I am not quite sure about my faith yet but I am trying. While reading about bible and Jesus I asked myself, how do I even pray? I am not sure if I have the right state of mind for that, or if there is a right state of mind. How do you do it? How do you feel before and during the pray? I really want to try.

We find Him in humility and submission, I am coming before a king.
I recall the verse in Psalms guiding us to "enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise". When with begin with thanks and praise I receive His confirmation palpably.

But prayer is an open, from-the-heart conversation with God.
Tell Him everything from the heart, what you need in terms of guidance, help with any material issues and everything else. Remember that you are talking to the Creator of the Universe who put us here and who graces us with Miracles sometimes.
Always end your prayers with gratefulness and for all the good things that you have.
Sometimes or a lot of times people don't appreciate the importance and value of something until they lose it.
So, be grateful and thankful.

Pray as Jesus taught:

TOJ #32: Pray to God as heavenly Father. [Matt. 6:9a//LK11:2a]. I find six separate teachings in Jesus’ Sample Prayer. First, addressing God as our heavenly Father connotes that we who pray are children of God, reborn of the Spirit (JN 3:3-8) through union by Faith with God’s Son (RM 8:9-17, 1JN 5:1-6). James 2:19 says demons or ungodly souls may believe in God’s existence, so I suppose they might address God in order to curse Him (JOB 2:9). {JN 17:1}

TOJ #33: Reverence the Creator. [Matt. 6:9b//LK 11:2b] God’s name refers to His being or essence rather than to a particular word, whether Yahweh, Jehovah or Allah. However, among the names for the personifications of God, Paul believes Jesus should be given preeminence (PHP 2:5-11; TOJ #196).

TOJ #34: Desire God’s will to be done. [Matt. 6:10//LK 11:2c] This is a significant restatement of TOJ #2. “On earth” begins with the prayer’s own life. Jesus exemplified this teaching when He prayed in Gethsemane before His crucifixion {MT 26:39-42//MK 14:36}. God is not our genie; we are His ministers, who cooperate with His Holy Spirit (PHP 2:12-13) in doing His work (EPH 2:10). Thus, there is an implicit condition in “whatever you ask for”, i.e., we must ask in accordance with God’s will (TOJ #51).

Jesus prayed for the Kingdom of God (KOG) or God’s will to be done on earth as it is in heaven, referring to His spiritual reign in the hearts of believers, as in LK 17:20b-21, “The coming of the KOG is not something that can be observed, nor will people say. Here it is, or there it is, because the KOG is in your midst.” The KOG is manifested in the world salt and light or as love and truth (cf. TOJ #19). Examples of such love are mentioned in the Parable of the Sheep and Goats (Matt. 25:31-46, TOJ #35). In the writings of Paul, the KOG is called the body (1CR 12:13, EPH 1:23&5:30) or church of Christ (CL 1:13&18, EPH 2:22, 3:10 & 5:23), which is comprised of local churches (ACTS 9:31, 20:28).

TOJ #35: You may request physical as well as spiritual necessities. [Matt. 6:11//LK 11:3] God is the ultimate source of material blessings (JM 1:17), and He is concerned about our complete welfare, wanting everyone to be fed, clothed and sheltered {MT 6:32, 25:31-46, TOJ #34} as well as saved.

TOJ #36: Admit your faults as you forgive others theirs. [Matt. 6:12//LK 11:4a] The second part of this teaching echoes #14. Genuine saving Faith motivates loving forgiveness. Confession is the key to having a right relationship with God (1JN 1:9), which is manifested by mercy (TOJ #148). {MK 11:25, MT 18:15-17}.

TOJ #37: Pray for power to resist temptations. [Matt. 6:13//LK 11:4b] This also was a major theme of Paul’s instruction about prayer (EPH 1:17-19, PHP 1:9-11, CL 1:10-12) as well as of James’ (JM 4:2, 1:5,12-13). Jesus reiterated this teaching on the Mount of Olives before He was betrayed. {MT 27:41//MK 14:38//LK 22:40&46} We know that God will always grant this prayer request (1CR 10:13). This prayer seems equivalent to protection from the evil one {JN 17:15}.

A systematic study of prayer is the current topic on the Hermeneutics thread, if you would like to participate.
And always remember that like bread and butter, prayer and learning God's Word go together.
Prayer is us talking to God, and GW is Him talking to us.
Like love and marriage, you can't have one without the other.

I like the chess comparison :D Praising him for the rising sun makes a lot of sense to me and I will keep that in mind. For me, the sun is a "touchable" symbol of the cosmic power that gave us life and the first step to a connection to god.

The Lord gave us a Prayer to say every day that basically says this:

Our Father
Who art in Heaven
Hallowed be Your Name
Let Your Will be done on earth as it is in Heaven
Give us this day our daily bread [spiritually and physically]
Forgive us of our sins
As we forgive those who have sinned against us
Lead us not into temptation
Deliver us from Evil
For Thine Kingdom is the Glory and Honor forever and ever
Amen

Now I use my own words and have made this Prayer more personal to myself so it doesn't sound like some recital I do every day.

I also pray like this beginning with:

Father, IN THE NAME OF YESHUA [Jesus]...
(I give God some form of worship like telling Him how good He is to or how wonderful He is)
(And then if I am praying for something to be healed or a need or praying for a miracle or job [whatever it may be] I mention it)
And I always thank Him and end with Amen.

But in time you will figure it out as you understand for yourself how great God is and has been to you in your own personal life.

I am not sure if I have the right state of mind for that, or if there is a right state of mind. How do you do it? How do you feel before and during the pray? I really want to try.
Luke chapter 11

11 Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”

2 So He said to them, “When you pray, say:

Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
4 And forgive us our sins,
For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.”

Jesus provided this model of how to pray. I Matthew chapter 5:17 to chapter 6 : 1-14

Jesus explains what hinders your prayers.

To be effective at praying, you must humble yourself. You must forgive those with whom you have issues. You must confess your sins and ask forgiveness. You must be in a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Are any of these qualities missing in your life, or are you not practicing them, such as humility and forgiveness? YOUR Prayers are not even making it to the ceiling. Get your heart right with God, and everything else will fall into place. You will see effective prayer. You will have an effective prayer.

I am glad you appreciate my post, and I look forward to discussing prayer with you further or systematically
on the Hermeneutics thread. By "systematically" I mean trying to proceed logically and completely,
eventually looking at every relevant NT Scripture regarding the topic. You will notice that the study began
by considering the TOJ as we just did on this thread, and then began looking at the prayers of Paul
for further examples of how to pray.

Kenny Hagin taught on how staying in Him is not a "building up" but a "settling down",
like the verse "Be still, and know that I am God".
The time we spend alone with Him in conversation/communion prepare us for the time in the world we are to do His good will, as we progress in being conformed to the image of the Son.

I had no real prayer life for many years.
About 2 1/2 years ago the circumstances in my life were such that this was no longer an option.

These are the few things that I've learned in that time.

The Father desires to have communion with me. It saddens Him greatly when I neglect to seek His face. And yet, He has never taken a punitive stance against me because of my disobedience in this area, but rather allowed me to suffer the consequences of spiritual neglect until such time as I was ready to take the next step.

God wants to hear my voice. The world and everything in it were spoken into existence. Through prayer we speak into being those things which were not. Salvation of souls, spiritual and physical healing etc.

The more time I spend in prayer the more I want to be in prayer.

Prayers can be offered up as a song.

Every prayer I have ever prayed has been answered. If God is silent when I pray, it does not mean He did not hear me. Learning to accept and be grateful for the silence of God in answer to prayer, is a key step in Christian maturity.

You cannot love your enemies if you do not pray for them.

Pray for the lost before you encounter them, don't wait till afterwards, this will greatly affect your success in evangelism.

No sin is too small to bring before the throne of grace. The smallest sin can greatly hinder prayer.

No sin is too great to bring before the throne of grace, the blood of Christ is sufficient to not only cover our sin but to deliver us from it.

Just as two old friends can sit quietly beside one another and enjoy fellowship without saying a word, the presence of God can be similarly enjoyed. And should.

Fasting in some form or fashion on a regular occasion is not optional.

God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

God gives wisdom. Wisdom and guidance are not the same thing. Continually seeking guidance which may or may not be given, represents a lack of faith. Seeking wisdom, which will always be granted, is a sign of maturity.

What we pray against is just as valuable as what we pray for.

This is just me, I judge no one. I do not trouble God with my finances, He knows what I need and will always supply it. He has proven to me over the years that I am more valuable to him than many sparrows. God allows times of lack for his own purposes, everything happens for my good, instead of seeking deliverance from my circumstances, it is better to seek the lessons to be learned.

To weep before the thrown of grace over sin, not just our sin but that of others, is a great privilege, and reveals that we are close to the heart of Christ.

Christ condemned vain and repetitious prayers. The Lords Prayer is a template which should be used frequently to approach the throne. It is not the length and breadth of our prayers that matter, but the depth.

There's more of course, but this post is already overlong.

Lastly, there is nothing that Satan hates or fears more than a holy man on His knees, and will stop at nothing to keep you from going there.

If I my add too this excellent discourse,

1) Concerning faith,
I ask Jesus whats on His heart and pray in agreement with that.
He always grants His own desire, and our faith is strengthened
exponentially watching the fulfillment of the request!!!

2) Psalm 37:4
Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart.
When Our Blessed Jesus shows up to grant the desire, I always ask for more
of Him!!

-- As a man, even though a Son of The Living God, its just safer that way -- LOL

Jesus told me that He has never spoken a word to you
in all your existence. But He did say that when it is your appointed time
He is going to speak to you:
Depart from me you worker of iniquity for I know you not.

Clearly, this is a sick joke and a troll. Admin, please look at this post.
