Why you think Jesus asked the women this question if he already knew?

John 4: 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”

17 “I have no husband,” she replied.
Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband.

18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”

Jesus' words from John 7:37-38 and John 4:14

It was a test and a proof. He tested her honesty and he proved to her he was Omniscient God having met her just then at the well and having information only she knew and had lived.

I understand that Magenta but I guess what I'm getting at is looking at a situation or interaction from the perspective of knowing all things before they happen, and knowing everything about a person without having to wait until they tell you.

It's mind blowing how having such an ability to know everything about a person would impact how you would approach having any conversation with people you meet.

Asking them questions you already know what their answers will be turns into a steering exercise to get them to act in ways you would already know that they will eventually come to act.

In essence the whole interaction becomes a steering exercise being played out to achieve the objective you already know will be achieved.

It has to be a special type of person to be able to cope with living that type of ground hog day existence every single day.

A normal person im sure would become mentally unwell in a short period of time.

I really can appreciate and understand that answer MF, and until recently would have given the same answer.

I however don't now think it's a simple matter of this woman being requested to ' go call her husband' is just for test purposes.

If we believe that Jesus knows all and everything, then wouldn't he already know the woman's marital status from the beginning, and already know that she would give him a truthful answer?

Yes. That's why he chose her to be the herald of his coming to the people in her village.

Nothing Jesus said or did was without purpose.

I think He was just steering the conversation.
Kind of like a parent asking a child, "What did you just do?" The parent already knows, but wants the child to consider what he just did.

Or a bit like winding up a toy car for it to go in a certain direction?

This alone is amazing, fro her to hear and see, and drink, hoping she did. The amazing part I see is:

So then; I think it reasonable to posit that Jesus' dialogue with that woman
was micro-managed by a higher power. In other words: his meeting with
that woman wasn't happenstance, viz: Jesus was directed to her.

Hi Gideon; Can you explain or speculate the purpose of going through such motions when Jesus would already know the answers to, and all outcomes ?

Hi WH; that is the most brilliant and speculative answer I never expected to receive!

It raises other questions about God and Jesus, but none the less, it a wonderful reply..

Everything he did was so people would believe in him . If someone already knows what you’ve done , it’s a lot easier to believe what they are saying elsewise to recognize them as a prophet

She recognized he was speaking of God because he already knew

All the miracles and supernatural stuff he did was absolutely for a purpose

“but these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.”

The miracles the power the truth unmitigated and unhidden the way he dealt with sinners and the way he dealt with the self righteous his teachings ect all of it is there to convince us that Jesus is who he claimed to be just as this would have impacted any of us if a stranger showed up telling us a bunch of intimate details he couldn’t naturally know . This is going to intruige and convince of the persons legitimacy

God hates lying - lying is Satan's nature. People will expose their true hearts by what they say. If the answer was honest and real, Jesus could help that individual. If not, that person would not receive help.

Jesus also came to earth to be man, not God. Jesus did not know all the answers. For example, He did not know, in His humanity, when He would return. (Matthew 24:6). Where that line is drawn, I do not know. I do know that Jesus prayed long, loud and often. God gave Jesus the wisdom that He needed to preach the kingdom of God, and to save, heal and deliver the lost.
