Did Jesus Joke Around or Laugh?

There is a movie or two out there the portrays Jesus as having a sense of humor.... So did He? This issue was sort of brought up on DCon's "all agree" thread and I wanted to ask this anyway a few days back. I thought this has always been an interesting topic, and I figured why ruin/possible argue on DCon's thread by expanding on it there.

Although Jesus might not have been into Knock-Knock jokes or crude humor are we to expect that He NEVER laughed or joked around?

What would He find funny? Our senses of humor/ability to laugh HAD to have come from Him right?

His time teaching only took so long, so how did He fill hours of "down time" with the apostles? Or did they joke and He just laughed? ....I'm being serious.:D

I'm sure Jesus (God in flesh) had (has) a sense of humor.

I'd agree, just have in mind that verse speaks about GODLY sorrow, but UNGODLY laughter.

A joyful heart is good medicine, But a broken spirit dries up the bones.

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!

stoicism may have its place, but so to does gladness! :)

i'm a bit unsure as to your point.

what does all that have to do with whether or not our Lord ever smiled or laughed?

Why is there no scripture saying Jesus laughed just to laugh ?... It's because true joy and happiness comes from helping others, rejoicing in another's salvation not from vanity. Selfish pleasure and laughter only comes from a sorrowful heart.. meaning your trying to hide your true feelings...ever heard that saying " laugh now, cry later "..it means don't feel sorrow or pain, just run the red lights in laughter, cry when your dead.. This is used in prison a lot.. I tell you this to help you in healthy laughter and healthy mourning.

i'd have to agree, there are many times i want to hide my feelings.
(this not being one of them)
and times i think i ought to hide what i'm feeling till the Lord sets me straight.

and i can be fairly obtuse, but are you saying the only time i should laugh is in helping others? :confused:
 
I always found it funny how God used sarcasm when He was asking Job about the origins of the Earth. "Tell me, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great!"

the writer of Eccliastes seems to me to be saying, again and again,
that everything is vanity and there's nothing new under the sun.

i wonder if part of the point is we needed Something (Someone) from above the sun?

If your going to laugh in vain... Let it be at your own expense, humility is your friend.. Your saying " the only time " I never said that... And I'm not here to tell you what to laugh at, you should know. I laugh with my son all the time, he does something silly, or starts running fast and jumping around, there's plenty of innocent things to laugh at, " not when someone slips and falls in animal dung as someone suggested earlier .. Why laugh at someone else's expense ? Do you think God laughs at your expense, when you fall ? No, He's to busy trying to lift you back up...

I agree with this.
I have also noticed one thing, and that is when I laugh too much usually something really really negative happens to me afterwards to cause me to cry. It almost kinda of a law that I've observed. Did anyone else have this happen to them? Although I dont do mean laughter. It's the matter of "too much" like hours and hours upon hours of laughing. I've just then restrained myself from funny topics for a short while for that reason... and I felt good about it. Nothing is good if we overdo it. I believe it has to do with self-control.

i was honestly perplexed at the wording.
and i missed the whole 'slip and fall' biz.
i don't appreciate practical jokes nor do i laugh when some is hurt.
but you don't know me, so how could you know?

have i offended you?
perhaps it would be better if we clear the air?
 
He was a friend of sinners - and I'm sure they were laughing as they were imbibing. He sat with them with a stony face?

He delights in us. Does His delight have no joy? No sense of fun?

If He was in all points human as we are, he must have felt ALL the same emotions that we feel.

I believe he laughs with me a lot. And even through me at times. :)
 
Yes, He did and still does joke around and laugh. Don't let all those pictures of serious, depressed, emo Jesus tell you otherwise. You know the ones i'm talking about lol
 
All great points. Before I posted this, I was somewhere in between Brainfreeze's, PM's and SW's thoughts. It made sense to me that Jesus might have maybe laughed at something funny, but I never really saw Him being the joker making them laugh. Slapstick antics between Him and the Apostles during their journey....maybe? ( telling them to leave it out, of course ) Our was it mime type humor? Gentle humor..... maybe? Sarcasm, crude/dirty, or mean spirited humor I obviously saw as "ours", being too vile for Christ. We have to admit He did have some down time with them, but we may never truly know.

I was just wondering how the average person saw His personality being like. I know there's scripture that points to a certain degree of a humor like tone when He spoke, but did they smile when He said it? I guess I just sometimes see Christians (including myself) as being a bit too uptight sometimes? Why though?

If we are to show others what it is like to follow Him, why not put a smile on their face while doing so?
We now agree that's what Jesus would do.:D
