I’m talking about men in general. Not men exclusively in church.
I’m sorry you felt the need to dislike my post, didn’t mean to offend you.

I am reading this topic with being a Christian and righteous, in mind. Not all men, not all women. A virtuous woman. A righteous man. How are they to present themselves?

Now if you’re saying men in the world and their nakedness (shirtless) are a temptation to you, and you wish they’d cover up, and be more modest, I have no qualms.

I am thinking in terms of believers and what we as the Body of Christ perceive to be modest.

Ghoti,

I will definitely be looking forward to more of your posts.

I am greatly interested in the work you and your wife have done, and am looking forward to learning more about your experiences.

This post embodies a good portion of my own frustrations with Christian "limitations." I was raised in a very proper Christian church where it felt like any topic beyond praise, worship, and study of the Word was forbidden or restricted. Certain things were not to be talked about and even if they were, everything had to be in Christianese, which, as you illustrated, is not always effective.

Growing up, my whole train of thought was, "But isn't this WHY we try to improve ourselves as Christians in the first place? To get people saved, and then to help them through everyday, real-life problems? But how can we help them if we can't TALK about anything???!!!"

I hope you will continue to share the things you have seen and learned over the years in your career.

God bless!
To start with, it was never a "career." I only worked on a volunteer basis with a local Psychologist, facilitating Behavioral Modification classes. I got into it because he had worked with me on some anger issues I had in a pretty bad way in my 20's, and he felt I could reach some people he couldn't.

@seoulsearch I think this goes back to your astute point. Modesty in the form of apparel seems to be a woman issue way more so than for men. The only thing I can possibly think of is if a man is wearing an overthrow with no undershirt to show off his abs. Lol
I see Islamic men dressed in mesh see-through shirts but they will stone a woman if she does not wear her full-body bag :p

My eyes... why did I have to look up mesh shirts on men? 🤮 It looks so bad, lol.

I'm not sure if men realize how hard shopping can be when you're a woman, either. The fallout from stars like Kim Kardashian is that everything in the stores is cut to show and flaunt.

Most women can't afford tailor-made clothes, but that's about what it comes down to. I have been trying to find shorts to wear to the gym for ages, and check every store I go into. But it seems there are only two choices -- yoga pants, which are long, but super tight, and "shorts" that are short enough to pretty much moon the entire gym.
Yeah, I know what you're talking about. Not for me, but the ladies at church are always sharing tips with each other on where to find good modest attire. It's really hard to find these days.

Now, the part about being an ordinary girl (which I am) who thinks about the things others probably think about but are too afraid to ask -- I've written several threads here with varying themes that people found to be controversial, because I'm often questioning the cookie-cutter answers I was given in church. Because of that, many people have written me and said, "I've always wondered that too, I just never wanted to risk asking."
The problem with cookie-cutter answers is, they are usually right, but for the wrong reasons.

Lemme explain that: The answers themselves are usually technically accurate, and the matters the questions pertain to are usually very good things to have. But it's really easy to give out cookie-cutter answers instead of examining WHY we do this and don't do that. So people start rejecting good standards because the reasons given for following them basically amount to "that's what we have been told to do, so you'd better do it."

If church leaders will not (or can not!) give concrete answers for what church members are required to do or avoid, I'd start looking for church leaders who are better at explaining, or at least have a stronger penchant for thinking about the reasons we do what we do.

That's another bad thing about cookie-cutter answers... they don't hold up well under pressure. If the only answer you have for "why do you church people do that?" is "because we were told to" that's a real unstable footing.

I may be totally wrong, but knowing little mermaid like I do, she didnt mean because shirtless guys tempted her, she meant because its uncomfortable to see someone half dressed , woman or man.

Oh I thought you meant people in general. For the most part Christian men dress okay I guess.
No, lol, I am not tempted sexually at all. Praise God for that.
I just find men without a shirts very uncomfortable to be around. It's gross. Nobody needs to see a man's nipples. Just like women cover up theirs, men should too.
Do you see immodest women at church? Immodesty is out in the public but I've never really encountered it at my place of worship.
Sorry for the dislike, I'll take it off. It's just that you were annoying me a little.

The teacher part of me wants to emphasize following directions... “LADIES, What Kind of Hairstyles Do You Like on Men?”

It has been quite amusing and entertaining to read this thread. I think it’s a great representation of the communication issues people have in general. :D:D

It seems the derail has played itself out, so...

The topic is hairstyles on guys. Or lack of hair on guys. Or a whole LOT of hair on guys. Or something else maybe? Which do you prefer?

I think it's interesting that the women in this thread have posted/mentioned a variety of hairstyles they like on men, but in the men's thread, the answer is almost universal -- long hair is IT.

My only concern with long hair on a woman and men's attraction to it being seen as "Biblical" is, what happens if a woman can't have long hair?

I'm not sure if most men know this (simply because many haven't grown out their own hair), but hair will often grow only to a certain length, and then stop growing. Some people's hair won't grow any longer, no matter how long they leave it uncut or try to let it grow. I know I'm one of those people -- although my hair will grow to a fairly decent length, it won't grow much after that. Bu some some women, try as they might, can only grow their hair to say, chin length, etc.

I've also heard men say that it's ugly and unfeminine when women cut their hair short. But if you look around, the majority of older women have short hair -- there is a reason for that -- and it's often not because that's what they want.

Maybe the guys have noticed their hair thinning out as they get older? The same thing happens to women, and many women get to a point where cutting it is their only option. This is why many older women cut their hair and get perms -- thinning hair usually does not look so great when you try to grow it out, and so they cut it and perm it in order to try to make the most of what they do have.

Is a woman of God somehow unGodly if she cuts her hair short? If a man marries a woman with long hair and she eventually has to cut it short, should he leave her for a woman with long hair, because a man liking long hair on a woman is "Biblical?"

I heard a sermon preached once about I Corinthians 11:14-15 in which the pastor interpreted this passage as being more about following the roles God has set for men and women rather than it actually being about hair.

I've talked to several women who are experiencing hair loss and it makes them anxious and depressed, because the society and even church circles seem to put so much emphasis on a woman's hair. I am directly concerned with these issues because of a medical condition that causes hair loss. A few days ago I had my picture up as my avatar and a few people commented on it, which was very sweet.

But I always think to myself, "Would you feel the same way about me, or how I look, if I had short hair, or no hair at all?"

This is why I'd always hoped that the right guy for me would happen to meet me while my hair was short. I figured, if he liked me with short hair, he must really like me for me, and would still love me even if I had to permanently cut my hair short someday.

I have to confess, if a guy made a big deal about my hair being long, I would be uneasy, because I'd assume that once my hair was gone, his attraction to me would go right along with it.
The issues I see with some of what you're saying is that you are taking specific circumstances and making them more broad. Granted it's common for older women to cut their hair for various reasons, but at least in my experiences, thinning hair on women is much less common than your post makes it sound.

I've zero doubt some view long hair as biblical, but also in my experience that's rarely if ever been the reason men prefer long hair. So I don't see that as being a major factor, either.

Speaking for myself only, I do prefer long hair, as I stated. Mostly I agree, short hair tends to be less attractive and less feminine. But I also know (and I'm sure im not the only guy that feels this way) that a womans looks will change over time. She'll get old and wrinkly. Maybe heavier. And eventually need to cut her hair. But by then I'll be older as well, and changed how I view things. I'll have spent enough time with her to not be as concerned about such things.
Basically I'll have a different outlook. And things that were once important will be less important. And the woman will have become more important.
So even if a guy makes a fuss about your hair now, that doesn't mean he will always be the same person.

And the reality is this is true of the entire body. The man that marries the pretty, athletic aerobics instructor knows she won't look the same in twenty years. We all age and often not for the better. Both men and women. So enjoy what's available while you're younger and grow to appreciate what you have as you age. That's life. (=

I’m afraid to say sis, but you probably won’t last being where “The Rock” is from (Samoa) because almost half or majority of the men there walk around shirtless due to the weather 🤣
