It's possible that the news details which I read are wrong. I don't know the man's history personally. But grasping for straws, a big issue is being made about his Republican membership. It becomes obvious when digging deeper that it may be an irrelevant detail.
Anyway, all this information about the man who fired the gun was available to the public very quickly after the incident.

And the MSM don't like the fact that Trump said "Fight! Fight! Fight!" All of a sudden they are virtue signaling about "violence". They wanted Trump to be killed, but they do not want any response to this attack, since they are partly responsible.

the responsibile thing for a leader of the country to do is not to tell his supporters to "fight" in this situation, particularly because of the harsh, violent divisions he and the right wing media have helped create in the country.
if he says "fight" it is seriously going to be taken by a lot of nut jobs as a command to act violently and take 'revenge' on their neighbors, whom they see as their enemies.
His natural immediate reaction was violent and reactionary. But what will he say when he has had time to think?
