1 John 5

Easy-to-Read Version

God’s Children Win Against the World
5 The people who believe that Jesus is the Messiah are God’s children. Anyone who loves the Father also loves the Father’s children. 2 How do we know that we love God’s children? We know because we love God and we obey his commands. 3 Loving God means obeying his commands. And God’s commands are not too hard for us, 4 because everyone who is a child of God has the power to win against the world. 5 It is our faith that has won the victory against the world. So who wins against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.
God Told Us About His Son
6 Jesus Christ is the one who came. He came with water and with blood.[a] He did not come by water only. No, Jesus came by both water and blood. And the Spirit tells us that this is true. The Spirit is the truth. 7 So there are three witnesses that tell us about Jesus: 8 the Spirit, the water, and the blood. These three witnesses agree.
9 We believe people when they say something is true. But what God says is more important. And this is what God told us: He told us the truth about his own Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has the truth that God told us. But people who do not believe God make God a liar, because they do not believe what God told us about his Son. 11 This is what God told us: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life, but whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
We Have Eternal Life Now
13 I write this letter to you who believe in the Son of God. I write so that you will know that you have eternal life now. 14 We can come to God with no doubts. This means that when we ask God for things (and those things agree with what God wants for us), God cares about what we say. 15 He listens to us every time we ask him. So we know that he gives us whatever we ask from him.
16 Suppose you see your fellow believer sinning (sin that does not lead to eternal death). You should pray for them. Then God will give them life. I am talking about people whose sin does not lead to eternal death. There is sin that leads to death. I don’t mean that you should pray about that kind of sin. 17 Doing wrong is always sin. But there is sin that does not lead to eternal death.
18 We know that those who have been made God’s children do not continue to sin. The Son of God keeps them safe. The Evil One cannot hurt them. 19 We know that we belong to God, but the Evil One controls the whole world. 20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding. So now we can know the one who is true, and we live in that true God. We are in his Son, Jesus Christ. He is the true God, and he is eternal life. 21 So, dear children, keep yourselves away from false gods.
Footnotes
  1. 1 John 5:6 water, blood Probably meaning the water of Jesus’ baptism and the blood he shed on the cross.
  2. 1 John 5:18 The Son … safe Literally, “The one who was born from God keeps him safe” or “… keeps himself safe.”
I'm too tired to continue. I am guessing these are his proof texts.
Isn't it amazing how some people just grab onto an idea and no matter what proof you give them they just can not and will not let go of it? Reminds me of some Biden supporters? Ok, that was a cheap shot :)

Funny a week ago, Biden came to my home to visit me. I have lots of influnce over thousands of people in my area. He wanted me to endorse him. We discussed issues like Abortion and his plans when re-elected. We parted on friendly terms. He said, to call him when I have ideas. I told him an idea of putting drones in Schools and Colleges armed with knock out drats. And, how to trap a shooter between the double set of doors as one enters a building. Encase the area with bullet proof materials, arms detector that locks the doors and notifies the Police.
Also, a message goes over the speakers for lock down. The drones are released. Some Teachers are armed too. He did not like armed Teachers but like the other ideas.

The leaven of grains is prohibited for the Passover. It is not the same fermentation that Bible approves of for grape wine.
So, is there a different "level of fermentation" for the following, and what exactly
is "strong drink" (different from wine?) referring to?:

"Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever
is deceived thereby is not wise. " (Proverbs 20:1)
Seems like a very strong case of "new" wine being non-fermented and the
fermented wine being the "mocker"?

Also, if I had never "taken that [being deceived?] first drink," I would
not have fallen into the disease(?) of alcoholism, eh?

Amen.

We were talking about what is allowed for the Passover.
Wine is fine. I know. We had it served for the Passover Seder when I was still living as a Jew.

You are now discussing the abuse of alcohol beverage which is another subject.

It is the nature of discussion to broaden. A consideration of a topic naturally provokes other related thoughts. For a people of grace, Christians are woefully lacking in it. Perhaps some will learn from your humility.

Just for your information...

I used to work for a Christian German chef who's brother ran a winery.
He told me that grapes can even begin fermenting while yet on the vine.

In warmer climates it would be very common for the grapes to be in its beginning stage of fermentation as the grapes are being crushed.

Medically, alcoholic red wine, when drank in moderation has been shown to have health benefits for the heart.

On the night of the Passover Seder? As a teen age boy I was expected to drink several glasses of (rabbi certified) red wine
as a part of the ritual.

To the ancient Jews red wine was seen as innocuous as a glass of Coca Cola is today.

One of the big obstacles I had with my Jewish father was his disdain for the legalism of Baptists in regards to alcoholic beverages. Thankfully, my pastor was no a legalist, and my father would enjoy listening to his recorded messages being taught from the Hebrew and Greek texts.

The Bible CONDEMNS getting drunk. Not simply enjoying a drink. That is where legalism become cruel, harsh, and dark.

hope that helps.... grace and peace.

Find out for yourself. If you find I am not gentle with others, please point it out to me
You may be the number one most gracious person here...

And it would be difficult indeed to think of another contender for the #1 spot...

Perhaps @tourist ... though he does not engage in the hot button topics so much, surely not nearly as much as you do.

I'm assuming that Passover was celebrated in the Spring of the year in Jesus' time, like it is now?

In that case, the wine that Jesus drank at the Last Supper could not have been too awfully "new", because grapes are harvested in late Summer.

By my estimation, the "fruit of the vine" served at Passover would have had to be at least 6 months old, bare minimum. I don't see 1st Century grape juice making it that long unless it was fermented.

God has been very gracious to all of us .:D.

But as you said, For a people of grace, Christians are woefully lacking in it.

Would that we could all follow your example...
