"You never get a second chance..."

All together now:

"To make a first impression."

Keeping that thought firmly in mind, what is the most important first impression to make on a first date? What kind of impression do you want to make? What kind of impression is important for you that your date make?

Guys what kind of impression do you want to make on a first date? Do you want to dress up? Are you going for more of a poor but competent person look? Do you go clean shaven or let a little scruff grow out? Some girls find scruff attractive... But others say it is prickly.

"Use the bait for the fish you want to catch." Maybe it depends on what kind of girl you are trying to get.

"Why did Lynx ask guys first? Why didn't he ask girls first? Lynx is a bigot!". No, I'm a guy and I have a major vested interest in what guys do on a first date. Hang on, I'll get to you. :p

Girls do you get dressed up? Do you put on makeup? Do you make a fancy hairdo? Or do you go more for a girl next door kind of vibe?

Guys what kind of first impression is important for you that a date give? Do you like to know that a girl took a little effort to go out on a date with you? Or do you prefer a woman who did not spend that much time and money on her appearance?

Girls, same question, but I don't even have enough information to put out examples. Just fill in the blanks about what is important to you for a guy's first date first impression.

Fill in the blanks? Like _________? I, ______ take you _______to be my ______. __________. date.

If he got me to agree to go on a date with him, he's probably already made a reasonably favorable first impression. At least I think he may be a good guy. Beyond that, unless we've been close friends for a while I probably don't want to get all dressed up and make the first date some big thing. First date is for getting to know person I don't know, better if neither of us put too much of an investment of time and money into it. And if I ever go on one, well I might just be making a list of everything I want to find out about said guy to know if I should go on a second date with him.

So.....a million years ago when I was single , I went on a lot of first dates , I was never nervous because , I wasn't looking for mr right , I had no expectations at all , I always paid my half and went thinking to myself that I might have a good laugh and it was better than sitting at home watching TV all night .
One think that puts me off a guy instantly is a complainer , a negative glass half empty all the time kind of guy , a guy who wants me to feel sorry for him for some petty kind of reason .
I like someone who likes to smile and laugh . On a first date I prefer a guy to make a bit of an effort , have a shave , clean clothes . U can get relaxed when we r official 😜 .
Personally , I'm not comfortable around macho men , I don't hate them or anything like that but , wouldn't choose them as a boyfriend . I'm very happy if a guy doesn't drink alcohol at all or only drinks it a little bit , as long as he doesn't mind that I drink a bit occasionally .
I'm a live and let live kind of girl , don't like judgy , look down their nose kind of people .
One last thing , don't like guys if I get the impression they would want to try to control me , what I wear , who my friends r , what kind of job I do etc , I wouldn't b like that to them so I don't want them being like that to me .
Do unto others......and have some fun 😁 .

I went on a date last year with a guy who apparently noticed me around the place where I live, as he was a distant neighbor.

I felt bad because he showed up in a nice button down shirt and dress pants -- and I showed up in my usual, jeans and a t-shirt (but in my defense, it was a dressier t-shirt than my normal ones with cartoon characters on them.) He was super nice, but I already felt like I was a maybe a huge disappointment to him.

I definitely go for a girl-next door vibe. I do wear makeup every time I go out in public because I'm self-conscious of old acne scars; I also struggle with rosacea and eczema, and nowadays if you have red patches on your skin, people will think you're diseased, so I cover it up the best I can. My avatar puts it out there clearly -- that's how I look on any normal day, and that's probably how I'd show up for a date. I don't feel like I look good in heavy makeup at all, so I don't even try.

We never wound up going out again -- life just got busy and we kind of lost touch.

It's a strange feeling because part of me wishes for a serious relationship... but the vast majority of me is actually scared to death.

Girls do you get dressed up? Depends where you go. If dancing have to wear a dress. But if its a pyjama party you have to wear pyjamas.

Do you put on makeup? No unless its something like a screen test. Or a ball where there are going to be photos taken.

Do you make a fancy hairdo? No my hair is so straight and boring I can't even braid it. If I do want curls I'd have to do it the night before and it takes a lot of effort.

Or do you go more for a girl next door kind of vibe? I am the girl next door, I live in the suburbs. If I wanted to look like a drag queen I'd live on K road.

I am a man who showers daily. For a date, I would be clean, well-groomed, have my clothes ironed, and wear a big smile. I would aim to dress appropriately for the activity we have planned.

I currently maintain a trimmed beard and make sure it is even, though sometimes I wonder if being clean-shaven might be better. I like both styles equally, so a future partner could choose, but I’m unsure which to go with for a date.

While I don’t mind going out to eat, I find it more enjoyable to do an activity together, even if it’s just taking a walk.

I’m unsure whether to specify what qualities I find appealing in a woman for a good first impression.

i am married everyone. you speak loudly with normalcy. i had a few girlfriends who were telling me what to wear. my rule is i'll listen the 1st time, after that, i'll respond as such: "alright, i'll wear that but i want you to wear that". 1 girl in particular, vehemently denied & i told her she was controlling & called her a "double standard queen". she looked at me with disgust like i was the guilty party & wouldn't admit her fault of the double standard. she acted this out in other ways too. we only dated for 2 weeks. she was the prettiest girl i ever dated too. once, i ASKED a girl to wear a certain perfume & she called me controlling. holy heavens!!! ASKING is controlling, NO WAY IT IS! generally, when i was dating i presented myself properly but never got involved in any special appearance looks. i don't have the looks anyway.

I never have been on a date. Mostly from apathy.

This was intended as a conversation starter thread, not market research. ;)

Wot, surely Lynx lies and has taken out Seoulsearch once or twice.
What constitutes a date anyhow?

Isn't it just like an appointment one-on-one with someone, in this context, with the opposite sex?

My instincts were wrong then 😞 Spidey senses failed me , that doesn't often happen .

Lol!

Why is is impossible to believe that a guy and a girl can just be friends and never go on a date?

No, @Lynx and I have never dated. No, we've never made a "one-on-one appointment."

But I've been to 3 meetups where we both attended, and we have taken turns paying for each other's meals.

You would be wrong.

As far as I know, a date is kind of like a fig. They are used a lot by Larabar as sweetener in their snack bars.

Oh ok. I don't do dates either. One time a doctor asked me about dating, I had no idea what he meant. He was from the USA, where they do such things.
