Obviously I'm talking about the words/labels, when discussing the Bible, not persons. The words "sodomy" and "sodomite" were coined about the 13th century by the church of Rome; and "homosexual" and "homosexuality" created in Germany in the 19th century, coming into English around 1900. We are living in a day when many (maybe 30%) think they fit somewhere in the modern idea of LGBTQ, and some young people are truly confused about it. So, I'm posting what I find the pertinent Scriptures teach on males relations to males. I'll be using the 1885 English Revised Version because of its literal accuracy. I'll usually use the 1828 Webster's Dictionary for English, since I'm using an older English version. On definition of the Hebrew and Greek I'll use accepted standard reference works.

Sodom:
Lot, being covetous chooses the land toward Sodom because of its fruitfulness, being called "like the garden of the LORD". (Gen. 13:10, ERV)
"Now the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners against the LORD exceedingly." (Gen 13:13, ERV)

Webster's: "men, plu. of man. Two or more males, individuals of the human race...Persons; people; mankind; in an indefinite sense", Strong's "Hebrew enowsh a mortal, a man in general". Therefore, Gen. 13:13 would mean the "people" of Sodom were exceedingly wicked, not just the males.

A key verse about "men" and "males" in OT Hebrew:
In Gen. 17:23 is the strange sounding phrase "every male among the men of Abraham's house" where "male" is the Hebrew zakar and "men" is the Hebrew enowsh. It is clear that the English "men" must be seen in context to determine if it means males; or mortals, humans in general.

"But before they lay down, the men(enowsh) of the city, even the men(enowsh) of Sodom, compassed the house round, both young and old, all the people from every quarter; and they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them. And Lot went out unto them to the door, and shut the door after him. And he said, I pray you, my brethren, do not so wickedly. The word "men" here means young and old, all the people, male and female. There is no reason to think only males here because it is all the people. This wicked people want to "know them", the angels who appear as men; and we know this has sexual connotations because of Lot's offer to give his virgin daughters to them. Lot addresses his fellow citizens as "brethren", the Hebrew 'ach and Strong's gives "a brother" as the basic meaning, but then adds {used in the widest sense of literal relationship and metaphorical affinity or resemblance (like H1).} Webster's defines "brother" literally as male, but definition #2 reads "Any one closely united; an associate; as a band of brothers." When we say "brethren of the church" we don't exclude the ladies. Lot is speaking as we would say "neighbors". Verse nine clearly states an act of violence, "drew near to break the door", in other words this was going to be a rape, and rape is an act of dominance and violence, not sexual desire. In years past I'd have considered rape an act solely committed by males, but in our wicked day it's clear it can apply to both sexes. I can only see attempted rape here in the Sodom record, possibly by the entire city rather than only the males. The Lord GOD tells us what the sin of Sodom was:

No sexual sin is specifically mentioned here, but the sins of "pride" and "haughtiness" are clearly mentioned. Yet there is the word "abomination" that translates the Hebrew to`ebah and Strong's defines it thus: "1(properly) something disgusting; 2(morally, as noun) an abhorrence; 3(especially) idolatry; 4(concretely) and idol." This Hebrew word is found 41 times in Ezekiel, more than any other OT book and it seems to be largely associated with idolatry in Ezekiel, yet 22:11 does connect it with adultery, and again in 33:26. More on this word "abomination" later when looking at Lev. 18:22 and Deut. 23:17.

Jesus spoke of Sodom, and his words spoken to the Jews are:

"And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, as ye go forth out of that house or that city, shake off the dust of your feet. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city." (Matt 10:14-15, ERV)

One other statement about Sodom is in the NT book of Jude:

"And angels which kept not their own principality, but left their proper habitation, he hath kept in everlasting bonds under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them, having in like manner with these given themselves over to fornication, and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the punishment of eternal fire." (Jude 1:6-7, ERV)

Who is being referred to as "these"? It appears to be the angels as I read it. The Revised English Bible clearly translates in that manner:

"Remember too those angels who were not content to maintain the dominion assigned to them, but abandoned their proper dwelling-place; God is holding them, bound in darkness with everlasting chains, for judgement on the great day. Remember Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbouring towns; like the angels, they committed fornication and indulged in unnatural lusts; and in eternal fire they paid the penalty, a warning for all." (Jude 1:6-7, REB)

So what does "strange flesh"(ERV) or "indulged in unnatural lusts"(REB) mean? In the Greek, strange is heteros which Strong's defines as "other or different"; and flesh is sarx which Strong's defines as "flesh (as stripped of the skin)." In Jude 14 the book, Prophecy of Enoch, is mentioned and in that book the story of Gen. 6:1-4 is thought to be about angels, "sons of God"; who have sexual relations with humans, "daughters of men". Since the non-canonical book of Enoch is referenced, I believe the "strange flesh" or "different flesh" refers to the people of Sodom attempting to rape angels, which is clearly a different flesh. The "different flesh" can not mean a human to human, but more fitting to human to angel, see: "All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one flesh of men, and another flesh of beasts, and another flesh of birds, and another of fishes." (1Cor 15:39, ERV)

Isn't pride and a haughty spirit at the base of all violent criminality? Isn't sin very much about pride and a haughty air. We see it daily in minor things, where the normal rules of society are just ignored by those who think it does not apply to them. The healthy person parking in Handicapped Zones; the aggressive, reckless and high speed driving, etc. Prisons are full of people who think society's rules are only for others. The Apocryphal book of Sirach, written about 180 BC, gives a historical look at what the Jews thought about Sodom, and I'll use the old KJV translation:

Sir 16:8 KJVA "Neither spared he the place where Lot sojourned, but abhorred them for their pride."

Leviticus 18:22 and Deut. 23:17,18 will be in the next OP. This is taking more space than I had thought.

People seldom see the human behind the sin.

If you are trying to justify homosexuality, forget it. It does not matter how much you twist the scripture, it falls at the first hurdle. God created make and female. His command was to be fruitful and multiply. Same sex relationships cannot do that. So it is in direct disobedience to God's command. Even cross dressing was prohibited in the OT.

It's no coincidence that the arrogant flaunting of rebellion is known as gay pride. It is no coincidence that the alphabet soup of sexual perversion has hijacked the rainbow for it's symbol of evil. You can tie a ribbon around a pig. It is still a pig. 1 Corinthians 6:9 lists the sins that disqualify a person from the Kingdom of God. Homosexuality is one of those sins.

I'm not qualified to comment on the sodomite part; but I use the term "homosexual" for a couple or reasons: 1) It's an accurate description; and 2) Homosexuals prefer the term "gay" I think; however, there's nothing gay about it. I used to use the word "homo" simply as a shortened version of homosexual but it turned out to be more trouble than it was worth.

Lot, being covetous chooses the land toward Sodom because of its fruitfulness, being called "like the garden of the LORD". (Gen. 13:10, ERV)
"Now the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners against the LORD exceedingly." (Gen 13:13, ERV)

Webster's: "men, plu. of man. Two or more males, individuals of the human race...Persons; people; mankind; in an indefinite sense", Strong's "Hebrew enowsh a mortal, a man in general". Therefore, Gen. 13:13 would mean the "people" of Sodom were exceedingly wicked, not just the males.

A key verse about "men" and "males" in OT Hebrew:
In Gen. 17:23 is the strange sounding phrase "every male among the men of Abraham's house" where "male" is the Hebrew zakar and "men" is the Hebrew enowsh. It is clear that the English "men" must be seen in context to determine if it means males; or mortals, humans in general.

"But before they lay down, the men(enowsh) of the city, even the men(enowsh) of Sodom, compassed the house round, both young and old, all the people from every quarter; and they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them. And Lot went out unto them to the door, and shut the door after him. And he said, I pray you, my brethren, do not so wickedly. Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; forasmuch as they are come under the shadow of my roof. And they said, Stand back. And they said, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and drew near to break the door." (Gen 19:4-9, ERV)

The word "men" here means young and old, all the people, male and female. There is no reason to think only males here because it is all the people. This wicked people want to "know them", the angels who appear as men; and we know this has sexual connotations because of Lot's offer to give his virgin daughters to them. Lot addresses his fellow citizens as "brethren", the Hebrew 'ach and Strong's gives "a brother" as the basic meaning, but then adds {used in the widest sense of literal relationship and metaphorical affinity or resemblance (like H1).} Webster's defines "brother" literally as male, but definition #2 reads "Any one closely united; an associate; as a band of brothers." When we say "brethren of the church" we don't exclude the ladies. Lot is speaking as we would say "neighbors". Verse nine clearly states an act of violence, "drew near to break the door", in other words this was going to be a rape, and rape is an act of dominance and violence, not sexual desire. In years past I'd have considered rape an act solely committed by males, but in our wicked day it's clear it can apply to both sexes. I can only see attempted rape here in the Sodom record, possibly by the entire city rather than only the males. The Lord GOD tells us what the sin of Sodom was:

"As I live, saith the Lord GOD, Sodom thy sister hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou and thy daughters. Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom; pride, fulness of bread, and prosperous ease was in her and in her daughters; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good." (Ezek 16:48-50, ERV)

No sexual sin is specifically mentioned here, but the sins of "pride" and "haughtiness" are clearly mentioned. Yet there is the word "abomination" that translates the Hebrew to`ebah and Strong's defines it thus: "1(properly) something disgusting; 2(morally, as noun) an abhorrence; 3(especially) idolatry; 4(concretely) and idol." This Hebrew word is found 41 times in Ezekiel, more than any other OT book and it seems to be largely associated with idolatry in Ezekiel, yet 22:11 does connect it with adultery, and again in 33:26. More on this word "abomination" later when looking at Lev. 18:22 and Deut. 23:17.

Jesus spoke of Sodom, and his words spoken to the Jews are:

"And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, as ye go forth out of that house or that city, shake off the dust of your feet. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city." (Matt 10:14-15, ERV)

One other statement about Sodom is in the NT book of Jude:

"And angels which kept not their own principality, but left their proper habitation, he hath kept in everlasting bonds under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them, having in like manner with these given themselves over to fornication, and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the punishment of eternal fire." (Jude 1:6-7, ERV)

Who is being referred to as "these"? It appears to be the angels as I read it. The Revised English Bible clearly translates in that manner:

"Remember too those angels who were not content to maintain the dominion assigned to them, but abandoned their proper dwelling-place; God is holding them, bound in darkness with everlasting chains, for judgement on the great day. Remember Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbouring towns; like the angels, they committed fornication and indulged in unnatural lusts; and in eternal fire they paid the penalty, a warning for all." (Jude 1:6-7, REB)

So what does "strange flesh"(ERV) or "indulged in unnatural lusts"(REB) mean? In the Greek, strange is heteros which Strong's defines as "other or different"; and flesh is sarx which Strong's defines as "flesh (as stripped of the skin)." In Jude 14 the book, Prophecy of Enoch, is mentioned and in that book the story of Gen. 6:1-4 is thought to be about angels, "sons of God"; who have sexual relations with humans, "daughters of men". Since the non-canonical book of Enoch is referenced, I believe the "strange flesh" or "different flesh" refers to the people of Sodom attempting to rape angels, which is clearly a different flesh. The "different flesh" can not mean a human to human, but more fitting to human to angel, see: "All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one flesh of men, and another flesh of beasts, and another flesh of birds, and another of fishes." (1Cor 15:39, ERV)

Isn't pride and a haughty spirit at the base of all violent criminality? Isn't sin very much about pride and a haughty air. We see it daily in minor things, where the normal rules of society are just ignored by those who think it does not apply to them. The healthy person parking in Handicapped Zones; the aggressive, reckless and high speed driving, etc. Prisons are full of people who think society's rules are only for others. The Apocryphal book of Sirach, written about 180 BC, gives a historical look at what the Jews thought about Sodom, and I'll use the old KJV translation:

Sir 16:8 KJVA "Neither spared he the place where Lot sojourned, but abhorred them for their pride."

Leviticus 18:22 and Deut. 23:17,18 will be in the next OP. This is taking more space than I had thought.
So, if I follow your argument here. You are basically trying to say that because it was angels (male) that these men (which is the right translation) wanted to sleep with then it accurately can not be equated to homosexuality? Due to the fact they were angels?

Jude 1:7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

I see these verses as 3 separate occurrences, verse 6 has nothing to do with verse 7. I really don't see how a translator of another translation would do that as this thread suggests it does, or implies. I skimmed over it a little too quickly when I first read it, then when I read the last post just now, I went back and re-read it more intently, I'm like "woah Nellie", what's going on here?

I agree, and we are to be like Jesus walking in His love, It's not about the different sins, but about not sinning, being forgiven and following Him in knowing God's love and being filled with the fulness of God. Remaining in His likeness, which is in His righteousness.

The issue is that many mainstream denominations say that homosexuality is not sin. Christians who speak out against the abomination are attacked. It's hardly surprising. Invariable the most hostility comes from homosexuals who hate to be confronted with their sinful lifestyle. No sin is better or worse. However, few try to whitewash their evil like homosexuals. Who would say that adultery is OK? After all, adulterers supposedly love each other. Who would say that it is OK to steal or murder?

Sin can be forgiven, but not if the sin is not acknowledged and confessed.

Sodomy is in our laws and it is a perfectly good term since we all know what it means.

I don't really care how it started, it communicates.

It communicates well, without being too descriptive, which is not appropriate.

Therefore to say what we all know Sodomy means in more descriptive wording would be too repulsive.

Let's keep the word and I am for labeling all the alphabet people with one word "sodomites'. It may not be exact since the word usually referred to males but we should put them all under that label to avoid the unpleasant task of being too descriptive of the sexual deviancy of the different types, as most people would rather not know about these different types and would die happier having never known humans had sunk so low as to have invented these various types of sexual deviancies.

I refuse to find out what the individual letters of the alphabet group stand for because I don't want to know or have these bad images in my mind that I might learn about. Sodomites I understand and it is all I need to know. Please don't tell me what they do. I don't want the image in my thoughts.

Thank you for the clarity of language (Hebrew & Greek) that you have made in your thread.
Yet, without the illumination of [T] truth by the Holy Spirit, I am hard pressed to imagine any conviction of this sin to be realized by one who is still in the bondage of the First Adam.
Our hearts are in need of regenerating Life giving grace. Until our hearts are opened by the Holy Spirit to receive the things of God, “these things remain foolishness to the natural man.” This particular sin of both men and women is mentioned in Romans Chapter 1 along with a “parade” of other sins of the flesh that are in need of confession and repentance unto God.

Fiddle with the language and strip it of its meaning, in one generation the 2 testaments will be dead. Remove the sin of homosexuality, same sex marriage is feasible. This is post-modernism taking the first steps of destroying institutions of God. Check out keyword "homosexual theology". The arguments are similar.

Thank you for permitting the OP. My purpose is to expose the utter laziness, or maybe incompetence, that refuses to work at serious exegesis of the pertinent Bible passages. To be clear, I'm not supporting the LGBTQ crowd and find it repulsive to hear a man refer to another man as his "husband". Yet it seems so much easier for too many Christians to just throw labels about that actually have no equivalent in the Hebrew or Greek of the Bible, even when they do not match or line up with the Scripture that they claim as proof. This is very serious business and I keep two particular verses in mind in my responsibility as I approach this 'hot button' topic:

"But whoso shall cause one of these little ones which believe on me to stumble, it is profitable for him that a great millstone should be hanged about his neck, and that he should be sunk in the depth of the sea." (Matt 18:6, ERV)

"My friends, not many of you should become teachers, for you may be certain that we who teach will ourselves face severer judgement." (Jas 3:1, REB)

What about those leaders in the 'Bible-believing' churches who run this particular minority out of the churches with condemnation, empty promises and unworkable solutions, to where they seek fellowship in the apostate mainline churches; or they just drop out of fellowship altogether. Maybe one needs to have encountered this difficult situation in their own family or church to be driven to such a serious and detailed study of the matter. There is a movie that is interesting on this topic, Prayers for Bobby, which can be watched on youtube:

The movie is certainly not perfect, but it does get an important point across about what is happening in so many churches and the effect it is having on those entrusted to them for their spiritual care.

Failure to work anything but a serious exegesis of any text of Scripture, will result in a serious failure in following the illuminated path of the Holy Spirit. There is no growth in “grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ on the path of bad hermanutics.

Instead of trying to be politically correct and getting our Ts crossed and Is dotted the overview is this.

Any intimate relationship out side of a man and women who has made a life time bond. ( This is now bone of my bone flesh of my flesh) is a abomanation to the Lord.

The Lord has made it quite clear in his judgement that intimacy between a male and female under the bonds of lifetime commitment is the blessed and approved standard to his creation.
Anything else is regarded as immoral and filthy.

I bring this up for one simple fact. The law is directed to all man kind.

Therefore you adulterers, fornicators, are no different than bob or joe or Ann and sue having a intimate relationship.

I will go further to say because of sexual immorality you have same sex partners and marriages.
For some have been given over to a reprobate mind. Believing the lie that love is love.
A seared conscience denying the word of God. Creating there own god. Being in bondage to there own lusts.
Those that promote this kind of union in society are judged more harshly.

I think your point is good but you lack one thing "Cause and Effect".

homosexuality is the end of the line for all nations who accept it.

the fornication, drunkenness, murder, adultery have always proceeded homosexuality.

the effect of this sin is caused by willful sin in other areas.

primarily :

  1. in the family
  2. in the church
  3. in the leadership
  4. in the school
All have sinned there is none that does right. All have gone their own way doing what is right in their own sight.

many today point at a "sin" to justify another sin. God doesn't work that way.
