The first time (advent!) Joshua comes to the Gibeonites, he comes in judgement. They know they are doomed, they know that they are under judgement. But instead of judgement the Gibeonites plea for and obtain a covenant of peace. Which Joshua confirms. They are given mercy. They seek a covenant KNOWING that Jesus is good and righteous and just.

The second time (advent!) Joshua comes, he comes in a response to a call. He comes in mercy to the Gibeonites who are SURROUNDED by antagonistic Canaanite kings who all seek to destroy them BECAUSE they are under the covenant. Note: the kings seek to kill the Gibeonites....not Joshua who they KNOW they can never defeat.
