We survived the Civil war, the Spanish flu, and The Great Depression in part by the Government accepting it/s social responsibility to help it own people and restart a stalled economy. We can do it again!

It's the emotionally invested part that I wanted to clarify. It's not the candidates that I'm invested in. It's the system. It rarely fails and when it does it usually corrects itself in time. That's why it still works, in spite of plenty of knuckle heads that put their faith in men or parties.
