let me jump in here. shamah is Hebrew roots. a quick explanation of that= they think one has to keep the Law of Moses to be saved. they reject salvation by faith in Christ alone. they think Jesus was crucified on wed, and rose on the Sabbath, so one MUST keep the twilight fri. to twilight sat. Sabbath. they reject Christmas and Easter in favor of keeping the O.T. festivals of Isreal.

If the focus of Christmas is on Christ, it is Christian.
If the focus of Christmas is something else, it is pagan.

I would so like my family to live as God shows us how to live. I would like our celebrations to be the ones that God gave us and showed us the way to truly celebrate them.

I am sure that there are some Christmas celebrations done in the spirit of the Lord.

The Christmas celebration in my family is around a dinner served with very expensive Christmas tableware. There is lots of whispered gossip and old resentments are relived. There is much competition and power struggle. The prayer is long and poetic, but the spirit of the Lord is missing.

I think, those scriptures are talking about people who are actually doing things unto/worshipping idols.

If people are not worshipping idols on Christmas and do not feel it wrong to celebrate Christmas because they are worshipping God and not idols then it is not a sin. But if you feel it is a sin and can't do it with a clear conscious to God and not idols...then don't do it because it is a sin to you....

This could be right if not for all the warning about being deceived.

The one thing about being deceived that is universal is that those who are in this condition are convinced they are not.

I would argue that there is only One power that can free us from deception of the prince of this world. But first one must "Believe" in Him and that means believing in His Words.

But what if the Word of God's instructions are contrary to religious traditions our family has been partaking of for centuries? Like Christmas?

Just try and be truthful regarding the man made tradition of Christmas and see how you are treated by your "Brothers and sisters.

You want to see the division the Christ brings, just separate yourself from religious traditions of man and stick to His Word's and watch the scriptures come alive.

I think Eve was the first example of folks following their own mind when it comes to what is Holy and Good and what is not. By the Grace of God I have learned to defer to the judgment of God where Holy Days are concerned, not my own emotion or vision. I highly recommend relying on the Word of God over the traditions of man. It may not be the most popular move, but the freedom is worth it in this life. And I'm quite sure the Messiah won't be angry if I don't partake of a High Day created by man.

What other believe and do has no bearing on what I believe and do. A similar doctrine ere or there does not make me guilty of others errors. Im sure we can find a single doctrine the we both believe that Mormons believe, does that then make both of us guilty of their many errors?

so, the catholic church overlaid the pagan solstice celebration with celebrating the birth of Christ ( yes, I know most of the scholars you do not trust say Jesus was born sometime in this month), and then overlaid a fertility festival with celebrating the Resurrection , is a bad thing.

while the catholics did a lot of bad things, these were not bad things. unless you think law keeping saves, and then these would not mean much.
