i'm surprised to see so many people not watching sports. i wonder if a large # of people outside of the u..s.a. are not naturally in the habit of viewing sports.

I am quite surprised too, I thought this would go other way around.. :D
Finns definitely watch sports, or then I am just living in the wrong place here

it seems most people don't like sports because they don't understand them. same with games or any other subject. i remember once, a girlfriend i had, didn't like the card game pinochle. so i spent some time teaching it to her, she caught on, played decently well & she said, "i like this game now"!

Cross-country skiing or downhill skiing?
my former g.f. & i used to go to hunter mountain, new york, to watch the downhill skiers. by course, i brought my binoculars. most were casual skiers but every now & then, a talented skier was fun to watch. once, a famous skier was there. so we walked into the zigzag bar & it was totally packed . i asked someone what's going on & he said so & so is here & there he is. some famous skier, i don't remember his name but there was about 2,000 people there. then we'd dine at 1of the local restaurants.

One thought I had - my sister is a runner, she runs marathons. It is super expensive. Ok the sport itself may not be..all you really need are a good pair of running shoes- but to compete or participate officially costs both time and money. And marathons are held all over the world..and it costs thousands to get there, find accomodation, entry fee etc.

Karlon mentioned skiing..it's not a cheap sport. Skifields and equipment cost a bomb. The super rich always go to places like Aspen and Klosters.

Golf courses require millions to maintain - all that grass needs to be mown. There is a lot of money in sports.
America's cup (yachting) is a rich man's game. Those boats don't pay for themselves, they require serious money, sponsorship deals etc. Polo, you need to own all those horses.

I have a cousin who is like a sports analytics for the New York Jets. I didn't have any idea that was a full-time job - calculate all the stats for the game, run the numbers, get sponsorship deals etc. To go the games, costs in terms of tickets, and they need bums on seats. Why would you go if you can't afford it. What would the point be of watching if you have no skin in the game.

To pass the time maybe, to marvel at athletes? Seriously I have other things to think about, and better pass times, then to sit and watch them all day. Half an hour of the newshour on tv is always taken up with sports - who won the championships, and then they have press junkets talking to the breathless winners. I could never even watch a whole half hour of it.

I don't know it's just not fun. Maybe I'm just a loser, who's unco at sports and don't feel any connection with it. If you are female and into sports, that's also a bit of a danger because, when you are young coaches can and do take advantage. I have heard horror stories of gymnastics and cycling for women and it's actually tainted sport for me. Drugs in sports too. Rugby - is always associated with violence and alcohol in my country. When nz loses the whole country goes into mourning. People can and do live and die for the sport. With massive head injuries. So there is a dark side to sport it's not all fun and games.

Oh to be innocent and play 'just for fun' Not anymore. It's become a cash cow. Doctors who specialise in injuries can make a mint from sports..

Back to my sister. I think what keeps her going is the 'runners high' that she gets from it. Endorphins. It's good to keep fit I suppose. But it can be taken too far. She really sacrifices time and money and relationships for it, and somehow expects me to understand how gravely important it all is.

you most likely know that when anyone understands a sport they are watching, then you appreciate it more. i attended many red sox & yankee games. baseball is my favorite sport. we would sit very close, between home plate & 1st base. what a joy is it to watch the world's best baseball players perform well, especially on a beautiful sunny day. 1 of our rituals was, take the Amtrak train to penn station, taxi to tavern on the green for breakfast & board the D train to yankee stadium. for the red sox we also had seats between 1st base & home plate because my uncle was a member of the world war 2 club.

don't have baseball in nz, but we have cricket. Often that goes on for days even nights, but yes it's exciting when they hit the sixes. But often it's boring if they are just doing what they call dot balls. I have never been to a live game, just don't know anyone who would even take me. I'd probably take a book to read, if I found the game boring.

It would be fun to be in the middle of a mexican wave maybe, But then you can do that at a concert as well. Some men just don't appreciate the arts and find theatre, ballet or opera boring too, because they don't understand it.

Just wonder why you on the singles forum, when you have a wife? I can't relate to couples rituals. It would be a fun thing to go with friends, not necessarily as a couple.
