there's a lot i could say about this (i mean, have you met me?
big talker
).
i'll simply say i believe it imprudent for us to try to separate our High Priest's work of mediation (as the advocate in v. 1) and propitiation. in Jn 17 the Lord says He's praying for believers, not for the world. does He satisfy the wrath of God for people He won't even pray for?
The point is the propitiation is the atonement the atonement he made is what propitiates the wrath of God those terms work together. When Jesus died for sinners it was to save all sinners it wasn’t for any group who had done right it was for sinners without any respect of any particular people or person save Jesus Christ the Lord , whether a Jew or a gentile
“
Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine:
the soul that sinneth, it shall die.”
Ezekiel 18:4 KJV
“
The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men,
To see if there were any that did understand, And seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: There is none that doeth good, no, not one.”
Psalm 14:2-3 KJV
“for
all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
Romans 3:23 KJV
Everyone is guilty the first time we do anything not holt and upright in any manner or form we fall short we are proven to be a sinner and therefore we are under a sentance of death not only the body but “the living soul that sins it shall die says the lord “
So mankind is lost then correct ? What if there was a perfect and holy man without sin and therefore without death eho ales yes obeyed Gods word even though it led him to a cross of suffering and death on behalf of all those who had sinned and we’re sentenced now to death ?
what if God decided to provide a substitute an atonement to take sinful mankinds place in death becoming flesh and blood being born a son of man and dying in man’s place not for his sins because he did not ever sin but thier sins
you see the atonement is Jesus act of sting for our sins and being raised up for our justification
the propitiation is that he willingly knowingly did this for us laid down his own earthly life to save the eternal lives of the souls of sinners condemned to die already needing desperately salvation . This action of love was the propitiation u to God be act of obedience going to the cross for others enduring the shame and scorn and torture and death sin brought upon man , but doing this to save thier souls perfect love is the propitiation before God
“Therefore doth my Father love me,
because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.”
John 10:17-18 KJV
“This is my commandment, That ye love one another,
as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.”
John 15:12-14
jesus life of sacrificial love is what propitiates his wrath for us who believe but again others can also be saved from that impending wrath to come if they hear the gospel and believe like we did
“
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but
is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
2 Peter 3:9 KJV
“And
this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and
then shall the end come.”
Matthew 24:14 KJV
“And he said unto them,
Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved;
but he that
believeth not shall be damned.”
Mark 16:15-16 KJV
“and said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things. And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.”
Luke 24:46-49 KJV
“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and
ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.”
Acts 1:8-9
Do you notice in the how everyone is deemed a sinner in tbe ot because of sin and the laws declarations of death for sin ? but then God promises a New Testament tbat will remit sin and renew the people who repent and believe the messiah when he comes ?
and then the gospel comes and fulfills this and we learn how he was going to wash away sin and renew the people and give them a new spirit and heart and mind
the atonement is one aspect of Jesus dying the propitiation is another aspect of the same thing it all really just works together to become plain and simple and clear
just as clear and simple as mark chapter 16 go preach the gospel to everyone some will believe and be saved others won’t they’ll reject it for some various reason and be damned
jesus is the atonement and he is the propitiation just two different perspectives one appeases Gods anger and wrath against mankind the outher is a substitute fornthier death sentance like the sin sacrifice and scapegoat example in tbe law of Moses
the law of Moses is where we learn what those terms mean like atonement and why they are always talking about the bloodshed of Christ because of the example and who die in the law and what it reveals of blood of atonement
“For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.”
Leviticus 17:11 KJV
That’s why Jesus died to
atone for the souls of sinners who were condemned by sin to death.
thw fact that he willingly did it in I evidence to Gods Will of salvstion for mankind is the propitiation in Gods eyes the love in truth of God and also mankind who he calls his brethren
