76 year old male that has rounded third and headed for home. Searched for over 40 years for answers to why people believe what they believe and the search continues. Thousands of questions but will begin with three.
#1. If God forgives sins when we confess, just exactly what is the disadvantage of sinning?
#2. I can't find anywhere in the Bible of any of the great men and women saying, "I got saved today!" Not even the Apostle Paul. Saved from what?
#3. Why do we call Him "Jesus" when the letter "J" was not a part of the alphabet when He was born? Google the Original 1611 KJV, the Hebrew, and Aramaic writings. Bottom line: Does it matter what we call Him as long as we know who He is and what He's done for us and His promises for our eternity?

Reason for my questions: my math is average but I've found that in the Gospels, Jesus was asked about 183 questions of which he gave definitive answers to only 3. He, Himself, asked about 307 questions. I too believe questions enlist people to think about why they believe what they believe.

Welcome and so glad to have you joining the fellowship here at CC! Those are great questions and if you post them in the Bible Discussion Forum (BDF) you will get many answers. I'll take the first one. The disadvantage of sinning is that it is a waste of valuable time that we instead should be sharing the Gospel and building up our faith. Beside when we ask for forgiveness we need to repent. True God's mercies are new every day but God also knows our hearts so we need to respect His goodness.

The disadvantage of sinning is you are violating God's principles, put in place to protect you and others from harm, pain, and suffering. If one can really do things that hurt others without experiencing pangs of conscience or sense of wrong-doing, free of an attendant desire to do and be better, I would fear for any in their sphere of influence. We might call such a person a psychopath, or a sociopath. They are truly dangerous, and best avoided. It is not just a matter of confessing, but of repenting also.

We are saved from God's wrath. That is the short answer. The longer answer is that people know God exists, but due to their pride, refuse Him entry into their lives. Yet they have no excuse, and on the day of judgment at the end of this age, will be condemned under the law, and suffer the second death. Jesus saves. By unmerited grace through faith in His shed righteous blood for the remission of sins, those who believe in Him escape the second death and attain to life ever after. And really, why should God allow into His house and/or extend more life to those who refuse to acknowledge His existence and credit Him for giving them life in the first place?

Yes, and this is what was revealed. Unless I hear the Voice of God in my current troubles, words written thousands of years ago won't help me today. Too many people today believe in Bibliolatry and have elevated the Bible to the fourth level of the Trinity. They won't walk down the hall without a Bible under their arm. My support of this: John 5:39-40. My personal belief, and I may be wrong, is that the Bible is a book of words and words by themselves have no meaning. People give meaning to words so the Bible says what people say it says. Therefore, division, different religions, hate for those that don't worship the way we do, etc. Getting on my knees before God showed me it's all about a relationship with the Creator. The Bible, to me, is a library and not a book. It was written for me but not to me. Forgive me if this is offensive.

I can't find any statement by Paul about being saved today. My view is Paul was pursuing salvation everyday but he had not yet attained that goal and wouldn't until the last day. Does this challenge the "Permanence of Salvation" movement? Give me your thoughts here, please.

Have you read the epistles by John? He said he wrote certain things so that people who believe
in the name of the Son of God may know (present tense) that they have eternal life. One cannot
be in possession of eternal life unless one is saved. Although not written to your specifications,
it amounts to the same thing. Line by line and precept by precept...

I'm in total agreement that we speak English and not trying to generate frustration but the thought comes to mind that when we pronounce the Latin name Jesus for our named friends south of us, we use their dialect of Hay-sus. Interesting.

They do not speak Latin but Spanish.

In modern languages, there are differences in the pronunciation of Jesus. In English, the name is pronounced with a hard “J,” while in Spanish, even though the spelling is the same, the name is pronounced with what would be an “H” in English.

It is precisely this type of transliteration that has evolved “Yeshua” into the modern “Jesus.” source

I'm in perfect agreement with your wisdom about John, however, my concern is about "may" instead of "will". But the challenge remains that I can't find anywhere in the Bible where any of the great men and women stated, "I got saved today." Please help me out here. Thank you for your response.

You will have the same problem in regard to many issues, one of which some
like to bandy about because Jesus never said the exact words "I am God." And
yet is is made plain for those with eyes to see and ears to hear. In regards to
"You may know..." Yes, I do see your point. You may but you may not. Some
people are like that with their faith. Never quite sure. They are sadly blown
about and question their salvation at every juncture, turn, and challenge.

Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood
the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who
love Him. James 1:1-2 I suppose it comes down to whether or not we believe
God's promises, how we understand what has been given us in Scripture,
and what we believe God's character to be. And what we believe about Jesus.
