I hope the shutdown is used to get rid of unnecessary government jobs and departments. Paying the interest on the debt has become the largest amount the government now pays. If nothing is done to curtail government spending and pay down the debt, the economy will collapse. If you do not possess independent means of obtaining water and obtaining food, you will likely die through starvation or be be killed for what little you do possess.
I'm not an alarmist. I'm telling you the certain outcome of continuing things as they are. We are already on course to borrow another 2 trillion this fiscal year. The Democrats want to add an additional 1.5 trillion. Too many holes in this boat to plug already. Either serious action takes place soon or buckle up.

A friend received a teaching of how the banks would close on a Friday, open the next Monday and we will have 1/2 our dollars. If soon, it could be a contraction of the Dollar?best wishes

Still collecting my Social Security on time. Still getting my pension. Still working. It's not so bad if you think about it.

At the very least, hopefully this will happen.

The US has to take a serious interest in how to pay off the trillions in debt. Maybe reconfigure the payment schedule. Or create a lot of electronic money without any backing and pay off huge hunks at a time.

I agree, if nothing dramatic is done to address this issue the economy and the banking system of the United States will certainly collapse. And soon too. These are certainly troubling times for sure.

There are relatively simple ways to do it. There is simply no political will to do it.

Government shutdowns have become a way to pass legislation that would not normally pass. The Senate uses it continuously to do this.

There is a solution. On the last day of the fiscal year, if the congress has not fully funded the government, they are required to remain in the chamber 24/7 with out pay until the process is complete. In addition they should be fined $10,000 per day that they run past the end of the fiscal year.

Social Security is not affected by the shutdown, but military (active and retired) income is.
