Lincoln proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens," to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November. Under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the date was changed to the fourth Thursday in November, an innovation that endures to this day.

Ah I found the answer!! :D

The pilgrims who established Thanksgiving were very religious and their ministers always gave a religious talk on Thursday afternoons, so afterwards would have been a good time to have a dinner celebration with the indians.
