Denominations are just labels for a set of beliefs. The concept is not wrong. There have always been and always will be differences in peoples understanding of the bible. If you can find a simple and quick way to state which sets of beliefs fit your own, such as Baptist, then that is actually a helpful concept.
The issue with denominations is not their existence, but rather that people, humans, take a thing and make the thing more important than it ought to be. If people would simply accept it as an easy way to label what they believe rather than make their label more important than anothers, then the issue of denomination would be minimal.
The real problem is people and pride.

I agree with the "quick state" comment--but does that truly some up how one feels about their walk? My reply to others is just " I follow the Bible, and I believe Christ." To me, it makes them automatically not group me into any denomination that may have a bad impression on them. It makes them think, ---Oh, a follower of Christ?, huh, can't really argue that belief system at the moment.

These are labels given by man. Some even have the mans name in the denomination title.

Yes, the problem is pride, and as you well know, denominations basically have a we are right and others are "sort of right" and are 'getting there' type attitude.

This ultimately causes division amongst believers, as seen around here. Not bashing, just truth.

I am thankful for this post. I have been ill these past few days and needed to rest and read. This was point-on. I guess I've always known, somehow, that claiming a denomination was not for me. But now, that I've been educated in the like, I can honestly say it makes much more sense to me now. There is a deep division that catastrophically happens when we denominate ourselves in Christ. To look at all followers of Christ as one person, I believe, is to see what Christ taught. We are all created by His love and should honor that, no matter the division that has been created in the world.
Love this. :-)
