ISIS jihadis insist they took down the airliner, but this evening it was claimed that its co-pilot had complained to family that the aircraft's condition "left much to be desired" shortly before the doomed flight took off.

Look at Syria, and what Russia said to the USA about 2 weeks ago... Russia said they would shoot down any american plane in that airspace.

What would russia have to gain for telling America that they will be shot down if they fly near Syria...

What america has to gain is to show Russia that they are not backing down, that they are not cowering towards Russia....
The same reason why USA has gone against Putins warnings, and the USA is increasing its long range missile capability.

Russia would gain necessary tactical airspace working toward a strategy of keeping a client state afloat and further indebted as well as a favorable position in the region in which the Bear's strength and close proximity are contrasted with America's distance and lack of resolve.

The United States gains nothing comparable by shooting down a Russian airliner. It doesn't show regional supremacy...it just makes the US look like a bad guy to those in the know.

I'll admit the absurd happens, but this is really stretching it.

America has other choices. For example, set up a no-fly zone for Russian military craft but not shoot down civilian aircraft because that is an absurd thing to do.
