Because He is perfect in all His ways. We may not always understand His ways or agree with them, thats because we are limited in our understanding.
God is the one who created us. He is greater than us. Are we going to find fault with one who is greater or are we to humbly submit?
Im sure we can all agree in the goodness of God, in that He gave us the gift of salvation. So in the other areas that we dont understand, we should not dwell on these to the point where we lose our way. Instead we have to trust that He knows best.

According to Merriam Webster, the definition of “God" is “the being in perfect power, wisdom, and goodness who is worshipped as creator and ruler of the universe.” To say that God is good means God always acts in a way that is true, noble, right, and good. Goodness is a part of His nature and He cannot contradict His nature. Righteousness and holiness are a part of His nature too. He cannot do anything that is unholy or unrighteous.

So is your question really " How is God capable of continuing to be good when he doesn't receive the same in return?" Or is it more along the lines of "How can I believe the God is always good when there's so much bad in my life and in the world at large?"
And if the absolute worst thing in your life is being overweight, then you are a very fortunate person. You aren't dying of a deadly disease or condition (at least not acutely), you don't live in a war zone, you have enough and more than enough food to eat (which for much of history wasn't the case, that's why people needed to be able to store extra food energy when it was available, just like a hibernating animal). And it's a bad thing that you can work on improving unlike a lot of other bad things that people have little or no control over.
