Nerd thread. (Video games and anti-social behavior)

Before the singles forum turns into match.com, I figure an effort needs to be made to counter act this direction.

I know there are millions of gamers out there, there has to be a few in here.

Right now, I like playing Team Fortress 2. It's one of the first games that are made to be a cartoon that I really like. Tons of humor in it and the game play has unlimited strategies in it. So, it's basically flawless in it's attempts of being played again.

People long been trying to use this site as a dating site. That's nothing new. And lately that's not been much of an issue.

I'm not a gamer, I'm not good enough at games to be that invested. But I do like to play some as I have nothing but time to kill.

Currently I'm back to World of Warcraft. I started playing 15 years ago, and played consistently for years. Since then I've played in spurts as i have no friends there and get bored.
I was playing Borderlands 3 until they released the xpac based on the wedding of two male characters.
I was playing Mass Effect Andromeda until their save feature caused me to lose Hours and Hours of play time. Probably over 30 hours of game time ddisappeared. About 1/3 of all my time playing.
I tried Batman Arkham City, or something like that. I played for an hour and haven't touched it since. Hated it.
I'm currently rather at a loss at what to play now. With my limited interest in gaming, being unwilling to pay the ridiculous price of new games and only having an Omen gaming laptop my ability to find anything interesting and that I can run is tricky. Which is why I'm back to solo WoW.

What engages you the most about the World of Warcraft?

WoW used to be huge. And it used to be true people sold accounts (which wasn't allowed). Not so common anymore. During its peak it had 15 million subscribers, now it's below 2 million. Still quite popular though.
At the time I started playing it was new and unlike any game I'd seen before. The size of the maps showed how huge it was. There was so much to do and learn. The fantasy aspect made it very immersive. And the ability to play with others and see others talking and interacting was insane to me at the time.
But the first few years I played I made friends and I was also homeless. So it helped me to kill my days sitting in the library, rather than my car, bored. And to interact with other people. So I think now much of it is convenience and nostalgia. And sometimes seeing the social side of it helps moments of loneliness (even though I'm not talking, its like leaving the TV on in the background).
Now the people are less friendly, the game is less about the immersion into this fantasy world and more about armor stats and reputation grinding.

Despite WoW being an online game, playing Against other people is rarely a requirement for anything. Playing against other players is not something I care to do. I'm quite bad at gaming and lack the hand/eye coordination and speed and reflexes to do well. I played Fortnite and it was pure stress, anxiety and frustration. Even PVP in WoW was the same. Me losing constantly and being stressed out because I can't keep up.

Being on a laptop my biggest problem with being able to play newer games is my processor. It's an Intel i7 2.2 gig. Memory is fine and apparently my video card is often over powered haha.

back when this was new, it competed with return to castle wolfenstein -- both are free to download/play multiplayer fps team-based arena games with a variety of character classes, that had a vibrant international community of modders and makeshift leagues.

i used to play a lot of RTCW, but i never got into TF2. i guess being already 'invested' in one and didn't have a reason to pick up the other.

Play for the interactions, rather than mindless violence. That's an interesting concept.

What's funny about TF2 is that, when someone dies, you see springs, kitchen sinks, or alarm clocks as guts. It's hilarious, it's really a PG, not really graphic at all. The jokes all around the game play is fun also. Each character has it's on personality and stereo typical auto replies.

O.k. TF2 isn't for you, but I'm glad you found a connection online when you were homeless? That must of been horrible. How long were you homeless? What happened?

I tried Batman Arkham City, or something like that. I played for an hour and haven't touched it since. Hated it.

i liked all the other batman games, but the last one i only played for an hour or maybe 2 and lost all interest. really didn't like the car being added to the game at all and did not want to go on and explore how many other ways it could disappoint me.

i've been finishing the outer worlds atm, over the weekends.

I play for the story, so I'm in a whole different world. Star Wars: KOTOR, Deus Ex, Saboteur, and a few small games like Dust: An Elysian Tale, all because they have a good story.


Subhumanoidal if you want some good recommendations for games with great stories and pretty good gameplay, lemme know. You can get stuff dirt cheap by putting it on your gog.com wishlist and grabbing it when it goes on sale.

hax didn't really get me out of playing it directly, but it isolated me at first and then because it had driven so many people away i exhausted all the other entertainment i could get out of it and had no incentive left to continue -- there got to be a lot less people playing because of how rampant abuse was on so many servers, and i had gotten to be a much better than average player, so even when there weren't actual cheaters on i got accused of it a lot, and people relatively new to the game didn't want to play with me because of the experience difference. even if you get skilled enough or sneaky enough to *sort of* be able to compete against people aimbotting, there's only so much of that anyone can stand to put in the effort to do ((lol they don't generally want to play against anyone who in any way threatens their invincibility either)), and the core gameplay just ceased to be fun.

i still really enjoyed the game itself - so i learned and practiced trickjumping and glitching and fighting hordes of bots all alone; the sorts of things you can entertain yourself with on mostly empty or empty servers. i was a leader in a few clans and ran a few servers, and got deep into writing player scripts, coding bots and dabbled in map-making.
eventually i'd kind of played it all out. if there had still been a lot of active servers i might have kept playing, and modding, and scripting, but as it was it all started seeming pointless, and i moved on.

I can share you joy of the game. Played it exclusively pretty much from 2005-2014, except for maybe Battlefield, Madden, and Mario Kart. Had a blast with the Wii. What servers did you normally play on? What was your favorite class? Give me panzer/solider all day.

Also, bought the Wolfenstein 2009 (think that was the one) that came packaged with online play, but it was horrible (Online part of it). Bought the Orange Box, which included Portal, Half Life 2, and Team Fortress 2. The rest was history. Really wish they would start dumbing down Madden, it's to complicated. Also, eliminate glitch plays.

My uncle got the cheat codes to the game age of empires on pc and it’s so addicting how to keep everyone alive lol their life spans were funny now
