Hello and God Bless
I’m new here and I’m new to being a Christian. However after reading Hebrews 6:4 Im
Not sure I can be saved because I was saved at 19 but fell away into unbelief and false doctrines
I came back to the Lord 7 months ago but have struggled with these passages and believing that I am saved.
I wasn’t just back sliding I came to a place where I didn’t believe the Bible was true anymore and I wasn’t even sure Jesus really walked the earth. I was lead into such deception I’m beyond ashamed and saddened that I walked away from such a beautiful Godt from God.
Please anyone can you help me with this awful place I’m in and define these scriptures

4 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age 6 and who have fallen[a] away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace

My first thought and belief on your situation is the Prodigal Son.. Reread the account for yourself, and you should find peace in Jesus. He loves you and will l care for you.

Why are you getting weaker and weaker in faith?
You are the lost sheep, when our lord find out his lost sheep, he must be really happy for you.
Hebrews 6:4-8
When you read this, you feel ashamed, which shows that you still care about the Lord.I can feel the same as you.
Thinking about it,Obedient to God,Whatever the command is, you just need to obedience.
If you have read this passage without any shame, it is really hopeless.

6:9
But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.

Not sure I can be saved because....
ask yourself how great is God, whether He is mighty to save or useless - because you are not worse than any of us. so if God is not great enough to save you, who can He help?

whatever you find lacking in yourself, that would make you worthy of eternal life, even whatever you think, not just what you do, are those things you have the capability to perfect? is God capable?

cast all your cares on Him, because He loves you, and is able to save "to the uttermost"

:)

Hello DawnDe, first off, welcome to CChat! I'm glad that you found us and joined in the discussions with us :)

Second, no worries, as there is an answer to the dilemma that you believe you've found yourself in :giggle:

BTW, have you spoken to your pastor about this yet  If not, why not call him or email him (or even talk to him after services this Sunday) and let him know about your concerns. He is, after all, the Lord's undershepherd, assigned to watch over you/your soul on this side of the grave (an assignment that he will, in fact, be held accountable for by the Lord) .. e.g. Hebrews 13:17.

Also, pastors not only love being helpful and answering their congregant's questions, they are, typically, very good at counsel (and telling your pastor what is going on with you/what you are worried about will help him know how to pray for you too).

That said, I don't believe that sins become unforgiveable because the Lord refuses to forgive a truly penitent sinner (even a Christian who is returning to the faith from a backslidden life), but because certain sins so callous the heart that the sinner is never willing to repent of them again.

This, I also believe, is what is being referred to in Hebrews 6 and 10. These passages were written about 1st Century Jewish ~almost~ believers, men and women who attended church and partook in all that it had to offer them, folks who KNEW, W/O A DOUBT, exactly who the Lord Jesus was, but who, in the end, rejected Him anyway and returned to Judaism. For them, as it says in Hebrews 10:26-27, there no longer remained a sacrifice for their sins, only a terrifying expectation of judgement, because they had fully and knowingly rejected the only Means that they, or any of us have, of being saved.

On the other hand, you didn't leave the faith/reject the Lord Jesus like the folks in Hebrews 6 & 10 did, knowing that both He and the faith were true. Rather, you left due to unbelief instead (which is quite a different thing I think).

To be honest, I did the same thing. I was baptized as an infant and was raised in the church, and I loved it (for the most part anyway). I went to Sunday School from pre-school to 7th grade, sung in the children's choir, went on retreats, was confirmed (at age 12, I think), and then I attended church regularly through high school (you know, the whole 9 yards).

Then, not long after I got to college, I all but walked away from the church completely, into a very fun, but very sinful life/lifestyle! The thing is, I always "thought" that I was a Christian, even after walking away from the church and into sin for 10-12 long years, until the day that I actually became one (a Christian/true believer, that is), two months after my 30th birthday :)

That's when ~EVERYTHING~ changed for me .. e.g. 2 Corinthians 5:17:)

What I came to realize is that I wasn't a Christian who had backslidden, rather, I was just a CINO for all of those years, a "Christian In Name Only". So, I didn't actually return to the faith, because I don't believe that I was ever really a part of it/was never saved to begin with (even though I "thought" that I was).

The big thing is, I am now (a Christian, that is), and I have been one for more than 37 years, PTL. And I believe that this should be YOUR "big thing" too, that you are a Christian NOW (if that is indeed, the case).

Finally, we are admonished/commanded in 2 Corinthians 13:5 to make sure that we are truly in the faith, truly "in Christ". If you don't know the various ways to obey that command, just ask us, and I/we will be happy to help you.

God bless you!!

--David
p.s. - how sin affects us now, as believers, is typically different than it did when we were still outside of Christ. This is one of the things that helps have assurance that we really are who we claim and believe ourselves to be (Christians). As theologian and pastor, A. W. Pink put it,

Your words show that you have indeed repented. Repentance is a change of mind that leads to a change of heart. The prodigal son was welcomed back home by his father without a word of rebuke or condemnation. That is the true heart of God. Be assured that God loves you and is delighted to have you back in His family. I suggest that you start afresh on the basis that Jesus is your saviour and Lord. Read the first two chapters of Ephesians. Write down everything that God says that you are in Christ. That is the real you. Everything else is a lie and deception. Satan is the Accuser of the Brethren. The blood of Christ has already paid for all your sin. Thank God for that and every other blessing that you have.

God bless you Sister!
The first 3 verses are connected to that passage you are concerned about.
Once you have laid foundation you cannot lay it again/get saved again, but simply repent and return to where you left off.
Yes! Like the Prodigal.

Repentance
Faith
Baptism
Laying of hands
resurrection
Eternal Judgement

Hebrews 6:1-3 KJV
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
[2] Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
[3] And this will we do, if God permit.

Are you a Hebrew in the last days? During the time of the great tribulation? No my fellow sister in Christ, you need not to worry about falling away. You are in Christ. Your sins have been washed away by the blood of Christ. It is not on us to stay in Christ, but Christ himself. Christ will keep us for he has sealed us for the day of redemption. The Hebrew passage is for the Jews during the time of their trouble. If they fall away and take the mark of the beast, there is no more sacrifice for them, they shall surely perish.

I was saved at 19
At 19 when you were saved did you experience any of these happenings in your life --------did you have the right Faith at that time -----did you turn from wanting to sin -----did you want to share the Gospel with others -----did your personality change at all -----did you want to please God in your actions ------

This is from Got Questions

https://www.gotquestions.org/how-can-I-know-if-I-am-saved.html

So, how can you know that you are saved? Here are a few things that will be true about you if you are saved:

1. You believe in Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior. This means that you have confessed “with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead” (Romans 10:9).

2. You have repented of your sins. Repentance is the act, enabled by God, of turning away from sin and turning toward God (Acts 11:18). You have “put to death the deeds of your sinful nature” (Romans 8:13, NLT). Yes, you will still sin, but you now have an earnest desire to honor God by following His commands.

3. You have a new heart and a new life (Psalm 51:10; Ezekiel 36:26; John 3:3, 5; 2 Corinthians 5:17). This means that you are no longer the same person that you used to be. Because you have been transformed by the power of God, you now have a desire to glorify Him in everything that you do (1 Corinthians 10:31).

4. You have the Holy Spirit within you. The Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, lives within every believer (Romans 8:9). If you have received salvation, then you have been sealed with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13), who will empower and guide you to become more like Christ (Galatians 5:22–23).

5. You will read and obey the Bible. The Bible is God’s authoritative self-revelation to humanity (2 Timothy 3:16–17), and it is the primary way that He communicates with us. If you have received salvation, then you will want to learn more about God (Philippians 3:10) and His will for your life (Romans 12:2). You will also obey His commands out of love for Him (John 14:15).

6. You will share the gospel with others (Matthew 28:18–20). The gospel is the “good news” of what Jesus Christ has done in dying and rising again. If you have received salvation, then you will testify about the goodness of Jesus and how He transformed your life. You will want others to also experience the joy of salvation

I did do all those things when I got saved at 19 but I didn’t speak in tongues. My life was transformed in that I wanted to tell everyone about Jesus and I stopped doing anything I thought was sinful … so I believe I was saved and was happy in the Lord so I don’t understand why I believed someone when they told me something which made me question things and just fall away …it’s clear at that time I did t have strong faith 😞

Welcome DawnDe.

God Himself draws us to repentance. This is the evidence He is on your side.
Those who are reprobate God never draws again, therefore they can't repent.
Be thankful, & praise His Holy name, for He has shown you mercy.:)

You can be ashamed and saddening for what you did…. but put it behind you. …. You don't want to dwell in that at all, as that is condemnation, and that speaks directly against to what God says in Rom 8:1 about you.

8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are “in Christ Jesus”.

Condemnation (downward judgment) is “the sentence pronounced against someone” …this refers to Rom 5:16 & 18 ….which was death. But God says there is NO condemnation for those “in Christ Jesus”.

To be in Christ Jesus is your Sonship/daughtership status. It is the status you receive when you are born again. ….That Never Changes ….ever!

Rom 8:4talks about our walk …. That is our fellowship…. And that can fluctuate…. for a time, for a season, or many seasons ….But it does not alter your Sonship status, that is a done deal …Not because of what you did or have done, but because of what Jesus Christ accomplished and God accepted on our behalf.

As someone else mentioned…. Hebrews is not written to you…. it is written to the Hebrews, the those of Israel who were most likely going back to the ways of Moses and rejecting the accomplishments of Jesus Christ. But it did not affect their born-again status. The church epistles (Romans through Thessalonians) are those written directly to the Church of God …. US

Just so you know it is not the strength of your Faith that saves you ----it is the Right Faith that saves you -----the Right Faith comes by hearing the Word -----what is important in being Saved is Speaking your Faith out loud -----confessing your faith -----

So the Scripture tells you how to know if your saved -------

Romans 10:9

Amplified Bible, Classic Edition

9 Because if you acknowledge and confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and in your heart believe (adhere to, trust in, and rely on the truth) that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

So at 19 if you believed the scripture here and did what it is telling you to do then you are Saved ---many people backslide and return to the Faith -----

I do think there are many who believe they are saved when they are really Not Saved ---and will get a big shock when they die ------

Okay, you gotta go back to the end of Hebrews 5 to get the context. This is about believers... Hebrew believers going on to maturity.

So the Hebrew believer is being admonished to go on to faithfulness if they fall away. The Hebrews were going back to old Judaistic ways. You can see in Hebrews 10 they were going back to sacrificing animals and were told the sacrifice of animals is no longer required with Jesus as the ultimate lamb.

So with this passage, if a Hebrew believer falls away .. they can't get saved again and put Christ back on the cross.

It's actually saying it's not possible to undo salvation. And that if it were possible, you couldn't get saved again.

So if you are struggling in your walk. Go on to maturity in your faith thru reliance on Jesus and His Word and don't worry about your salvation.

That is in Jesus' hands.

So does it matter that I was saved at 19 but fell away into unbelief for 30 years? I can still come
Back to God ? So it wouldn’t be considered getting saved again right ?

Here is most of the message of Hebrews 6:

(Heb 6:11) And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:
(Heb 6:12) That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
