John,
Did you ever happen to make it to Zakopane, Poland (close to border with Slovakia, I believe)? My grandfather's family is from that area, and I have it on my bucket list. I've seen YT videos showing it, and it looks so nice. Nice to meet you.
No,
We just took that main highway from the airport in Austria to
Banská Bystrica
Right through the middle of Slovakia to the heart. (It is a thin nation....not far to anywhere) I think that highway somewhat follows the Danube.
It was an eye opening experience. The way people lived day to day life was unique. If I could learn to speak Slovak I would immigrate there if possible. The local food was insanely good. (The residents were bored with it) I loved how people took excess fruit from their gardens to the distiller to have the fruit turned into liquors. The meat farmers turned their livestock into sausages....and even the wheat for the bread was all grown locally too.
In the meantime we were treated to garden raised vegetables for meals regularly. And EVERYONE knew who we were and what we did on a daily basis. Even in this city of some size.
However, I have responsibilities here in the US. I can't get out even if I wanted to. I'm updating my passport so I can at least leave again one day for trips.
To me, the Slovaks are an extremely kind and generous people. They do not have much money...nor do they understand what valuables they have that cannot be purchased by any amount of money.
Of course they have some local Caste prejudices. Doing work that former prisoners do (community service projects) is thought to be demeaning...even to children. Russian immigrants are viewed with lifelong suspicion. And NEVER have anything to do with the Roma....you can recognize them by their tattoos.
All in all it was a wonderful place, good friends, good beer, and lovely people. Almost like a cartoon village come to life....
Even the City Square was something else with a history surrounding every craftsman that built it.
