The word “epistle” is from the Greek word “epistolē” and is a derivative of “to send a message” (to “epi” send “sellein”) of which the roots are based in the Indo-European language so it shouldn’t surprise us that the letters sent from the Apostles are called “epistles,” in most translations.

Was it usury? The wealthy Israelites were oppressing their poor brethren and taking advantage of them.

Nehemiah reprimands then for doing this.
Yes, he became angry and...

And likewise I, my brothers and my servants are lending them money and grain. Please, let us leave off this usury.
Nehemiah 5:10 NASB

Moreover, I and my brothers and my servants are lending them money and grain. Let us abandon this exacting of interest.
Nehemiah 5:10 ESV

Today, I learned more about Nehemiah's story and the wall than I ever knew before. Thanks again for this thread. More importantly thank You Lord!!!

But the former governors who were before me laid burdens on the people and took from them bread and wine besides forty shekels of silver; even their servants domineered the people. But I did not do so because of the fear of God.

This is also referred to interest on a loan like a mortgage or car payment. A very common practice today.

No takers on the Usury question. Was it altogether banned? No, just banned for the poor and our brethren.

Exo. 22:25 "If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury."

Deut. 23:20
"Unto a stranger thou mayest lend upon usury; but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon usury: that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all that thou settest thine hand to in the land whither thou goest to possess it." :);)

John 5:8, 9 "Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath." ;):)
"The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him."

Astonishingly, this man turned informant against Jesus to His persecutors....quite possible a case of healing without salvation, though no one is certain of this possibility.

Nathan is passing a curse onto David for having Uriah killed and prophesies this:

2 Sam. 12:11, 12 "Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun. For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun."

Question: Who was it of David's house that slept with his wives?

Absalom is my guess. ;)(y)
