In the same vein, I'm glad I'm not famous. Seeing all the games the media plays with famous people's lives, just to get more ratings... I never have to worry that people across the country will believe a lie about me just because the media wanted to spin a story a certain way.

I'm glad I have a family who cares about me, but that's a good place to stop. I'm VERY glad nobody else has a reason to care about me. =^.^=

Amen to this!!!

I had a very small slice of this in my hometown, as I had family members who were well-known.

I was at work once when a guy started saying some slightly disparaging thing about someone in my family and said, "It's ok though, I can say that because I know him."

I told him, "Yeah, I know him pretty well, too. I'm his (explanation of my relation to him.)"

The guy looked at me and said, "Really?! What are you doing here? I though you were working over at (place I've never worked at.)"

So this was a guy who thought he knew about my life and where I worked, and better yet, thought he knew who I was (but obviously didn't) -- AND WAS STANDING THERE TALKING RIGHT TO ME!! I was about going crazy. I hate things like that. I had another incidence where I was in ANOTHER STATE and someone out of the blue came up to me and said, "Aren't you related to so-and-so..."

I wasn't sorry when I was eventually able move out of state, and now I'm just a regular nobody -- which is exactly the way I like it.

I was very proud of my family. It was never the association with them that bothered me -- but rather, all the assumptions that came with it.

I can't even imagine how famous people stay sane -- at least, the ones who get thrown into it, not the ones who seek fame as some odd form of life sustenance.

Would we know some of your relatives even if out of the location? That's always interesting!

I dont think I have family that is well-known as far as I know. Maybe in the Philippines. One of my family members was a Christian that was kind of well-known in the country. I didn't say anything about that because then people would have more expectation of me as a Christian but he wouldn't have any direct influence on my growth as a Christian before he went home to be with our Lord. The most I know is he definitely prayed that I get saved, and I did!

Not at all, but I appreciate the inquiry. :giggle:

It was one of those small-town things -- they were well-known among a group of small towns.

My relatives have been retired for many years from what they were known for, and no longer live in the area.

My family has now fallen into obscurity, which is exactly how I like it (though they are still always well-known in their church circles, which is why I go to a different church.)

I'm just headstrong and like to be seen as my own person, as I have different ministry interests than they do and don't want to be pushed into the same box.

The Lord has given me much in some areas of life. In others I've endured significant trials. When I look back on my life I recognize that, due to gifts I was given, I didn't have a lot of the trials that many people must live through, but I did have my own trials. Now that I'm an old man, I'm at peace in Christ, which is like having great wealth. If I had to choose between wealth and that wonderful peace, I'd choose the peace. Thankfully I haven't been asked to choose between those things. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. Blessed be the name of the Lord!

The wealthy client previously sought wordly pleasures to satisfy himself, money just allowed more opportunities, and through those it became noticed by the accountant.

The obese woman's committed adultery in her heart prior to its physical manifestation. She became aware of opportunities to act on it, but her desire was already existent before these appeared.

You say that you are thankful you have limited time and money, which otherwise could lead to problems. The real question here is virtue. Let's use a simple example. Would you commit “X” crime for $1? Likely answer is no. Some people out there will answer yes. Now the question again, this time with $100. Results will differ between people. Again with $10,000. Again with $100,000. Now $10,000,000 and so forth. However, the truth is it was never about the money. Someone with virtue, and integrity will deny the money regardless of the number.

Being thankful is good though, I don't disparage that. However, you needn't worry about what you haven't done. In fact your very awareness of how you might spend such resource and hope that it would be put to good use shows virtue, not lack of. However, those in Christ have the Holy Spirit and as such would be guided to use the resource in the best way. If any mistakes were made the Spirit would let you know, then you grow.

Spare time and money aren't the cause here, they are an accelerant. That is all.

Lust was two of your example cases, such a vice can be accessed from anywhere in the world, within seconds on cheap hardware for free because of the internet. But so can educational content, wholesome inspiring content and, constructive media which builds rather than destroys. The problem is an internal one of intention and the choice to do good or do evil is always there regardless of scale or publicity.

I disagree with your “dabbling” example, it reads as if you down-play one addiction in comparison to another. There is no such thing as a part-time slave. Evil is evil, there is no halfway. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

You do not want to fall into the trap of thinking that certain circumstances are divine judgement. This was the point of the story of Job. Just because He lost all He had, it was no indication of wrong-doing or deserving of such a situation. Such a belief can be devastating. When expanded in its simplest form it leaves the idea of the poor deserving to be poor and the rich as ultimately righteous. This failed logic happens because its on the faulty logic basis of that all is perfect right now and that sadly isn't the case, not yet. It also ignores the long-term. Not all things make sense right this second, and perhaps some of those things will never make sense until major changes and well after the fact.

The solution as always is to love God with all your heart and love your neighbour as yourself. Once we do this, we trust in our Father in Heaven, and know everything will be alright, regardless of any apparent current circumstance. He is above all circumstance. It is His love that keeps us right. We are blessed and shall not lack.

Hi @CalledByChrist,

Thank you for taking the time to write such an in-depth and thoughtful reply. I do understand what you are saying about certain addictions and qualities not being mere "dabbling," but rather, abundance can bring out qualities that were there all along, and perhaps hidden, or more subtle, due to limited resources at the time.

If I may ask, I was curious as to how your previous prayer request on the forum has gone:

My life is not going as I want it right now. I have extremely large debt and no income. I have no career and no career skills.
I have faith that I can win the lottery. Some may laugh, judge, scoff, well continue doing so. But to the one who reads this and can feel where I may be at right now, help me.
I ask for nothing other than your prayer in agreement that I will win this. I know what I will do with the money and in no way want to lead you on or sway you. You either feel me or not.
Please do not pray publicly. I need you to do this in private.

The reason I'm asking is because I've known many Christians and have seen many here over the years ask for prayers that God would allow them to win the lottery, or grant them supernatural success in stock/forum trading.

However, I've never heard of a follow-up story in which this actually happened.

If it's God's will, of course I believe things like this can happen.

But it's just that I never have heard of a single success story like this (yet,) and I was just wondering how your own experience is going.

No win yet unfortunately.

Can I ask, how much money goes towards trying to win the lottery?

What would be your guidelines for someone who is spending just enough on lottery tickets to allow God to let them win, and when they're spending too much, to the point of being wasteful?

I ask because I know gambling is a real problem for a lot of people, and something I plan to write a thread on in the future (I'm just doing some research on the subject for now.)

This week I spent $3.35, some weeks I spend nothing. I only buy one ticket per draw, and I usually only enter when a draw has gained my attention for some reason, higher chances, more prizes or where the prize has accumulated to a higher jackpot amount. It is either for me or not. Buying more tickets does not increase my chances.

I have actually studied different raffle based prize draws, where I can see the entry lists and winners. I can see the amount of money spent on tickets by all players, and how much the person spent who actually won. On the draws I checked, there was an amazing thing noted. More tickets did NOT mean more wins. Time after time, people who spent a few dollars won over the people spending hundreds sometimes thousands! This goes against the idea of those who enter more have more chance. I like to think it is the LORD keeping fairness, otherwise it would just be a case of people with more money winning over those with less; and it's not in His nature to allow such things.

The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD.

I appreciate you sharing this.

Many years ago, I used to buy a $1 ticket for a big jackpot every now and then. For whatever reason, God convicted me one night and I was actually praying that I wouldn't win, because I knew it wasn't His will! And I never bought another ticket again.

I know that for myself, whatever provisions He's choosing to give me are through my trying to educate myself, and then use that knowledge to work to the best of my abilities

I've done a bit of research into the lives of people who have won large sums, and for myself, all I can say is that I'm glad God only gives me what He knows I can handle (for instance, since I am adopted and never had kids, I've always wanted to sponsor the number of kids I had planned to have, and God has been gracious in allowing that.)

But that's just me, and I don't judge anyone else's personal walk with God (unless, of course, it's something interfering with everyday responsibilities.)

A while back, we had someone on the forum who was asking for prayer to bless his day trading. I'm always interested in the follow-up stories, but unfortunately, we never see them.

Thank you for posting! I wish you all the best and I hope you'll keep us posted.

Extrapolation is a strange thing.

A few of the things you have stated are objectively true. But many of your extrapolations led you to false conclusions. I know for a fact that you have stated many things that are objectively untrue about seoulsearch.

I too have read many a story of winners. So many have the same pattern over and over, I do not seek to repeat it in the slightest. I do have something very much different in mind, but the win itself is out of my hands.

Trading is another thing I have studied in the past. Bias is very extreme here, it is very possible to see what you want in the charts, really find patterns which are there, but actually ignore the 100 other indications that tell you it would not work. The numbers also confirm that 95%+ of day traders lose money. Within that remaining 5% most barely break through into profit, with very low income that is not nearly enough to live off. A truly tiny amount of people can consistently earn.

The Lord has blessed me abundantly in certain areas of my life, while in others I have faced deep and meaningful trials. Looking back, I see that because of the gifts I was given, I was spared many hardships that others have had to endure, yet I was still called to carry my own share of struggles.
