The ceasing of sacrifices and oblations was accomplished by Jesus at the cross. He died once for sin. After that, sacrifices were no longer necessary.

You can respect someone's service and also not respect an individual's character. If the one should be lauded, then the other should also be criticized. He served his country. He wasn't a nice guy. Both are true.
