I AM serious! Wouldn't YOU worry about yourself if you went around dressed like John the Baptist?
Dressing like JtB might be more indicative of not caring about such things as fashion or what others think...

It's good that you take that seriously, but I was asking the other guy because he thinks if a person dresses oddly that it may be a sign that they have some "inward mental illness". I was wondering if he thought John the Baptist had mental illness then.

🐸
I am glad you said that, Red Heart, because your partial quote reminds me to encourage everyone to quote rather than paraphrase what the other guy says. In this case, my saying "weird outward appearance may manifest inward mental illness" is because I have such a relative.

Ok...so im an 18 year old male. I converted to Christ two years ago so am still quite new to all this. So I don't know much in terms of general theological knowledge. With that being said, I need some help.

Ive always had super short hair, but my Girlfriend said I should grow it out, so I have been. It's currently at my shoulderblades, and I was going to go to mid back. I must admit my GF was right, I look the best I ever have. But then I read 1 Corinth 11:14. Where Paul says it's against God for a man to have long hair??? I know it's a sin for a man to look feminine, but I certainly don't. And long hair has nothing to do with that. So I'm confused.

Ive done research and I've found that nobody really knows. Some scholars say that it's fine and others say it's sinful. I don't have a pastor I can ask as I don't go to church yet (my parents are atheists) so I'm kinda stuck and just need help. Please. Someone!

1 Corinthians 11:14 is very clear to a man's understanding.
Man should avoid having long hair:
Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?

Remember, in the Old Testament, Samson must have the long hair to maintain his God given strength.
In the New Testament, Jesus Christ himself had a long hair in his time.

This is what God's said:

PROVERBS 3:5
5
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;

Therefore: The very clear understanding of man for having a LONG HAIR isn't the understanding of God.

Paul wrote this verse in 1 Corinthians 11:14. According to Paul it is being taught to him by Jesus Christ.
GALATIANS 1:11-12
11
But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.
12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Therefore: The word LONG HAIR taught by Jesus Christ to Paul is in parable:
MARK 4:34
34
But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.

Nobody could explain the meaning of LONG HAIR but Jesus Christ alone.

Answer: Remember, Paul did not meet Jesus personally too. Jesus was already raised in heaven when Paul is being elected by Jesus. Paul did not see and hear Jesus, despite of that Jesus is still capable to teach.

Let us read again what Paul said:

What a great question! I would say you have hit upon one of the great fork in the roads for all Christians.

The question is "do you want to look like a Christian or be a Christian"?

This was the temptation that Eve had at the tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil. This tree will make you wise so you can be like a man of God whereas the tree of life will fill you with the life of God so you are in fact a man of God from within.

So not only does the post hit this topic but also hits the fundamental topic of who should we be listening to? Your GF tells you one thing and it is good advice, it does make you look better, but then you are bothered by some verse in the Bible, what does it mean? Once again, this is the kind of issue Christians have every day for their entire Christian life.

So then what is the answer?

If you want to be a Christian in reality and not simply an actor playing the part and looking the part you must have a relationship with Jesus where you can ask Him these questions. (I am not downplaying the importance of fellowship, but that comes second, not first). Many people pray and pray and never get an answer, so let's address that.

When I was a teenager my brother and I were putting a sound system in our car. We had followed the directions meticulously and yet no sound. After about two hours of this frustrating failure I asked my brother again "You have followed the directions exactly?" He said yes, except for the ground wire, didn't think that made any difference! So we hooked up the ground wire and poof, everything worked beautifully. The Bible is the ground wire. You can't simply pray, you have to pray and read the word both. Think of yourself as a priest wearing the priestly garments which include the breastplate with the stones on it that God shines on. The word of God is on your heart, the saints of God are on your heart, and to answer your prayers God can shine on them.

However, you must be properly attired to be a priest, it may be that before God will answer your prayers He may point out sins and trespasses that must be dealt with first. If you bypass this you are near a curse. Think of the Christian life as a continuum from a person who is unsaved, in darkness, in sin, and death all the way to the Christian like Elijah whose prayers are effectual. When he prays people are healed, the rain doesn't fall and God's fire will fall. This continuum looks like a bell curve with most Christians in the middle. Halfway between the curse and the blessed hope.

But here is the amazing thing! It is exactly the same God dealing with every single one the same when they pray. When you pray, standing on the blood of Jesus God hears and God answers. He may say that you need to first deal with something. He may respond through another person. The fact is that many people don't believe, that is the biggest insult to God. You came to Him, you prayed, He answered and yet you ignored that answer.

I learned this lesson when I was a very new Christian. The church selected a number of young brothers and sisters to share the message the next week. We were all assigned a paragraph to share. As soon as I went home I got down on my knees and I prayed over that paragraph. I prayed the Lord would make it real to me, that I would have an experience that would illuminate that paragraph in the coming week. I prayed that God would make that word experiential to me. I thoroughly prayed over this so that God would give me the message to speak. Then I said thank you and went about my business. A week later, it is Saturday night, I go before the Lord and I am angry. God, I prayed, how come You didn't answer? He responded "I did"! I was shocked, when? So I began to think on the week and nothing big stood out but there was one little experience I can't even remember that did keep bothering me. Imagine the week is before you like a big mural on the wall and a little pen light keeps pointing at one little experience. So I thought about that and the paragraph and I got it, I saw how that was relevant and that was my message. When you pray you must believe that God hears and that God will answer.

Hmmm... New forum member comes in, first post is to start a thread about a hot button topic, then new forum member vanishes.

As long as y'all have been here, you should recognize a troll when you see one.

But this thread went on for 10 pages with no input from the OP, so apparently the troll was effective and y'all cannot in fact recognize one. Trolls got ya pegged.

Troll or no, I think it's worth the time if there is anybody out there that actually wants to put the word into practice. It's a genuinely confusing topic in a genuinely difficult passage. If somebody comes on the thread and is looking for a quick answer that lets them dismiss the passage, they will find that. If they forgot to pray for understanding, the thread will remind them to pray; if they're wondering if they should look for a deeper meaning, they have a direction to dig.

If we can trust God, he can explain the meaning of LONG HAIR through his words.

This is what the lord Jesus Christ says about women.
1 CORINTHIANS 11:15
15
But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

God requires every woman to have a long hair.

Then God disregard the GENDER of person.
GALATIANS 3:28
28
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

If there is no male or female in the eyes of God.

Question: What is the GENDER of the people in the eyes of God?

This is what God says to all the people.
JEREMIAH 3:14
14
Turn, O backsliding children, saith the Lord; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:

Since in marriage it requires male & female then who is the male & female in this marriage mentioned by God?
This is what God says:
Yes, according to God, in this marriage God is the husband
ISAIAH 54:5
5
For thy Maker is thine husband; the Lord of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.

If God is the HUSBAND or MALE.
So the people in any gender they are the FEMALE.

To be specific:
God is a spiritual male
While Man is a spiritual Female.

1 Corinthians 11:15
In this verse the female is the man (in any gender) that must have long hair.

Question:
What God means by a man (spiritual female) must have a long hair?

When God answered this question then, he can reveal to us the meaning of 1 Corinthians 11:14 That A man Should Not Have a Long Hair.

Remember: 1CORINTHIANS 11:14-15 are commandments by God and it must be followed by man.
But without the revelation of the Lord, No One could fulfill these laws.

Regarding: "To be specific: God is a spiritual male; While Man is a spiritual Female."

And to be even more specific, this should be interpreted metaphorically as employing physical union to symbolize spiritual union.

Regarding Paul's question, "Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him?", I tend to agree although dogmatism is precluded by noticing that Paul sought "to become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some", and in some cases Paul said that his opinions are his own rather than directly from the Lord, as in 1CR 7:12&25. Also, in 1TM 3:7 Paul expresses concern that Christians "have a good reputation with outsiders", and in TIT 2:5 he wants wives "to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God."

All of this leads me to conclude that some biblical instructions are concerned with cultural mores more than moral laws, which means we must discern how they apply in this day and age. My vote is that it is okay for men to be bald, but not for women to shave their heads, and it is okay for men to let their beards and other hair grow long so long as they don't trip over it.

You're made in the image and likeness of God.

Samson got his supernatural strength from God. And that power was bestowed through his long hair. Which is why his enemies schemed to have him seduced so they could cut it and make him succumb to their power.

Samson regrew his hair while in their custody. And then even after they blinded him long before, he blew them.

If God said it was a sin he erred in Samdon.

But he didn't.

Keep your hair.

Let me have this question.

If man is the spiritual female then how to become a spiritual female in the eyes of God as the husband?

According to the lord Jesus Christ the spiritual female must submit herself to God.

EPESHIANS 5:22-23
22
Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

What is the meaning of Wives submit yourselves unto your husband?

This is what God said.
The spiritual female must not use her own understanding because the understanding of man is in letter or literal only.
PROVERBS 3:5
5
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

This is why we are not using our own understanding in the word LONG HAIR.

How about 1 CORINTHIANS 11:14
What is in God's understanding that A man Should Avoid having Long Hair?
