I think asking too many questions about Pentecostalism touches a nerve since that denomination is often the subject of ridicule and attack. There are a number of Pentecostal people here undoubtedly watching this thread.
People want to take inventory of you first, gather information, find weak links in your defense, so they are able to attack you more efficiently if you say anything disrespectful about Pentecostals.
Rarely are there any innocent and good faith discussions in the Bible Discussion Forum. People have developed a hair trigger finger. It’s more like people want to preemptively prepare for ad hominems and debates, as you’ve already noticed I’m sure.
and I’m sorry to hear that. I am always open for a casual and truthful discussion about the Pentecostal movement.
I consider myself lucky to have learned under Jack Hayford (since retired) at what I call a "2 Corinthians 14" Charismatic church. They taught that the gifts are still in play today but under strict Biblical guidelines. It's not the free-for-all that many churches in that genre employ.

Yes I see this forum is filled with vitriol. I hope that I never get swept up in it.
Pentecostal catches a lot of flack alright. So does Lutherans. We get equated to rome quite a lot. The irony is that those who do, use Romanist terms to do so. Its a real head scratcher really.
I understand. I’ve had my fair share of attacks too. It just bounces right off of me at this point.
As far as I understand about Pentecostals, they are not necessarily unified under a core doctrine. Some of them might believe you need to speak in tongues for evidence of being saved, while others may think it’s not necessary to be saved, but that the gift of tongues should be sought. I think the general culture within the Pentecostal church is that if you aren’t speaking in tongues then you’re a bit of an outsider in a social sense. Churches have cliques and in-crowds.
I’ve met a fair amount of Pentecostals who seem to think speaking in tongues is just babbling random syllables in quick succession like an auctioneer. I am not sure if that’s representative of the whole, just my experience.
One particular point I do agree with them on is that the gifts of the Holy Spirit haven’t ended. I also believe the offices of the church are still in effect per Ephesians 4:11-13, but I don’t think all Penetcostals agree with that.
I don’t neatly fit into any church or denomination I’ve found so far, but i identify as non-denominational and think that the various churches all offer something valuable that the others could benefit from.
And having said all of that, I don’t think there is a single person who represents what the Pentecostal church is all about. They have sects within the denomination.
one thing is for certain according 1 Corinthians Chapter 2, we are to speak the mysteries of God. and since the Bible itself has been revealed, it's not a mystery to anyone filled with the Holy Spirit. so that leaves then how do we go about speaking the Mysteries of God?
thankfully, the same writer in 1 Corinthians Chapter 2 also wrote Chapter 14. and Paul explains the only way to speak the Mysteries of God is through Speaking in Tongues.

There are no offices listed in Ephesians 4:11-13:
"And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;"
No mention of office.
I would recommend a Lutheran LCMS church for you to visit, but I recommend you speak to the pastor first because we are very different in our service than what many folks are used to, and it can be hard to follow.
Let me know if you decide to visit one. I will do what ever I can to help out. Even help you find one to visit. I'll even call the pastor and talk to him.
Okay I’ll research them a bit. I live in Hanoi, Viet Nam for now. Think there’s one here? I haven’t did a lot of church hunting mainly because it’s a bit difficult to do so here. Maybe you’ll have better luck finding one than me. I reached out to one and haven’t heard anything back yet. That was over a month ago I think.
I called them offices because that seemed like a convenient title, but you’re right. What are they called, shall we call them parts of the body of Christ? Or positions in the church?
This isn't true.
First, the "mystery" he's talking about in 1 Corinthians 2:7 is the message of the cross. Second, he's talking about the message he himself preached to them. It doesn't say anything whatsoever about us needing to speak "mysteries." Third, it has nothing whatsoever to do with tongues.
