Hey Everyone!

We're back in business! :)

In Mingle Threads #3 and #4, we came up with a whole bunch of ideas of what to trade @Talljake for his Granny's baked goods... Which inevitably led to this conversation:

Seoul I'd make an exception for you (when it comes to trading for Granny's baked goods.) But you'd have to present your favorite dish that isn't spicy,seafood,or meatloaf.
Do we have another memeber to welcome to the meatloaf haters club ?!?!?!
Now it's a not-so-well guarded secret that meatloaf has long been one of THE most divisive topics here in the Singles Forum!!

In fact, one of our long-time regulars has apparently been irreversibly scarred by the on-going feud:

Golly, we’re back to the ancient CC single forum style of hating on meatloaf? 😂
Unfortunately, it appears our happy little meatloaf-hating band has sadly been infiltrated, and if something isn't done soon, it looks like meatloaf is going to be on the menu for a long, long time:

Too late! The Department of Meatlo(a)ves has already been alerted and the meatloaf haters are being presented with all meatloaf recipes for the rest of the week.
And everyone knows how I feel about that!

You know the saying, "Hate the sin, love the sinner"?

Well in this thread, we love the meatloafer, but just hate the meatloaf. :)

All preferences aside, “meatloaf” just sounds wrong.

Perhaps if it were given a more appetizing name, it would have fewer haters.

And, sorry, “protein bar” is taken, though that is equally wrong.

In Alabama, one of the poorest states in America, meatloaf was cheap and, to some extent, an affordable and somewhat acceptable meal.

Down home the elderly didn’t go easy on folks who held grudges against meatloaf.😎

Those people who went to these extremes to mock good old meatloaf should be sent back to the dustbowl to make amends.
On one hand there are almost as many different meatloaf recipes as there are different kinds of Baptist churches. Saying you hate meatloaf is like saying you hate drinking anything except water. There are so many different kinds out there, you can't know you hate them all just by trying one.

On the other hand seoulsearch has gone on record as claiming to have tried many different recipes. I will accept it as a fact that she genuinely does not like meatloaf.

On the third hand she has campaigned so vigorously and for so long in opposition to meatloaf that this easily counts as persecution. :mad::cautious:

We actually had a whole conversation about this once in our meetup chat group.

For me, the older I get, the less I like meat, and I like it even less in large chunks. I don't know why -- it's a textural issue for me. I find big pieces of meat to be chewy, cord-y (like when you get a bad piece of gristle or tendon,) rubbery, and/or grainy and it makes me a little queasy.

I'm stuck in a Catch 22 (story of my life) because I'm supposed to subsist on mostly protein and low carbs, but the only meat I really like anymore are good old cheeseburgers and deli meat (which is not only supposed to about the most unhealthy kind of meat there is, but it's also way past my price range, at least here in the US.)

So I'm sure people would ask, "Why would you like burgers and not meatloaf?"

I think the thing with burgers is that they're pretty straightforward. Ground beef, shaped into patties with some seasonings, and if I'm lucky enough, thrown onto a charcoal grill, then cooked to perfection.

Meatloaf is not only an unsightly lump, but it's also kind of a who's who, grab-everything-leftover-and-throw-it-right in kind of dish.

Ground beef, pork, sausage, pigeons, and squirrels (with or without tails)? Sure, why not, after all, it's meat, and we need a base!

Then come the fillers... crackers, panko, bread crumbs, oatmeal? Well bless your heart, we need something to hold it all together, all of the above toss them right on in!

Last but not least (and probably the most questionablepart of all,) here come the condiments and sauces: Worcestershire, ketchup, onion soup mix, tomato paste and vinegar...

Look here Ma, you forgot to throw in the kitchen sink, so let's just whirl that in, too! Doesn't it sound utterly delightful?

Maybe this is the reason I've learned to question meatloaf. I have no doubt it can be made good by a number of talented home cooks, especially as a penny-pinching family filler-upper that cleans out the fridge at the same time, but as far as I'm concerned...

Meatloaf is a bit like catfish... A bottom feeder dinner entree where anything and everything can be mixed in and justified, and you never know really know what kind of hodge podge your poor fork is actually touching. o_O

Meatloaf that Haters Can Love

Ingredients:

Saute 1 medium onion, minced, in butter

1 large bowl mix 1/2 cup Pepperidge farm stuffing, and

1/2 cup beef bouillon. Add onion, 1 pound ground beef,

4 sprigs parsley or 1-2 tsps dried parsley,

3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese,

1 slightly beaten egg,

1 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper.



Blend. Form into loaf in greased baking pan.

Bake 45 minutes at 375 degrees, sprinkle with Oregono, then bake an additional 20 minutes until done.

I’m gonna agree that meatloaf might be made up of some dubious ingredients, but, that’s on the person who’s making it.

Meatloaf expertise won’t allow such stuff to happen. Only, and I’ll repeat, only haggard old worn down meatloaf cooks will ever be the ones adding distasteful ingredients to the holy meal known as meatloaf.

Having that said I’m more into bbq than meatloaf myself, but old traditions will prevail.😁

Hmmm, I guess it depends then on who made said loaf...

Anyways, I remember going through a time shortly after the new millennium when I could not eat beef. People would say, oh, don't you like it? And I would answer, no, it's not that, but that beef does not like me! Ugh, the pain it would cause me! So I had to avoid anything that had just beef meat in it, like hamburgers - off the menu. But then I discovered that if I ate beef mixed with other meats, like in a meatloaf made with lamb and pork, I could stomach it (literally, and no pun intended). I used to buy a really nice store-made meat loaf like that and take it to my daughter's for dinner while her dad and grand dad were still alive. I am not sure what happened, but after eating other meats mixed with beef, it became safe for me to eat just beef again, and I have meatloaf to thank for that knowledge. LOL.

Not that I eat much beef. I prefer poultry .:D

I didn't even know chicken loaf existed. lol I guess it would introduce some interesting spicing opportunities and probably some gravies. I'd try it.

I've had some great meatloaf, and I've had some unappetizing meatloaf. I made some good meatloaf with barley in it. People were puzzled, but they liked it.
