Water baptism is a SYMBOL of this. Just like communion is a SYMBOL of the death of christ, and us partaking of that death. It is not the literal baptism which saves us. A good way to look at it is it is a symbol of what God did to us when we were saved. By calling out to him in Faith.

I got baptized a year later 40 some years ago. I know my church has big baptism events 2 times a year.. they make it a ceremony as the people give their testimonies. and I have seen people come to Christ in these events. I really do not see a problem.
