I think we all have issues we need to overcome ... it is inherent in the "old man". Doesn't have to be sexual sin ... could be addiction, lying, stealing, murder, etc. etc.
Paul gives us good instruction in Philippians. He had both "good" and "bad" things in his life ... stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee (what was considered "good" according to the flesh).
Paul also had: concerning zeal, persecuting the church (not good spiritually speaking).
However, what Paul learned to do in order to overcome and be a faithful steward of the things of God:
Philippians 3:
13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
We all have "good" and "not good" things we have gone through in our lives. We have to forget both in our daily endeavor to press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Our walk with God is moment by moment. Hopefully each and every day our walk with God is stronger (and more successful) than yesterday and tomorrow we will be stronger (and more successful) than today as God continues to work within us to remove those things which hinder our walk with Him.
This world is designed to draw us away from Father. As we learn to rely on Him and His provision for us, we trust Him more and we learn to let go of those things which, in the past, defined us (both bad and good). We let those things go as we are continuously being conformed by God into the image of His Son. Because of the frailty of our flesh, we will never attain full and complete transformation in this life ... but we can grow and mature as members of the body of our Lord Jesus Christ and function more perfectly as members in particular, set specifically by God in the body where it has pleased Him.
I believe when we get our eyes off of ourselves and focus on our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, all these things will just melt away. And if we are counseling another believer who needs to be delivered from whatever fleshly, carnal frailty he or she has, help him or her to keep heart and mind focused on Jesus. He is the One Who cleanses us from all unrighteousness and He will help us to overcome.

You crack me up, lol. The point he was making was good, that we all have stuff, sin, that we need to keep our eyes on Him and off ourselves. Murder is so much more than an issue, lol, you are right, especially for the victim, lol.

The "issues we all have to overcome" pointed out in Post #43 are issues that result from the sins committed.
Even after we are born again, and no longer partake of our former lifestyle of sin (whether sexual immorality, addiction, lying, stealing, murder, etc., etc.), we still deal with the "issues we all have to overcome" ... the resulting shame, condemnation, sorrow that crops up as we recall our former lifestyle.
We have an adversary who whispers in our ears, reminding us of what we have done in the past, endeavoring to get us to forget who and what we are in our Lord Jesus Christ.
That was the point.

I have read your posts and I love your insight and understanding.
Your posts also bring encouragement to those who still struggle with baggage bought over when they come to Jesus.
If memory serves me it was you who said that people who still struggle with things need a safe environment to be able to talk about without fear and condemnation.

Truth for me is though that if we truly understand whom we are in Jesus and how much he loves us and we look to him the old man will decrease and the new man will increase.

Right. Romans 6 tells us the old man was crucified (vs 6) and we now walk in newness of life (vs 4).
And in Eph 4 we are told to put off concerning the former conversation, the old man (vs 22).
The old man is crucified, dead, buried according to Romans 6, but we still have the old habits that were established over years (and in some cases decades). It is these habits, tendencies, practices which we are instructed to put off because they hinder us in our walk with the Lord Jesus Christ and with our Father God.
At the time we were born again, old man died, and new man was created within by the same powerful Father Who raised Jesus Christ from the dead.
It is this new man which is renewed day by day (referred to as the inward man - 2 Cor 4:16);
It is this new man which is created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them (Eph 2:10);
It is this new man which grows and matures so that we are no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive (Eph 4:14);
We hinder ourselves when we remain in spiritual infancy and live according to our old habit patterns. We are to study God's Word so that we may know the things that are freely given to us by God, grow in our relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father.
We have an adversary whose ministry is to steal, kill, destroy (John 10:10) and we have a much more powerful Lord and Savior Who came to give us life ... and life more abundantly.
Where do we want to live our lives?
Do we want to have life ... born again, having eternal life, yet continuing in those old habit patterns, the former conversation (old man)?
Or do we want to have that life more abundantly ... where we grow up, mature, walk worthy of the vocation wherewith we have been called (new man)?
God is going to work within each and every born again believer. He works within each and every one of us individually because He is a faithful Heavenly Father.
Some of God's children run from Him, not wanting to endure the chastening of Father.
Some of God's children run to Him, not enjoying the chastening but knowing that the chastening results in spiritual growth even as God removes the old, dead, unprofitable former conversation of the flesh.
It is not "enjoyable" to die to the old habit patterns that have been established over many years. These habits are comfortable to us and may not be in our best interest (spiritually speaking). However, it is necessary and needful for God to bring to our attention those things which hinder us in our walk with Him so that our fellowship with Him grows more vital and vibrant each day.

It doesn't come up often for me and I generally clarify if/when it does.
