Sorry he-rat these are not connected, there is no mention of soon in 2 Peter 3:8, this is a statement about how God views time
Maybe by then God has not given up on man yet and decided to extend the grace period. But the Bible gives clues about how long a generation is or signs when apocalypse is about to happen like in the OT when the flood happened. Many believe that the name of Methuselah is prophetic. That when he dies, the flood will happen. Methuselah and Lamech were the oldest righteous people left, and when they died, the flood happened.
The Greek from Μαθουσαλά or Mathousala, according to the New Testament Greek Lexicon literally means:
"when he dies, there shall be an emission"
Maybe there is someone like Methuselah today, who was born in this generation and has not died yet.
It is a parable that could refer to the past or the future. The Bible records significant events that happen every 70 years. 1948 + 70 = 2018. Jesus could have returned last year. But who knows? Maybe He is extending His grace and will return this year. Who knows, the tribulation and nuclear war will happen this year. The current situation is obvious. China seems to be preparing for something by grabbing Phillipine land and contructing military facilities there. We should be happy if Jesus returns sooner.
No one knows the day or the hour.

Some say the Yellowstone is overdue for an eruption. Others say it will not happen in this generation.
It could be very soon because recently, there are many earthquakes in the Philippines, since we are in the Pacific ring of fire. Since January almost everymonth, there is an earthquake. Now it's becoming more frequent. We had an earthquake yesterday and today.
The world does know about Jesus at this time. But not all have received Him as Lord and Savior.
There is not a country in the world where the words "Christ" or "Christian" have not been heard, or churches do not exist. And Jesus is even found in the Quran, which means that the billions of Muslims know about a man named Jesus (Isa). Jesus (Yeshu) is even found in the Talmud (though not in very flattering terms) and every Jew has heard about Jesus.
As to the end times, we are indeed very near, as is evident in a number ways.

But do you not believe the word "soon" to be a measure of time? If so, how can you believe that how God views time is not connected to what He means when He says He will be coming soon?

This was a dream that I had a few weeks ago:
I dreamt that I was getting married. In the dream I was sitting on a chair waiting to get my hair and makeup done, being prepared for the event. At first I thought that maybe I am going to get married soon (then I panicked and thought no God I am not ready I still need to be changed in some areas) but upon reflection I wonder whether the dream was about being prepared as the bride for Christ??? and maybe he is returning soon???
I also have been thinking that if we are at the hair/makeup stage, the only thing left is to put on the dress before the marriage. So perhaps it is soon?
I know that we are not supposed to get caught up in the when and to get on with life and God's work but it is exciting and kind of scary at the same time.

If the pretrib rapture is right then all christians will be happy because they will not go through the tribulation. But I am not sure if the post tribbers will be included because they want to stay to see the antichrist.
