The Lord’s message came to me: 2 “Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy, and say to them—to the shepherds: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Woe to the shepherds of Israel who have been feeding themselves! Should not shepherds feed the flock? 3 You eat the fat, you clothe yourselves with the wool, you slaughter the choice animals, but you do not feed the sheep! 4 You have not strengthened the weak, healed the sick, bandaged the injured, brought back the strays, or sought the lost, but with force and harshness you have ruled over them. 5 They were scattered because they had no shepherd, and they became food for every wild beast. 6 My sheep wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. My sheep were scattered over the entire face of the earth with no one looking or searching for them. Ezekiel 34:1-6

Not much has changed since Ezekiel's day. Here I present to you, the Top 6 Ways Pastors Keep Their Sheep At Bay:

1. They use lots of Gatekeepers

The principle gatekeeper is the church office secretary. Her primary job is to screen calls and be on the front lines to thwart those who might just barge in on an important meeting. I've witnessed some churches using bullet-proof glass walls just past the entrance to better serve this purpose.

The next line of defense is the church elder. Armed with their e-mail addresses and cell phone numbers, they're ready to stave off any advances toward one of the many pastors. Their job is to further screen the individual and set up a sort of "triage" unit.

If a lowly parishioner actually makes it past an elder, then an "associate pastor" is employed to "give counsel." The Senior/CEO pastor is never bothered with the trivial matters such as a member's cancer or divorce. These matters are left to his servant, God.

2. They employ the dreaded "contact form"

The best way to get blown off by the church is to fill out the contact form on their web site. Unfortunately, every church has one now. The biggest problem with it is the user does not really know who's going to be reading the comments section. A cry for help may not be private, so the user may give up on the idea. And this is exactly what the paid church staff is hoping for.

3. They use alter call, instead of their sacred office

We don't really use the term "alter call" anymore. That would imply a form of discipleship, and we just don't have the time for that. No, instead we say, "Come to the front if you need prayer." And so someone from the prayer team-- yet another form of gatekeeper-- will be glad to say a 90- second prayer for you and send you on your way.

4. They preach and dash

You won't see any employee at Walmart moving as fast as a pastor dashing out the door after a sermon. "Elvis has left the building." And so has the preacher!

5. They take "prayer requests"

If you are struggling with your marriage or having trouble walking with God, just fill out this nice form. Drop it in the collection plate during the offering. One of the "prayer warriors" (people whom you've never met in your life) will be sure and pray for you. They'll never follow up with you to see if the prayers were answered, but it will hopefully make you feel better until next week.

6. They employ the small group, but not too much

These can also be called life groups or community groups. More and more churches are employing this strategy, because they know that their members are no longer being discipled by the pastor. The idea here is to have small groups you identify with and "do life together." This is not the pastor's favorite strategy. After all, it does take some of his authority and places it in the hands of others who may not have PhD's in Theology.

The question that more and more people are asking is, why not do this in the first place? Why have big buildings housing staff members who don't care about the individual? Why have paid pastors who only care about acquiring the next book deal? Why are we still doing this? That is a very good question indeed...

Not much has changed since Ezekiel's day.
This is true in the vast majority of churches in the West (possibly everywhere). God lists the sins of the shepherds in Ezekiel 34, but one rarely (if ever) sees this message presented to the pastors themselves. So what do we have in Ezekiel (which is primarily addressed to the shepherds of Israel, but also has universal application)?

IT IS GOD WHO IS DIRECTLY ADDRESSING THE SHEPHERDS
1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 2 Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto the shepherds;

THERE WILL BE SEVERE JUDGMENT (WOE) FOR NEGLIGENT SHEPHERDS
Woe be to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves! should not the shepherds feed the flocks?

THE NEGLIGENT SHEPHERDS ARE ALSO THE SELF-CENTERED SHEPHERDS
3 Ye eat the fat, and ye clothe you with the wool, ye kill them that are fed: but ye feed not the flock.

SIN # 1 -- FAILURE TO ATTEND TO THE *DISEASED* AND THE *WEAK*
4 The diseased have ye not strengthened...

SIN #2 -- FAILURE TO *HEAL* THOSE THAT WERE *SICK*
...neither have ye healed that which was sick...

SIN #3 -- FAILURE TO *BIND* UP THOSE THAT WERE *BROKEN*
...neither have ye bound up that which was broken...

SIN #4 -- FAILURE TO BRING BACK THOSE WHICH WERE DRIVEN AWAY
...neither have ye brought again that which was driven away...

SIN #5 -- FAILURE TO DILIGENTLY SEEK OUT THOSE THAT WERE LOST
neither have ye sought that which was lost;

SIN #6 -- THE USE OF CRUELTY AND FORCE TO CONTROL THE FLOCK
...but with force and with cruelty have ye ruled them...

SIN #7 -- CAUSING THE SCATTERING OF THE SHEEP THROUGH NEGLECT
...5 And they were scattered, because there is no shepherd...

SIN #8 -- CAUSING THE DESTRUCTION OF THE SHEEP BY WOLVES
...and they became meat to all the beasts of the field, when they were scattered...

SIN #9 -- CAUSING THE WANDERING OF SHEEP IN THE WILDERNESS
...6 My sheep wandered through all the mountains, and upon every high hill...

SIN #10 -- CAUSING THE SCATTERING OF THE SHEEP FAR AND WIDE
yea, my flock was scattered upon all the face of the earth, and none did search or seek after them.

SEVERE JUDGMENT TO COME UPON NEGLIGENT SHEPHERDS
7 Therefore, ye shepherds, hear the word of the LORD;
8 As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely because my flock became a prey, and my flock became meat to every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, neither did my shepherds search for my flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flock;
9 Therefore, O ye shepherds, hear the word of the LORD;
10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against the shepherds; and I will require my flock at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the flock; neither shall the shepherds feed themselves any more; for I will deliver my flock from their mouth, that they may not be meat for them.

GOD AND CHRIST THEMSELVES WILL BE THE SHEPHERDS
11 For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out.

Thank you for such a professional commentary on this passage of scripture. It is very enlightening, But I must tell you I'm heart broken. I don't want it to be this way. I want for our church leaders to go back to shepherding the individual. I want to be discipled by my pastor, not a $19 book he's written.

But I know it's not very realistic in today's church. There are too many competing interests involved. I think fortunately the church is changing back into the way it was in the first century. That is, what Jesus had envisioned-- a church outside the four walls. Let's hope this movement toward a service-oriented church continues.

You are right and your original post is both true, sad and funny at the same time, very well written.

My "Church" is a small gathering of about 50 people. Today the mainstream Churches are in free fall when it comes to tolerance for sin and worldliness and they are being transformed ... not to the image of Christ but to the image of the world, babylon. My suggestion if you wish to find true fellowship is to find small fellowships of born again believers.

There is a difference between Christianity and Churchianity

I chuckled reading this. It’s pretty spot on with a lot of churches, especially the larger mega churches.

I'm guessing the OP is speaking of Mega Churches or very large Congregations?

The majority of congregations in the US aren't large enough to have all the stuff the OP is addressing.

Even so, the things mentioned [in and of themselves] aren't bad. The implementation may be bad though.

BTW, Elders and/or Deacons are leaders of a congregation and SHOULD be doing a lot of what was mentioned.

baloney is not meat

believe it or not, the Lord directed me to this passage you have begun your op with when I was 20...a whole bunch of years back in time now

I hardly knew what to do with it...but I knew it was God prompting me

how very true it has all turned out to be

I am in a small fellowship that has the castaways from all the Churches that turned worldly.

There is one guy in particular who you can still hear his sermons from the 1980s when he warned about prosperity gospel and rock 'n' roll churches. But 2019 and he is involved in the same thing now. Sold out the truth. Many people left the Church since and joined the fellowship we have.

Welcome to CC, DesertWanderer…
Your list seems to be founded on the idea that only the on-staff pastor is capable of ministering to people's needs. That is a misunderstanding of both the pastoral role and the body of Christ. Nobody is capable of meeting all the pastoral needs of more than about 30 people along with regular preaching/teaching and dealing with the usual silliness that "church" entails. Even Jesus only had 12 close disciples.

By the way, the word is "altar". :)

Marshall County Alabama has about 160 churches. So, for the OP.... how many of the Pastors of those do you personally know? Yet you do not hesitate to judge them?

can you read without a personal agenda?

you sound personally offended

if millions of believers are condemned (which the op has not at all even hinted at) then that would be their own fault

what is being done, is actually YOU creating a red herring and going down a deep rabbit hole

go ahead and disagree if you want, but you are making false charges against the op

people have to answer for their own sin. no human being can condemn anyone to hell....so why state he is doing that

the very state of this country should be enough to convince anyone that something is off with Christianity ... a Christianity that states Jesus is the answer

And, I dare say that is why the smaller churches/congregations do not fit the profile laid out in the OP.
you know, I looked and I cannot find anywhere that every church in the world is apostate in what the op has stated

the state of way too many churches is indefensible and that goes for plenty of small ones too..,.but no one said all of anything so maybe chill

you don't like the op. duly noted

churchianity saves no one

when people grumble and complain about receiving correction, you know it's off

I have said it before, but Christianity these days reminds me of the book of Judges...everyone doing what is right in their own eyes

half the NT was written to correct error but oh my oh my...don't dare 'insult' all the perfect people who just want heaven and don't bother them on the way there

I would add, it is virtually impossible to have biblical church discipline in a mega church.

I'd say ur in the rabbit hole. Reading the OP and next comment, it's clear the intent of this Thread.

Your bias over my comment duly noted. I stand by mine. It always comes down to folks broad brush condemning folks.... The OP and others comments broad brush a whole lot of Pastors and congregations...

U don't like me? Duly noted. I will state what I believe.... any reasonable readings will show the negative slant by the OP and others.

None of this happens in my church. If it does in yours, it's time to vote the pastor out. I attended a church once where we had a great pastor and he felt called elsewhere, he had been there for years. They had a pastor and his family come in to preach for the call. I stood back and observed how he reacted to the people, they were a very friendly church. I noticed he stood apart from his wife, and never looked anyone in the eye that spoke to him. My parents were attending the same church and I told my mother how I felt. When it came time to vote for this man, the whole congregation voted for him, except two. Myself and my mother. That man ended up costing the church thousands of dollars in an unneeded project, divorced his wife and left the church in horrible debt. Discernment. Not a lot of people have it, and many who do, ignore it. I left the church before the pastor destroyed it. I wasn't willing to put up with his antics. But when a pastor carries on this way, vote him out. If that's not possible, leave and find the right church.
