Come and worship, come and worship, Worship Christ, the newborn King!

God with man is now residing, Yonder shines the infant Light:
Come and worship, come and worship, Worship Christ, the newborn King!

Secular music isnt that bad, i believe as long as we can handle it without going off the rails. why not. I do listen to gospel alot though. I believe that we should feed the spirit not just the flesh with acceptable practices.

Yes, and I think we handle secular music when we draw the line where the lyrics/message becomes anti-Christian.
The example I cite is when my conscience no longer let me listen to Rod Stewart's "Tonight's the Night".
Do you have a song lyric you would like to share as an example of feeding the spirit?

I came by your invitation @GWH but I'm not sure what good I will be. I did listen to a documentary on Silent Night and when it was first written it was considered a secular song and they wouldn't sing it in the church! Can you imagine that!?

No I can't.
Who considered it to be secular?
Who wouldn't sing it in what church?

1 Silent night, holy night, All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child! Holy Infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace.

2 Silent night, holy night, Darkness flies, all is light;
Shepherds hear the angels sing, "Alleluia! hail the King!
Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born."

3 Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

4 Silent night, holy night, Wondrous star, lend thy light;
With the angels let us sing Alleluia to our King;
Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born.

What's not to be sung by Christians in a church?!

[Depart in peace! Merry Christmas!]

I heard the bells on Christmas day
Their old familiar carols play
And mild and sweet their songs repeat
Of peace on Earth, good will to men

And the bells are ringing (peace on Earth)
Like a choir they're singing (peace on Earth)
In my heart I hear them (peace on Earth)
Peace on Earth, good will to men

And in despair I bowed my head
"There is no peace on Earth, " I said
For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on Earth, good will to men

But the bells are ringing (peace on Earth)
Like a choir singing (peace on Earth)
Does anybody hear them? (Peace on Earth)
Peace on Earth, good will to men

Then rang the bells more loud and deep
God is not dead, nor doth He sleep
(Peace on Earth) (Peace on Earth)
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on Earth, good will to men

Then ringing, singing on its way
The world revolved from night to day
A voice, a chime, a chant sublime
Of peace on Earth, good will to men

And the bells, they're ringing (peace on Earth)
Like a choir they're singing (peace on Earth)
And with our hearts, we'll hear them (peace on Earth)
Peace on Earth, good will to men

Do you hear the bells, they're ringing? (Peace on Earth)
The light, the angels singing (peace on Earth)
Open up your heart and hear them (peace on Earth)
Peace on Earth, good will to men
Peace on Earth, Peace on Earth
Peace on Earth, good will to men!

[song by Casting Crowns]

After Christmas comes Easter and the dawn of the New Covenant/Gospel, of which the beginning of a new year may be a reminder,
so let us consider the song re the Magi (Matt. 2:1-12) in a new light:

“We Three Kings of Orient Are”

1. We three kings of orient are; bearing gifts, we traverse afar,
Field and fountain, moor and mountain, Following yonder star.

(Chorus) O star of wonder, star of night, Star with royal beauty bright,
Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to thy perfect Light.

2. Born a king on Bethlehem’s plain, Gold I bring to crown him again,
King forever, ceasing never, Over us all to reign. (Chorus)

3. Frankincense to offer have I; Incense owns a Deity nigh;
Prayer and praising, all men raising, Worship him, God on high. (Chorus)

4. Myrrh is mine: its bitter perfume Breathes a life of gathering gloom:
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, Sealed in the stone-cold tomb. (Chorus)

Redemption Draweth Nigh (Luke 21:28)

[*] A4 A7 D A6 A7 D A7 D
1. Years of time have come and gone since I first heard it told—
A7 b D7 G e7 D A
How Jesus would come again some day.
A6 A D G A7 D
If back then it seemed so real, then I just can’t help but feel
A7 b G D A7 D G D
How much closer His coming is today.

G D
(Chorus:) Signs of the times are everywhere,
A7 b D7 G g D A
And there’s a brand new feeling in the air;
A6 A D A7 D [G
Keep your eyes upon the eastern sky,
F#7 b G D A7 D]* G D (etc.)
Lift up your head, redemption draweth nigh.

2. Wars and strife on every hand, and violence fills our land.
Still some people doubt He’ll come again.
But the word of God is true; He’ll redeem His chosen few.
Don’t lose hope, soon Christ Jesus will descend.

(Chorus, then repeat last line)

I find hints of evaluating the past year (judgment) and looking forward to a new one (new Jerusalem) in the following medley:

Medley on the Coming Day

1. Well early in the morning, about the break of day,
I asked the Lord to help me find the way.
Help me find the way, to the promised land
This lonely body, needs a helping hand.
I asked the Lord, “Won’t you help me please, find the way?"

2. When the judgment comes to find the world in shame,
When the trumpet blows, won’t you call my name.
When the thunder rolls, and the heavens rain,
When the sun turns black to never shine again,
When the trumpet blows, won’t you call me please, call my name.

(Refrain:) Everybody gonna pray on the very last day.
O when they hear that bell ring the world away,
Everybody gonna pray to the Lord on the judgment day.

1. Well you can sing about the great king David,
And you can preach about the wisdom of Paul,
But the judgment falls on all mankind when the trumpet sounds the call.
All equal and the same when the Lord, He calls your name,
Get ready, brother, for that day--- (Refrain)

2. Well one day soon all men will stand,
His word will be heeded in all the land.
Men shall know and men shall see we all are brothers and we all are free.
Each brother take His hand, heed the meaning of the Lord’s command.
Get ready, brother, for that day--- (Refrain, repeat last line)

1. I know that one day soon a song shall rise,
You’ll hear it with the sleep still in your eyes,
You’ll wake unto a brand new day,
//And you’ll hear a bell ringing, voices singing, far----- away.//

A time when every man will be as one,
A time to reach right out and touch the sun, come the day.

2. With freedom still a thought within your mind,
A sleeping thing that some may never find,
It may be still a million miles away,
//And you’ll hear a bell ringing, voices singing, far----- away.//

A time to live without doubt or fear,
Welcome to the happy world that will be here, come the day.
//And you’ll hear a bell ringing, voices singing, far----- away.//

Still new-born in another new year!

New-Born Again

1. I’ve found free grace and dyin’ love; I’m new-born again;
been long time a-talkin’ ‘bout my trials here below.

(Refrain) Free grace, free grace, free grace, sinner;
Free grace, free grace, I’m new-born a-gain.
So glad, so glad, I’m new-born again,
Been long time a-talkin’ ‘bout my trials here below.

2. I know my Lord has set us free, we’re . . .

(Refrain) Free grace, free grace, free grace, sinner;
Free grace, free grace, We're new-born a-gain.
So glad, so glad, we're new-born again,
Been long time a-talkin’ ‘bout our trials here below.

3. So let us sing and praise the Lord, we’re . . .
(refrain)

4. Oh won’t you come and join our song, we’re . . .
(refrain)

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! :love:

A song about last year, this year, and future years:

Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

1. Yesterday He died for me, yesterday, yesterday;
Yesterday He died for me, yesterday; yesterday He died for me,
died for me. This is history.

2. Today He lives for me, today, today;
Today He lives for me, today; today He lives for me,
lives for me. This is victory.

3. Tomorrow He comes for me, He comes, He comes;
Tomorrow He comes for me, He comes; tomorrow He comes for me,
comes for me. This is mystery.

4. O friend, do you know Him, know Him, know Him;
O friend, do you know Him, know Him; O friend do you know Him,
you know Him, //Jesus Christ the Lord,// (Repeat // twice)
