on the far right above message box), though you can make it visible
and use an online character counter to help you determine the length of any contribution before
posting it and discovering it is too long...

I hope THIS works!
Thanks for replying
I'll try to understand and respond.
First - I didn't expect my "Posting problems" post to transmit.
Second - I'm a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to technology. Perhaps I missed even something obvious to someonewho's use to a system.
I'll carry on in a bit.

Maybe readers/ responders could take any mistakes I make into account when responding.
As for where I've posted - at the time, after many really frustrating tries, I was prepared to try ANYWHERE to get my message through, however un-"clearly defined" it was.
As for your third point - I'm afraid I'm still confused. Are you saying that MY punctuation is likely to push my count into 10,000 characters? - or, as someone has suggested - Is my input added to previous material that I'm quoting?
As to your fourth - as I was having so little success in posting, a few characters rather than yet another lengly response seemed in order.
I don't know the process you use to screen and vet posts - it may be more troublesome than I realise, 'though I don't see how handling one or two letters (characters) could be problematic or very "annoying".

PS - Although I phrased some of my response as question(s), I'm not expecting a response unless you'd like to make one. The crux of this is whether the situation's been resolved, which it apparently has.

Just break your novel up into several posts. You could call them "chapters". :giggle:

Thanks for your suggestion.
I don't know if I'm missing your point, but I don't see how it would help, as I don't see how lessening my input in a given post would help to alleviate this problem, as neither my short or long posts exceed 10,000 characters.

.You might just need to not "quote" the other person at all in your response or to just partially "quote" them to bring your character count down.

Unless I'm hallucinating, I have had times when I've gotten the error message that I had exceeded the allotted 10,000 character limit, but I was able to alleviate that problem by shortening my "quote" of whoever I was responding/replying to.

In other words, unless I'm mistaken (and I might be), it's not just the character count of your input, but also the character count of whatever you "quote" from somebody else.

There are over 5,000 characters in the above, yet only 438 words are detected, plus 437 spaces, with 3,982 letters.

All the links and color codes have hidden HTML and are included in the count total.

I used this online character counter:

Online Character Counter - Displays character count of text!

Thanks for that - I'll bear that in mind for future (if any!) future posts (look what I've done to your text!). It's somehow reassuring to hear I'm not the only one this has happened to.

Thanks for your input. Now we're on the subject of places, may I ask - where in the World are you?

Sure, I'm in the 'hot' (in every sense) state of CA. Tons of large fires this year prompting a lot of people to relocate. The UK looks very refreshing right now🌧⛈☂

I guess in that sense, it is.
California seems to be thought of as a "utopia" by some, but it does have its negative side, with natural problems, such as the San Andreas fault.
Specifically, I'm from Wales, UK.
