Someone once asked why do we feel "blue" when we are down... So I have pondered this. We may feel blue but we are no more blue than we actually are yellow or green or red. Did you know most ancient cultures did not even have a word for blue? Did you know that blue and green have often been identified as the same color?
Black and white were always the first colors (shades: dark and light) to be recognized in language. The first true color following that was red. After that yellow or green.
This same someone asked me what color does a smurf feel when he is down... So I pondered this as well. Perhaps a sad smurf feels yellow. Yellow and blue are opposed to one another in how the visual cortex receive signals in the rods. It is impossible to see blue and yellow simultaneously. There are two types of opponent neurons that reside in the brain's visual cortex: red-green opponent neurons and blue-yellow opponent neurons.
These brain cells are called opponent neurons because they function in a binary way: the red-green opponent neuron can either signal red or green, but not both. And the blue-yellow opponent neuron can signal either blue or yellow, but not both.
When you look at a pure yellowimage, the yellow portion of the blue-yellow opponent neuron is excited and the blue portion is inhibited. Switch to a pure blue image and the blue portion of the opponent neuron is excited and the yellow is inhibited. Now imagine trying to see an image that is equally blue and yellowat the exact same time. The opponent neurons can't be both excited and inhibited simultaneously.
That, my friend, is why blue-yellow is an impossible color.
Don’t take my word for it, let a smurf verify this, but I am sure it is not easy being blue. Or yellow. And it’s impossible to be both blue and yellow at the same time.
