Genesis 14:20 Abram gives the best 10% of the ALL the WAR SPOILS from the Kings he conquered while retrieving his kidnapped nephew Lot, to the Priest & King of Salem, Melchizedek.
Abram gives the the remaining 90% to Sodom & Gomorrah (verse's 21-24). Abram kept NOTHING for himself!
This event takes place 400 plus years before the tithing law, given by Moses to Israel only! Was implemented to support the Levites & Temple.
There is no record in scripture of Abram PAYING TITHE on his personal items. Cattle, oil, wine, corn, wheat, animals etc.
BTW: Under Mosaic law, tithes were only paid by land owners & only on yearly INCREASES. Never on a future pay check. Futhermore, if a man wanted to take cash to the Temple instead of grain or sheep. He would have to add 1/5. I.E pay an additional 20% tax (Lev 27:31).
Every 7th (Sabbath) year (Ex 23:10-11) & 50th (Jubilee) year (Lev 25:10-11), the entire nation of tithers, were completely excluded from paying tithes for those entire years.
I submitt to the promoters of paying 10% of one's weekly income. Under the law you are guilty of robbing God of the 20% tax on cash.
Tithe Origin
Lev 27:30 And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD'S: it is holy unto the LORD.
(NOTE: land, seed, fruit)
31 And if a man will at all redeem ought of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof.
(NOTE: If the landowner wanted to bring cash he had to pay an extra 20% fee/tax)
32 And concerning the tithe of the herd, or of the flock, even of whatsoever passeth under the rod, the tenth shall be holy unto the LORD.
(NOTE: One out of 10 animals that passes under the rod were given to the priesthood. Ok, a rod was put up, you walk your animals 1 by 1 under it. At #10 you give one to the Priesthood. If you only had 9 you gave ZERO, if you has 19 animals you gave only 1 = 5%)
33 He shall not search whether it be good or bad, neither shall he change it: and if he change it at all, then both it and the change thereof shall be holy; it shall not be redeemed.
34 These are the commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses for the children of Israel in mount Sinai.
(NOTE: This command is given "ONLY to the children of Israel" on Mt Sinai (NOT THE CHURCH).
BTW:
A fisherman paid nothing on his catch, tradesmen, cobblers, who made the shoes for the servants of the field, did not tithe. Carpenters, potters, the women who made the soldiers garments, the servants who worked in the fields for wages, were not required to tithe.
The tithe was exclusively a tax on the produce in the land of Israel & animal INCREASES (Deut 14:22).
Land owners paid three tithes of a tenth each, not one. The Levitical tithe (Num 18:19-20), the festival tithe (Deut14:22-17), and the poor tithe, every 3rd year (Deut 14:28-29). Paid to the tribe of Levi within one of 48 designated cities within Israel (Num 35:7).
